Once upon a time, a middle-aged couple named Ken and Jillian Vickers rented a cozy cottage overlooking Lake Tahoe in hopes that a weekend away would revitalize their marriage. The plan worked so well that they bought the cottage. But it was far too small to accommodate their children and grandchildren, so on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, it sat empty.

Ken suggested renting it out for those holidays, which made financial sense to Jillian. But after several seasons, an unusual pattern emerged. Renters routinely left notes expressing their joy at either rekindling an old love or finding a new one during their stay at the cabin.

The consistent theme of the notes fascinated Ken and Jillian, both sociology professors at the University of Nevada in Reno. Perhaps the little cabin had a special effect on couples. If so, Ken and Jillian vowed to collect enough evidence to uncover its secret.…
What a fun setting for all three of the stories in this anthology. This is exactly the kind of light, magical, exciting Christmas reading I look forward to.

The Thanksgiving Fix by Vicki Lewis Thompson – 4.5 stars -

I really enjoyed this “finding love for the first time” story. It was funny, sweet, and very hot. Mac, with his easy going, laid back attitude, and Beth, a strong, independent woman, were awesome characters. Watching as they each started questioning their self imposed ban on committed relationships was funny and heartwarming! But could they compromise, with themselves and each other, to give love a chance? You'll have to read it for yourself and find out!

The Christmas Set-Up by Jill Shalvis – 4 stars

While reading this story I was reminded of this passage from Corinthians: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

This was a very sweet, very sexy “love was right in front of me all along” story. Funny, heartwarming, passionate… even as I’m sitting here writing this review I’m smiling. I wonder if this story is related to any others by this author? Anyone know?

The New Year's Deal by Julie Kenner – 3.5 stars
Five years ago, Cleo Daire and Josh Goodson said goodbye and went their separate ways. But first they made a promise to reunite. Now the ex-lovers are spending New Year's Eve in a romantic cabin, where passion takes them by surprise and long-wished-for dreams can sometimes come true.
I enjoyed this “second chance” romance, but had a hard time getting into it. I couldn’t understand how they could so easily say goodbye in the first place. But once they found themselves together, in a magical cabin during a magical time of year, they couldn’t deny what was still between them.

The bottom line – Holiday Hideout is a wonderful, romantic, sexy trio of stories to warm up the holidays, and to remind us that with a little hope, a little patience and a lot of faith, anything - even falling in love - is possible!

All three stories in this Christmas anthology were sweet and heartwarming, making it a great, light, holiday read. While I enjoyed all three stories, the first two were my favorites. All three stories take place in a cabin on Lake Tahoe.

Vicki Lewis Thompson's contribution to the anthology, The Thanksgiving Fix, brings Beth to the Lake Tahoe cabin to have a secluded holiday away from her matchmaking family. Handyman Mac is called to the cabin by the owners, and he is dreading a holiday fix up the next day at his mother's house. Beth and Mac hit it off and share their woes about famiies who want to marry them off. They agree that neither is looking for marriage, but when their attraction heats up quickly they both start to want more. This story was very sweet, with a fast moving steamy romance.

The Christmas Set-Up by Jill Shalvis has competitive architects Zoe and Jason vying for the same architectural contract and promotion with their company. Jason's little brother sets up a scenario to get Zoe and Jason alone at the Lake Tahoe cabin at Christmas. After a rocky beginning, Zoe and Jason have to decide what to do about their mutual attraction and accompanying feelings. Zoe and Jason were both great characters, and while this romance was very touching, it also had some humor.

The story by Julie Kenner, The New-Year's Deal, features Cleo and Josh, who were involved in a very serious relationship in college. Cleo broke up with Josh when his father died, making him unable to continue on to graduate school with Cleo. When they broke up, Josh talked Cleo into agreeing to meet with him in Lake Tahoe in five years to evaluate their past and see if they have room for one another in their lives. When they see one another at this five year reunion, they still have a strong physical attraction. Josh immediately realizes that he wants a life with Cleo, but she has doubts. Josh has to try to show Cleo that they belong together. I enjoyed this story, but I didn't like the way Cleo, who was supposed to be so in love, broke up with Josh in the beginning of the story when his father dies. She doesn't even consider a long distance relationship with him, and it bothered me that she broke up with him so easily, especially when he was going through a time filled with grief. I had a difficult time getting past this, and it kept me from feeling much empathy towards Cleo. I really liked Josh and enjoyed all but the break up in the beginning.

I really appreciated reading an anthology in which all of the stories were very enjoyable. I liked the storylines, characters, and steamy romances. I received this book as an ARC through Netgalley.

Holiday Hideout is a collection of three short stories that take place over Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. All three stories are connected in that they all take place in the same cabin, owned by Jillian and her husband who believe the cabin has magical powers to make people fall in love. To test the theory, they rent the cabin out to collect as many date points as they can to prove their theory. I loved that all the stories were linked like that!

My favorite story was definitely the first, "The Thanksgiving Fix." I think I liked it in part because not too many books take place during Thanksgiving, but mostly I liked it because it was a really good story. Beth books the cabin to be alone for Thanksgiving, wanting to avoid her family's "Why aren't you married yet?" questions. When Jillian sends the local handyman over to make sure the plumbing is working properly, they really hit it off. The story was both cute and sexy, a great balance.

I loved the first two stories and enjoyed the last one but not as much. My favourite was the first one which had great characters, the cabin described so cosy and welcoming (I wanted to be there), humour and romance.

I thought it was great idea to have all three sexy stories based at the same romantic cabin but at different times.

I really enjoyed the combined-three Christmas stories with different authors. My only regret was that they ended much too soon. The romances were all connected by their use of the same secluded cabin near Lake Tahoe. The cabin has mysterious effects on all the couples. The love scenes sizzle and you just enjoy being a fly on the wall taking in the entertainment. A fun read!

Good book. I liked the idea of a cabin where people fall in love. The stories were all enjoyable, they were just a little too short for me - not enough time for a really good character and story development.

A good set of cosy winter romances
4 stars

This anthology pulls together three festive stories that all focus around one particular cabin that's known to bring luck in love for all those who stay there. Perfect for warming up the cold winter evenings.

The Thanksgiving Fix by Vicki Lewis Thompson
Love is the last thing on Beth Davis' mind when she takes a Thanksgiving break at a friend's cabin to avoid being set up by her family. That's until Coinneach "Mac" McFarland comes to fix a suspicious leak in the cabin and she discovers the best things are found when you're not even looking.

This was a sweet story that worked even with the short time frame of the couple. I liked the setting that was built up in the story and as short stories goes I really enjoyed the story and the romance.

The Christmas Set-Up by Jill Shalvis
Competing architects Zoe and Jason have two weeks to come up with a design to win a coveted project in their architect firm. But when a snowstorm traps the pair in a remote cabin their real desires come to the fore. Will it be a merry Christmas for the pair?

I love a story of a couple that hide desire behind bickering and this one was great. It was funny, sweet and I very much enjoyed it. Would say that this was the best story of the three.

The New Year's Deal by Julie Kenner
Five years ago Cleo and Josh split up but promised to meet up again for New Year's Eve in a remote, romantic cabin. Their lives might have changed but the spark of desire is still there and they might just be able to make it work this time.

This was only so-so for me. I easily read it through but didn't really care for either Josh or Cleo. Josh was a little too spineless when standing up for what he wanted and Cleo seemed a little fickle and lacking emotion. It just didn't really do it for me, unfortunately.

Overall, this was a fairly enjoyable anthology. It wasn't overly festive or filled with holiday cheer but you did get the sense of a nice cosy cottage on a dark winter night and that was enough to make my reading experience an enjoyable one. 4 stars.

These were fine. Nothing truly jumped out at me. I liked the premise but overall this was just "meh". I may read this back when Christmas rolls around again because now I'm just not in the mood for Christmas stories so that's part of why I wasn't feeling this. 3 ⭐

The Thanksgiving Fix by Vicki Lewis Thompson
My rating for this story: A

My Review:
I really enjoyed this novella. The story is about two people, Beth and Mac, who connect on Thanksgiving Eve based upon the fact that they can commiserate that they are both so tired of people trying to fix them up. They are both very happy and fulfilled to be single and don't want any more fix-ups. What they don't realize (at first) is that their meeting is a fix-up...and it turns out to be a good one because they have unbelievable chemistry and truly have fun together.

This is one of those stories about how when you are not looking for love, then that is when it will strike. I enjoyed both Beth and Mac's characters. I really liked the twist of the fact that they both agree that they are not looking for a significant other, but then they start to change their minds as they get to know each other. Mac especially realizes that what they have is something special, but by then, they have already agreed in the no relationship rules.

I liked this one. The sexual tension was written incredibly well and it was simply a sweet little holiday story.

The Christmas Set-Up by Jill Shalvis
My rating for this story: A+

My Review:
This story was so fabulous. Both Zoe and Jason work in the same architecture firm and are up for the same promotion. For those that work with them, it's hard to pinpoint which is stronger...the competition between the two of them or the sexual tension that they are working hard to ignore. Jason's little brother also works at the firm and he schemes with a couple other associates to bring both Zoe and Jason together so that they might have a chance to work out that sexual tension via the Tahoe cabin. It works...big time.

I loved this story. Both Zoe & Jason have very viable, but very different reasons, for why they are pursuing the promotion so hard. Jason's parents died suddenly the week before Christmas when he was 20 yo and his little brother, Mike, was 15 yo. When Jason arrives at the cabin, he wrenches a nerve in his neck that he had injured the year before in a mtn. bicycling accident. Zoe arrives to yell at Jason about something that Mike actually did and finds him incapacitated with pain and things blossom from there.

Every single aspect of this story appealed to me. I loved the story line, the competitive nature of the two, and Jason's vulnerability...both from his injury and why he doesn't celebrate Christmas. Everything about this story touched my heart and I truly loved it. Just a fabulous little piece of writing.

The New Year's Deal by Julie Kenner
My rating for this story: B-

My Review:
This story didn't resonate with me as much as the other two simply because I couldn't understand the heroine's (Cleo) actions. I really liked Josh and could totally get behind him and his character, but Cleo, and her justification and reasons for doing things, just didn't make any sense to me. I wanted her to want Josh as much as he wanted her and I just wasn't getting that from her actions.

Again, this story featured that sweet little cabin and I really love that twist on this anthology. Such a fun premise for all three of these novellas.

I loved this book! Anthologies seem to be my favorite. The stories are always fulfilling because you read them fast and don't have to stop right in the middle of a story usually. This one was no different. Each story was well written and the characters were well thought. And i think the part i liked best was that all three stories were connected by the cabin where all three couples feel in love.

The first story, The Thanksgiving Fix was my favorite. Beth and Mac were such a great couple. Mac was strong and good looking and Beth was all business but she was also very warm and sweet. The same for the second story, The Christmas Set-Up. Jill Shalvis has been a favorite of mine for a while and she didn't disappoint with this story. She stuck to her normal style and gave us a great sexy story. The third story wasn't my favorite but it was still a good one. All three stories were believable, not just thrown together. All in all this is a great holiday read. I give this book 4 stars!

Ugg.... I was excited to read this a month before Christmas and boy was I disappointed! First of all, I must admit part of my displeasure was brought on by myself considering I'm not a huge fan of novellas, but hey I was in the spirit of Christmas!

My real reason for disliking the book is very simple. Yes, I love fiction, but when fiction takes that ridiculous turn... I mean come on... Two people aren't looking for anything more than hot sex and good friendship, that is tangible in such a short amount of time, but what the heck! Next thing you know they are thinking marriage?? You've known each other all of two seconds?? ...Stupid. I would have been happier with leaving it as a blossoming relationship, not I LOVE YOU!

This is the only puppy love that is cute...

Home Away From Home for the Holidays
In a cozy cottage overlooking Lake Tahoe, married sociology professors from University of Nevada rekindled the romance in their rocky marriage. It was such a tremendous experience for them that they bought the cottage and rented it out when they weren't using it. After several letters left by thankful renters, the professors noticed a trend.

Rocky relationships were smoothed, new relationships were kindled, and love was a rental agreement away for the lucky couples who spent time at their cabin.

The trend was so fascinatingly obvious the professors couldn't help but test out the wild theory that there was something truly magical about their cabin. So they decided to study the phenomena. And with three holidays fast approaching, there was no time like the present to see if three separate couples could find their forever love in a small cottage by a large lake.

The Thanksgiving Fix
by Vicki Lewis Thompson
~* 3 Stars *~

Beth Tierney has decided she's had enough of her family's matchmaking attempts. Taking control of her life, she's eschewing the family gathering for Thanksgiving and spending time alone at the Lake Tahoe cabin owned by her favorite professor from college. She is a self-sufficient woman who neither needs nor wants a man to fulfill her life and her holiday is going to be all about embracing her single status and focusing on her career.

Handyman Mac McFarland is dreading the trip to his parents house for the holiday. His mother has invited yet another young woman to parade in front of him in the hopes he will finally get married. He's so focused on the impending disaster that he doesn't question the oddness of the phone call he gets from his friend Jillian Vickers. She and her husband are professors at the state university but own a cabin on the lake, and she asks him to go over to the cabin and check on a pipe leak she's worried about.

Mac shows up at the cabin and meets the gorgeous Beth and suddenly all their best intentions are tossed out the window as sparks fly. The heat between them is instant and intense. Two people least interested in being a couple could take coupling to a level that will give them both an entirely new home for the holidays.

The Christmas Set-Up
by Jill Shalvis
~* 4 Stars *~

Architect Jason Monroe doesn't know the meaning of Christmas spirit. He's too busy keeping the family home out of the hands of the bank, running herd on his younger brother, and competing fiercely with brilliant architect Zoe Anders. The beautiful, brilliant Zoe who makes his pulse race as often as she annoys him.

When the senior architect at the firm challenges all the associates to come up with a dazzling design to land a whale of a client and offers a choice promotion as the prize, everyone in the room knows that Jason and Zoe are the two he's really speaking to. They are the best at the firm. Now they'll be pitted against each other far more directly than they ever have before.

As Christmas approaches, neither Jason nor Zoe are having much luck with their designs. Little did either of them know that a few helpful elves...Jason's brother being top mischief-maker...have conspired to push them together over the holiday break. Two brilliant architects stuck in one snow-bound cabin on Lake Tahoe for Christmas. By the end of their stay they'll either have killed each other, or realized that a little bit of collaboration...in all things...is even better than a visit from Ol' St. Nick.

The New Year's Deal
by Julie Kenner
~* 2 Stars *~

Five years ago their dreams and ambition sent college sweethearts Cleo Daire and Josh Goodson in two different directions, ending a relationship that had meant everything to both of them. But they made a deal. They would meet up five years from that dark day to catch up and see if there is still something between them.

Josh loved Cleo but his duty was to his family. Cleo hated seeing Josh subjugate his dreams but wouldn't try to stop him from following his heart, even as hers was broken.

Now it's five years later and Cleo's career is hitting a great stride. Josh's life is over a thousand miles away. She didn't even know if he would remember their promise. He had. It was almost all he thought about lately. Still, regardless of their chemistry or the feelings still swirling between them, the fact remains that she lives on one coast and he on another. And he's still falling in line with the bonds of obligation to his family business.

Still, could the magic of one special cabin strike gold once again? Is five years long enough for them to get another chance, or are they both too caught up in the lives they are living in the present to worry about what could have been in the past?

~*~

I don't read many anthologies. Too often I find the stories uneven and the overall expense not worth the hit-or-miss reading from story to story. Still, I was feeling festive this holiday season and decided to devote some reading time to four of the holiday anthologies that were available. So begins a short jaunt down a frosty lane bedecked with holly and fragrant boughs of pine, twinkling lights, hot chocolate, hot sex, and, of course, love.

The premise for this contemporary romance holiday anthology, the cabin-of-love in Tahoe, connects each of these three seasonal novellas and gives them a sense of cohesion that goes beyond the holiday theme. Authored by three widely popular writers, each story is well written. All three are creative craftsmen when it comes to building their plots and getting their characters together in the limited and limiting space allotted to them in their individual novellas.

For me, though, neither the sense of cohesion nor the quality writing was enough to fully entertain me over the span of the three stories. Jill Shalvis' novella, The Christmas Setup, was my personal favorite, though as she's one of my favorite authors for light romance, that's wasn't a huge surprise. Her novella was a little sweet, a little spicy, and had some humor that made me smile. The first and third books in the anthology didn't have the same amount of appeal, but not because they're poorly written - they're not. The problem I had with each was the literary tropes they featured.

The anthology spans three holidays and the novellas span three separate tropes. Thompson's The Thanksgiving Fix is a lust(love)-at-first-sight story that has the main characters having sex within hours of meeting each other and working out the logistics of happily ever after two days later. That's one of my least favorite tropes in romance fiction because it's so rarely written in a way that I can believe. Maybe I'm a cynic...no, I know I'm a cynic...but I have no faith in the permanence of the relationships in these cases. And color me prudish, but shagging someone you've just met is neither romantic to me nor particularly festive...it does, however, put the 'ho in the Ho-ho-ho.

Shalvis tackles the enemies-to-lovers trope in The Christmas Setup, and that was another element in its favor, because it's one of my favorites in the genre, right behind the friends-to-lovers trope. I wasn't totally thrilled with the conclusion to the story; I wish the job had gone the other way and I would've liked a more detailed picture of the resolution of Jason's financial issues, but I enjoyed this novella quite a lot.

The New Year's Deal features the second-chance romance. Kenner's novella was probably the most expansively developed plot, and I don't have a problem with second-chance romance per se, but I never warmed up to Cleo in this story. She seemed fairly selfish and unbending in the initial breakup between her and Josh and she never really improved for me as the story went along. Plus, second-chance romances don't work so well for me when I actually read the first chance going splat. I find it depressing, and depressing in a holiday novella doesn't exactly keep my chestnuts roasting on an open fire.

Unfortunately, this holiday anthology sort of exemplifies why I don't read many of them. Three great authors whose books I've read and enjoyed, three novellas surrounding three separate holidays, and three popular tropes for the genre, yet I couldn't quite engage with all three stories. Still, there's that whole festive thing, and I've got three more anthologies to go on my journey to a very Merry Christmas.

This book was pretty much what I expected for a Blaze Holiday anthology. Short, steamy stories.
The first (VLT's) was good, if a bit unbelievable. I don't really buy the "just met him yesterday, now I'm madly in love with him and want to marry him" story lines, but it was a good read anyway.
Jill Shalvis' story was my favorite. I like the fact that the couple had a history prior to the story at work, which made it more believable. My one complaint was that I would have liked a short epilogue to wrap it up.
Julie Kenner wrote a second chance at love story, and it was fairly good, although I didn't really think the whole conflict portion of the story was as big of a deal as the author was making it out to be.
Overall, a quick, fun read.

Three Stories set in a cabin with romantic magic?
The Thanksgiving Fix was a good story base but instant sex when you just meet = no so much.
The Christmas Set-Up was sweet and a good take on work, family and loss.
The New Year's Deal was a meet me later set-up and I would have loved more of a what happened with everything else that was going on in their lives.
Or maybe an overall epilogue for all the stories and more about the owners of the cabin.

Here I am again, reviewing an anthology--a confirmed don't-want-to-read-anymore-anthologies reader, but being drawn to one that features at least two of my favorite authors. What can I say? I thought it looked really good and so I got it, and when all is said and done, I'm glad I did.

A quiet, out-of-the-way mountain cabin in the Lake Tahoe region was the scene of a marriage reclaimed by Ken and Jillian Vickers. They rented it, of course, and their renewed marriage meant so much to them and was so identified with this particular place, that they ended up buying it and using it as a holiday retreat for years. As both of them were sociology professors at the University of Nevada, Reno, they began to realize that every couple that had rented the cabin over the years has either found a new love or had seen their relationship renewed. Unlike some who would have tried to prove that the property was "magic," these two set out to prove that the property was very ordinary. So our three couples were a part of a larger experiment.

One of the biggest complaints that I have had with anthologies is that the stories are usually so short that the stories seem incomplete or that the story itself my be good but the ending seems tacked on. I must confess that such didn't seem to be the case here. Certainly there was insufficient space for a long, drawn-out tale of one sort or another, but since the context for all three stories was the mountain cabin, the task of developing a backdrop and the space it usually absorbed was not necessary and more of the character development could take place. Each of the couples were brought to the cabin as a kind of "set-up" by Jillian and one or both of the individuals has known Jillian and her husband through their connection with UN Reno.

The Thanksgiving Fix was probably my favorite and which brought together two individuals who had decided that marriage was probably not for them and were confirming their belief that single living was best, with the understanding that such a choice did not exclude some good sex along the way. And good sex became their reality before too long. Both of these people were mature and had lived for quite some time with the pressures of a family who spent a great deal of time and energy finding potential mates for them. They had enough of that!! This is a delightful and charming tale that will warm the reader's heart, no matter what time of year it may be.

The Christmas Set-up brings together two architects, both of whom work for a very important architectural firm and both of whom are competing for an important promotion that will not only beef up their professional resume but will also bring in some much needed income. Through the manipulations of Jason's brother, Jason and Zoe find themselves snowed in on Christmas Eve, finally having to acknowledge their strong attraction and getting honest with each other. These are two high-powered people who are lonely, who really need to let some Christmas love and cheer into their lives, and who need the push and shove of a new relationship to help them re-order their personal priorities. And that is the message at the core of this story: what is really important in life.

The New Year's Deal involves a bit more back story in that Cleo and Josh are lovers who had been together and planned a life together since about their second week in college. Now it has been five years since they went their separate ways and it is time to see if they have each remembered their promise to meet at New Years in the old motel where they first became lovers. The old motel is burnt down so Josh moves the assignation to Jillian's cabin and sends an invitation to Cleo. He is CEO of his family's mining operation and she is an attorney with a firm that practices international law. There are a few more complications between this couple and true love has quite a ways to go before it can make its appearance between these two. But I think at the heart of this story is the need for the survival of one's dream--what every person needs to consider when making those important life decisions. And for Cleo and Josh, it is indeed the big question they must answer before their mutual destiny can become a reality.

All in all, this is a delightful holiday anthology, but the stories are larger than just their holiday context. Each brings some important life issues into the discussion these couples have, and each story touches on the reality of human loving and relationship that most of us have faced at one time or the other. Even though this anthology was released in November, 2011, it is timely in its own way no matter the time of the year.

I give it a rating of 4 out of 5

"Holiday Hideout" is a collection of three holiday-themed short stories penned by Vicki Lewis Thompson, Jill Shavis, and Julie Kenner respectively. It's the kind of heart warming read that bases itself in a bit of a vantage point scenario - three couples, three different holidays, one cabin and quite a bit of hooking up. The stories themselves are as warm as the steady fire that burns in the cabin, and I enjoyed what it had to offer.

The first story in the collection is "The Thanksgiving Fix" by Vicki Lewis Thompson. This showcases the relationship between Mac and Beth, hooked up by (of all things) a leaky faucet at the aforementioned cabin (courtesy of Mac's mother, who was more than willing to fix him up with someone!). I liked the progressive development of the characters and their chemistry in this story. It takes its time pacing in how the characters fall for each other, and while I think the pacing could've picked up a little more in places, it was a pleasant read.

Next came what ended up being my favorite story in the collection upon a second read - "The Christmas Set-up" by Jill Shavis. Zoe and Jason are coworkers at the same firm, and Zoe has always had a crush on Jason, but was never willing to admit it considering his headstrong attitude. Jason is equally attracted to her, but feels that he competes with her to get a valued promotion for reasons of his own. Mike, Jason's brother, decides to play a deviant scheme in order to hook the two up at a cabin. Events don't go quite as planned when Jason ends up hurting himself in a freak accident, and Zoe cares for him in his recovery, which leads to more intimate moments between them - and not just in the measure of sex. The two end up learning about each other, including a guarded secret about why Jason doesn't celebrate Christmas. I loved this story from beginning to end. It drew me in for the strong characterizations and chemistry. It was a very sweet read.

The last story was the weakest for me in the collection, but I still found something to like in it - "The New Year's Deal" by Julie Kenner. The story revolves around the relationship between Cleo and Josh, who separated five years before the story began (while they were in college) to pursue their respective dreams. The story spends time developing their relationship to the point where they reunite, but it was difficult to side with Cleo's rationale in points, even with the respective issues that both characters have that keep them apart. I think if it were a longer story, it probably would've come across a little better, but as a short story, it was constrained in the sense that it had to push itself to a conclusion in such a brief span, and that shortchanged, I think, the development of the two character and their relationship to where, with more time to develop, it would've felt more resonant. Still, I thought it was well-written.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this collection to those who like light, sweet, romantic reads within the theme of the holiday season.

Overall score: 3.5/5

Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher Harlequin.

Gotta love a book with a common theme.

Take on cabin in the woods, three couples, three fantastic holidays and what do you get? Three really nice love stories.

The Thanksgiving Fix by Vicki Lewis Thompson was a sweet story about a woman named Beth who just wants one holiday without her mother trying to fix her up with a man. She is ready to be all done with that and just enjoy being single. Enter handyman Mac who doesn't want another holiday stuck with his mother's matchmaking attempts. A leaky pipe and crazy weather bring them together, but the sparks between them bring them even closer.
This was a cute story and one that any single person can relate to. I love the slight humor and the insights into the minds of both the characters involved. It was a sweet story that keeps me being a Thompson fan.

The Christmas Set-up by Jill Shalvis was another sweet story, but with a more humorous set up. Take two competing architects, one meddling brother, and a romantic cabin the woods and you have a romantic comedy in the making. Zoe and Jason have two weeks to create a design and win a coveted new project and a promotion. But the sparks between them are too much to ignore when they are both duped into spending Christmas trapped in a secluded cabin together.
I loved the dynamic between Zoe and Jason. Both work hard at denying their feelings for each other and work hard to make themselves better than the other at work. It makes everything between them more heated and exciting. I thought the whole story had a hint of comedy mixed in with a lot of romance. Just the way I like it.

The New Year's Deal by Julie Kenner, another cute story, but not as memorable as the two before it. I have read Kenner's work before and liked it, but I couldn't get into this story.

Meet college sweethearts Cleo and Josh forced to separate 5 years ago when life got in the way. Now it's 5 years later and they meet back up to spend New Year's together in a secluded cabin. Can what they had all those years ago still be brimming under the surface?
I liked this story, but I feel like the other two were better. The previous relationship between the two characters made the story seem not as exciting or interesting as the two before where there was less of a romance between the characters prior to the start of the story. Because of the previous relationship between these two characters it make the story seem less special. Who wouldn't succumb to temptation when left alone with their former lover in a cabin? It just didn't seem as interesting or memorable. Still was a cute story though.

Overall, I liked all three stories and wished that they had been longer stories in three separate books rather than three novellas in one anthology.

December TBR - Holiday book
Holiday Hideout, by various authors

This was a new addition to the anthology lineup, released by Harlequin this season and featured three stories - one centered around Thanksgiving, around Christmas, and around New Years’ Eve. There is an overarching theme involving the cabin that the three couples stay at that ties the three stories together very nicely.

The Thanksgiving Fix By Vicki Lewis Thompson
This was fun, which Thompson is known for. Beth and Mac are set up by the owners of the cabin, the Vickers. Mac is a handyman sent to fix a leak in the kitchen that Vickers purposely created. What ensues is mutual attraction, a huge snowstorm and two people falling in lust, then love. I liked the fact that the initial attraction was quick and the developing feelings had started, but the fact of falling so hard so fast was also addressed.

The Christmas Set-Up by Jill Shalvis
Two competing architects, Zoe and Jason, are set up by his brother and some friends after they have been dancing around each other for a long time. They are set up to wind up at the cabin at the same time, and wind up getting snowed in. The fun and caring and genuine concern for each other, and learning about their very different family experiences, that follows is heartwarming. As with the first story there is a follow up that works to show the development of the relationship and the growth of the characters as people.

The New Year’s Deal by Julie Kenner
Of the three, this was the story I liked the least. This is a reunited lovers story that I think falls a little flat. The first third of the story is spent explaining what had happened to our young lovers, Cleo and Josh, in the past and where they are how. The next 60 percent is the getting back together but also explaining the obstacles that are still in the way, and they are mighty. The last 10 percent is the conclusion and the people changing part. I liked that the hero was willing to change, since it usually seems to be the heroine making major changes and I loved that Cleo stood up for herself and her career. However, I did not like the ending at all and did not think it was plausible. I think there was too much that had changed between the characters in the intervening time for the plan to work. It also seemed very rushed - as if the Josh did not think through what he was doing carefully enough.

This is a cute romance anthology written by three of Harlequin’s leading authors. All three stories are set in a “mystical”, Lake Tahoe cabin owned by college professors Ken and Jillian Vickers. The “mystical” part involves couples falling in love when they stay over. As part of their research, the Vickers are trying to prove that the cabin indeed brings romance to people’s lives. In order to do this, they rent out the cabin throughout the holiday season.

In the first story…

The Thanksgiving Fix by Vicki Lewis Thompson

Beth spends her Thanksgiving holiday in the cabin intending to be alone and getting away from everything and everyone. However, the Vickers arrange for their local handyman, Mac, to pay a house call for fear that the cabin has a leak. It’s not long before the sparks fly and Beth and Mac find their way into each other’s arms.

The Christmas Set-Up by Jill Shalvis

Zoe and Jason are both up for promotions at the same architect firm. They each must come up with a design that will win them the job, but with a little help from a matchmaking brother, a snow storm and a romantic cabin in Lake Tahoe, these two colleagues find much more than the perfect design. They find love.

The New Year's Deal by Julie Kenner

Cleo and Josh always planned to go to college and eventually marry, but when Josh’s father dies, his plans change. He refuses to leave his family or the family business. Cleo and Josh tearfully decide to break up. Five years later, they each remember a plan to reunite for New Year’s. What better place to reunite than a secluded cabin in Lake Tahoe. They rediscover their feelings for each other and wonder if they can give their relationship another try.

My thoughts…

I always enjoy the work of these three authors and these stories were good ones. However, anthologies can be tricky. Sometimes the length of the individual stories just isn’t long enough to develop a believable storyline. I loved the premise for all three stories, but they wrap things up too quickly which is the “nature of the beast” when it comes to anthologies. I would have liked to see more character and plot development.
Basically, I wish these were three full length books. That’s not a bad thing, it’s actually a good thing…I wanted more! This is a great anthology for the holidays though. It gives us a chance to celebrate all three holidays with three different couples. It’s a quick read.

This trio of stories barely qualifies as 'holiday'. Theoretically each occurs during a holiday...Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's, but other than Jill Shalvis having her hero avoid Christmas due to tragic memories from 10 years earlier and her heroine decorating the cabin liberally, these romances have nothing to do with holidays.

Ken and Jillian are convinced that their remote cabin in the Sierra Mountains has a special romance magic, and have set out to prove it with our 3 couples.

The Thanksgiving Fix by Vicki Lewis Thompson finds Beth planning an indulgent solo holiday celebrating singlehood and writing a manifesto to the single life to deliver to her family a month later at the annual Christmas gathering. Enter local handyman and dedicated bachelor Mac, dodging his mother's latest holiday fix-up, and stopping in to fix a leak, one Beth took care of already. Result: instant hot sex and instant love, singlehood tossed aside with no qualms.

The Christmas Set-up by Jill Shalvis introduces us to co-workers and competitors for promotion Jason and Zoe tricked into sharing the cabin, then between bouts of hot sex (which Jason manages even though in excruciating crippling pain from a fall while getting wood), they decide to collaborate on a work project and let the promtion chips fall where they may. Can true love be far behind?

In The New Year's Deal by Julie Kenner we meet Cleo and Josh , college sweethearts and soulmates, who had gone their different ways after college - Cleo to Harvard Law the partner track at a Washington firm, Josh home to save the family mining company after his father's sudden death. On parting they agree to meet 5 year's later in the Sierra Mountains to catch up and, perhaps, rekindle their romance. Can hot sex and true love be far away?

The sex is hot and often inventive, the cabin's romance magic proven, but there are too many life stories for these characters (who are all very likeable) left dangling at the end. Between that and the lack of any real holiday connection in these stories, I was left very dissatisfied.

4 Stars/Fiction; Romance Anthology

I enjoyed each of these three novellas that were centered around a little cabin with its 'magic' ability to either spark or rekindle love between its guests.

The first story The Thanksgiving Fix by Vicki Lewis Thompson is about two people who are happy being single and tired of others trying to intervene on their behalf. When Beth and Mac end up staying at the same cabin over the holiday weekend, will they both still be able to hang on to their beliefs about remaining single? *a steamy and sexy 4 stars

The second story The Christmas Set-Up by Jill Shalvis brings together Zoe and Jason. Co-workers at an architectural firm, they are both working on a design that could land them the next big promotion. Seeking solace to clear his head and focus, Jason heads to the cabin, but a little scheme by Jason's brother delivers a fuming mad Zoe to his door at the most inopportune time. Not wanting to leave Jason in a vulnerable state, Zoe spends the weekend at the cabin and soon the two of them are in a different kind of competition. *loved this story! 5 stars

The final story The New Years Deal by Julie Kenner was about Cleo and Jason. Parting ways when life and college meant different dreams for them, they promised to meet again in five years. With trepidation, they keep their promise to each other and end up at the little Tahoe cabin. Not sure what to expect, they question whether their love has withstood the hands of time. *This was my least favorite story in the book. I didn't care for Cleo's character as much as the others. 3 stars

Overall, I liked this book. It is not without its flaws but I was able to overlook some of the smaller details and enjoy it for what it was. I liked the uniqueness of the setting.

Recommended.
