This past summer, I had the great pleasure of reading The 100 Best Trout Streams In America. This text was written by John Ross and published under a company called Trout Unlimited. As the title suggests, this book has a one to two-page analysis of each trout stream that Ross believes to be in the top 100 in the country.
When deciding what to read for pleasure, the main factor in my choice to read this book was that it provided relevant information to my life. I usually do not enjoy reading fictitious novels that provide no value to my life outside of the book and despite this, I do enjoy reading informational books and articles. This book provided me with information that I not only enjoyed taking in but will help me plan my next fishing trip.
I thought the format of this book was great because each stream was listed under its respective region. I could easily go to a section of the book that lists the best rivers in any region of the country and read about them. I spent the majority of my time reading about places that are near my home in Sun Valley and throughout the Rocky Mountain region. While these articles were a great starting point for my research of fishing spots near where I live, it was not the end. I would use the writeups to spearhead my investigation of these rivers. After reading about a place that looked like a potential place to go, I would spend countless hours researching the fishing there, how I can get there, and when the best time to go would be. There was one stream (that will not be named) that was mentioned in the book that I ended up going to this past summer and the fishing was excellent. This single experience makes reading this book worthwhile.
While this was an excellent informational read, I do think that it could be improved. I like that it is listed by region, but the trout streams within the top 100 are not ranked from one to one hundred in the book. I think that it would be a huge benefit to the book if the top trout streams were ranked. When I picked up the text, I went into reading both wanting and expecting to find out what the #1 trout stream in America was. Unfortunately, I never found that out. While I would’ve ranked the top 100 streams if I was the author, I have no other complaints about how this book was written. I think that it is an excellent book whether the reader is simply reading for fun or starting to plot their next fishing trip. I would recommend this book who has any interest or experience in fly fishing or wants to get into it. Overall, I would rate this book 4.8 out of 5 stars and hope I can stumble across another read that has such relevant information that is written as well as John Ross’ The 100 Best Trout Streams In America.
