Compelling and hard to put down.

Want action? Want horror? Want miracle and myth? And conspiracy mixed within?
There you go, The Mayan Conspiracy is the prefect answer.
This book has it all, based on a Mayan temple and a ruthless expedition to find something hidden but of great value. Two groups wants to have it and the person in charge of the expedition doesn't have the freedom to fail or let the companions know about the true goal of the mission.
First half of the book is slow. In this part, mostly the conspiracies were explained and took place. Next half is all about confronting the fear and survival. There are a few twists, but more than that horror is important. most of the story took place in the jungle. And when the darkness falls fear comes out. It's dangerous to be out there, for there is impossible vicious creatures, also a tribal race who are hostile as hell. Amongst all these chaos there is one lady, one spy, an specialist, a mercenary who must stand tall.
Either way, if you love adventure it can be a treat. But be informed, you have to stay patient and read through the slow parts.
For me it's a decent read.

"পপুল ভাহ" মায়ান সভ্যতার লিপি। কিভাবে মায়ান সভ্যতা সৃষ্টি হয়েছিলো, এবং কিভাবে তারা আমাজন বন থেকে পৃথিবীব্যাপী ছড়িয়ে পড়েছিলো তা খুব দারুন ভাবেই লেখা হয়েছিলো এই লিপিতে।
আমাজনের গহীনে একটা অভিযান চালাতে হবে, তুলান জুয়ুয়া। এমন একটা স্থান যেটা মায়ান সভ্যতার সূচনা ধরা হয়। বহু আগে ভ্রমণ কারি ব্ল্যাকজ্যাক মার্টিনের জার্নালের সূত্রমতে শীতল ফিউশন থাকার কথা সেখানে, যার দারা পৃথিবীকে দূষণ মুক্ত করে এক বিপ্লবের সৃষ্টি হবে।
নতুন শতাব্দীর যাত্রার শুরু থেকেই আমরা বিগত দুই শতাব্দীতে আবিষ্কৃত জ্বালানীর উপর চরমভাবে নির্ভরশীল হয়ে পড়েছি। কিন্তু এগুলো অনেক পুরানো হয়ে গেছে। তাহলে প্রাকৃতিক জ্বালানির বদলে নতুন কি ব্যবহার করা যাবে? আমেরিকান গবেষনা-ভিত্তিক সংঘটন NRI(ন্যাশনাল রিচার্চ ইন্সটিটিউট) এমন একটা উপাত্ত খুঁজে পায় যা আমাজনের জংগলে শীতল ফিউশনের অস্তিত্ব প্রমান করে। যা হতে পারবে নতুন দিনের অফুরুন্ত শক্তির উৎস,যাতে হবে না কোন পরিবেশ দূষণও। তা খুঁজে পাওয়ার লক্ষ্যে NRI তাদের একটা দল আমাজনে পাঠায়। কিন্তু দলটি ব্যর্থ হয়। এবং তাদের কেউই বেঁচে ফিরে আসতে পারে না।
NRI কিন্তু দমবার পাত্র নয়। তারা আবার নতুন করে সেখানে দল দল পাঠানোর সিধান্ত নিল। নতুন দলের নেতৃত্ব দেয়া হয় কম বয়সী তরুণী ডানিয়েল কে।
প্রশিক্ষিত সামরিক সদস্য, দুজন গবেষক আর সি আই এর প্রাক্তন সদস্য পাইলট হকার কে নিয়ে গঠিত ডানিয়েল লেইডলের দল।
এই অভিযানে ডানিয়েলের দরকার হয় একজন দক্ষ পাইলটের। উপন্যাসের অন্যতম চরিত্র প্রাক্তন CIA এর সদস্য হকারই হলো সেই পাইলট। কিন্তু বর্তমানে হকার মানুষের চোখে একজন অপরাধী হিসাবে খ্যাত। ইন্টারপোল তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করতে চায় , তার প্রাক্তণ CIA সহকর্মীরা চায় তাকে খুন করতে। হকার ডানিয়েলের প্রস্তাবে রাজি হলো, বিনিময়ে সে ডানিয়েলেরর সাথে একটা চুক্তি করলো। হকার ডানিয়েলকে সাহায্য করলে ডানিয়েল সব ধরনের অপরাধের খাতা থেকে তার নাম মুছে দিবে,সাথে সে তাকে জীবিত অবস্থায় দেশে যাবার ব্যবস্থা করবে।
অভিযানের জন্য গঠন করা হলো একটি দল, কিন্তু অভিযান শুরু হতেই তারা বুঝতে পারলো এ কাজে শুধুমাত্র তারাই নেই, অন্য কোন গোপন সংঘ ও আছে। সেই সাথে আমাজনের মত গহীন জঙ্গলে আছে চোলাকায়ানদের মত ভয়ংকর স্থানীয় উপজাতি। এসব পাড়ি দিয়ে পৌছাতে হবে পৃথিবী থেকে হারিয়ে যাওয়া মায়ান শহর তুলান জুজুয়া , যা মায়ানদের একদম আদি উৎস এবং তাদের একরকম কথিত স্বর্গরাজ্য। মায়ান গ্রন্থ 'পপুল ভাহ' থেকে জানা যায় এই স্বর্গ থেকেই তারা ছড়িয়ে পড়েছিল সারা বিশ্বে। সেখানেই মিলবে শীতল ফিউশনের সন্ধান।
হঠাৎ,আমাজনের জংগলে অভিযাত্রী দল মুখামুখি হলো এক অচেনা শত্রুর। বইয়ের শেষের দিকে তারা সম্মুখীন হলো এক ধরনের ভয়ংকর পৌরণিক দানবের। শুরু হলো এক জীবন মরণ যুদ্ধ , এদিকে গোলা বারুদ ও আস্তে আস্তে শেষ হয়ে যাচ্ছে।
এডভেঞ্চার, ইতিহাস, অনুবাদ সব কিছুই পারফেক্ট হয়েছে। পড়তে গিয়ে আমি থ্রিল, আর অনেক টুইস্ট পেয়েছি, পাতায় পাতায় অজানা সব রহস্যে ভরা। দূর্দান্ত অভিযান, টাইম ট্রাভেল, মিরাকল, কন্সপিরেসি থিউরি, মিথলজি অনবদ্য ছিলো। কাহিনী টা আমার মনে গেঁথে থাকার মতো। হকার চরিত্রটাকে বেশ ভালো লেগেছে।
লেখক "পপুল ভাহ" এর উপর ভিত্তি করে দারুণ কল্পনা শক্তি কাজে লাগিয়ে রহস্য, রোমাঞ্চ, অ্যাকশন আর এডভেঞ্চারে পরিপূর্ণ করে "দ্য মায়ান কনস্পিরেসি" বইটি লিখেছেন।
আপনি এই বইটি পড়লে মায়ান সভ্যতা সম্পর্কে ভালো ধারণা তো পাবেনই, সেই সাথে আমাজনের গহীন অরণ্যে হারিয়ে যাবেন।

আমার কাছে বেশ ভাল লেগেছে। ব্রাজিলের বনজঙ্গলে অ্যাডভেঞ্চার মোটেও মন্দ ছিলনা। অ্যাকশনগুলো দুর্দান্ত লেগেছে। অনুবাদ যথেষ্ট সাবলিল ছিল, ভাল লেগেছে।

What do you get when you cram a book with clichéd plots? Black Rain. The book has rainforests, Mayan ruins, covert operations, mercenaries, time travel, gun fights, helicopter crashes, primitive native tribes, mysterious crystals, hieroglyphics, environmental consciousness, strange creatures, lions and tigers and bears, oh my! (okay, it doesn't have lions and tigers and bears. But hey, since it had everything else, why not throw in the lions and tigers and bears as well?). I guess the author couldn't decide whether he wanted to recreate Indiana Jones, Alien, or Jurassic Park, so he combined every story line he could think of and stuffed them all into Black Rain.
The book just tries too hard. The actions don't make sense. There is way too much going on, distractingly so. The characters are the typical, predictable bunch - the overweight cigarette smoking tech guy (hey, wasn't he in Jurassic Park?), the tough smart woman (only she isn't), the big bad brave black ops guy. The multiple action/science fiction story lines are overkill. What could have been a good read is just a very long book. Why have I been reading so many of these mindless thrillers lately? Uh, I don’t know. Keep hoping to find a good one, I guess.
The book just tries too hard. The actions don't make sense. There is way too much going on, distractingly so. The multiple action/science fiction story lines are overkill. What could have been a good read is just a very long book. Why have I been reading so many of these mindless thrillers lately? Uh, I don’t know. Keep hoping to find a good one, I guess.

আমাজনের ভেতর ভয়ঙ্কর, দুর্ধর্ষ, হরর, মিলিটারি এডভেঞ্চার। কন্সপিরেসি গল্পগুলোতে সাধারণত ষড়যন্ত্র, বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা, গুপ্ত চক্রান্ত থাকে। এটায়ও ছিলো। তবে এটাতে কন্সপিরেসি তেমন প্রভাব ফেলতে পারে নি। এরচেয়ে বেশী ছিলো হরর-এডভেঞ্চার-মিলিটারি-সায়েন্স এলিমেন্ট। শুরুটা একেবারেই সাধারণ। বনে ঢোকার আগ পর্যন্ত কোনো ঘাত-প্রতিঘাত নেই। আননৌন সাব্জেক্ট এটাকও ছিলো একেবারে উইলবার স্মিথের 'দ্য সেভেন্থ স্ক্রোল' বইয়ের মত। কিন্তু মাঝ থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত একেবারে দুর্দান্ত। এডভেঞ্চার এর চেয়ে আমার হরর আর মিলিটারি এলিমেন্ট বেশী লেগেছে বইটায়। বইতে একটা বড় প্রভাব ফেলেছে জিপাকনা নামক সেই ভয়ঙ্কর অপার্থিব প্রাণী। এটার জন্য হরর ফিলিংস পাচ্ছিলাম। এই বইটা মায়ান মিথকে কেন্দ্র করে লেখা হলেও ততো বেশী ইনফরমেশন ছিলো না। তবে মায়ানদের নিয়ে ইন্টারেস্টিং কিছু জানতে পেরেছি। যাদের পুথি অনুযায়ী মানবজাতি সৃষ্টির আগে সবাই ছিলো কাঠমানব। মায়ানদের স্বর্গভূমি তুলান যুযুয়া, উপমানব সপ্ত ম্যাকাও, অসূর দেবতা জিবালবা, আর জিবালবার রক্ষাকর্তা জিপাকনা নিয়ে বেশ আলোচনা আছে। বইয়ের চরিত্রগুলোর মধ্যে ম্যাককার্টার চরিত্রটা বেশ লেগেছে, যদিও এটা কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্র নয়��� মানবিকতা, জ্ঞানবান এই চরিত্র দিয়েই মায়ান মিথের বেশীরভাগ আলোচনা করেছে লেখক। বইয়ের মূল চরিত্র হকার আর ড্যানিয়েলি। হকার চরিত্র চাতুর্যময়, শক্তিশালী হলেও ড্যানিয়েলি চরিত্রটা প্রায় ধোয়াশা ছিলো। সুসান ব্রিগস, ভেরহোভেন, মুর, কফম্যান চরিত্রগুলোকেও বেশ সাজিয়েছে লেখক। তবে স্টুয়ার্ট গিবসের ব্যাপারটা লেখক খোলাসা করেনি আর পরবর্তীতে গল্পে আনেওনি। যার কারণে এটাকে ফুল্লি কন্সপিরেসি থ্রিলারে ফেলতে পারলাম না।
অনুবাদ একেবারে খাসা। তবে কিছু কিছু জায়গা বোধ হয় অনুবাদক স্কিপ করেছে। একেবারে শুরুতে একজায়গায় হকারকে দেশে পাঠানো হয়েছিলো অস্ত্র আনার জন্য। কিন্তু পরের পৃষ্ঠাতেই হকারকে বনে দেখাচ্ছিলো। জায়গাটায় একটু ধাক্কা খেয়েছিলাম।
ওভারঅল এডভেঞ্চার, হরর প্রেমীরা ট্রাই করে দেখতে পারেন। পড়া শেষে হাতটা তৃপ্তির সাথে চাটতেও হতে পারে।।

বইটা পড়ার এক সপ্তাহ আগেই আমাজনিয়া শেষ করেছি। আমাজান নিয়ে পরপর দুটো অ্যাডভেঞ্চার আমাজান সম্পর্কে আগ্রহ ক্রমশ বাড়িয়েই তুলছে।
গল্পটা ভালই। অনুবাদ বেশ ভাল। শব্দের চয়ন যথার্থ। অসীম ভাইয়ের কাছে আসা সামনে আরো ভাল কিছু মৌলিক আর অনুবাদ পাব। :)

Too many books are released every year, trying to utilise ancient mystery, myth and present geopolitics into the making of a techno-thriller. Many of them fail, but some succeed. This book, for me, was a success because:
1. It brought Mayan Civilisation and its myths into focus. While Biblical myths are explored incessantly, any break in that routine is welcome.
2. The characters were well-developed, with a tinge of humour flavouring many dialogues.
3. Instead of hash of usual tropes like aliens in Amazon, the author managed to develop a new twist.
Certain things made the book rather flat. These were the villains and excessive explanations of their actions. But overall, I enjoyed the book, especially the ecological angle that seems to be talking about a dark and perilous future for all of us.
Recommended.

আচ্ছা, টাইম ট্রাভেল নিয়ে কি মতামত আপনার? বিশ্বাস করতে ইচ্ছে করে তাই না? সম্ভব হতেও তো পারে! অতীতে যে জিনিসগুলো অবাস্তব মনে করা হতো, বিজ্ঞান কিন্তু আস্তে আস্তে সবই বাস্তব করে দেখাচ্ছে....

আসলে প্রতিক্রিয়াটা এমন কনফিউজিং যে কি লেখব বুঝতে পারছি না।
এককথায় বলতে গেলে- খারাপ লাগেনি, আবার যেমন আশা করেছি তেমন ভালোও লাগেনি। এখন এর জন্য বই দায়ী, না আমার 'এক সাথে তিন বই পড়া', 'গ্যাপে গ্যাপে পড়া', 'যেহেতু আমাজন রিলেটেড গল্প, অবচেতন ভাবে #আমাজনিয়া'র সাথে তুলনা করা', নাকি আমার 'কিছুই ভালো না লাগার রোগ'- কোনটা যে দায়ী বুঝতে পারলাম না। -_-
বেশ কিছু হালকা অসঙ্গতি রয়েছে, যেমন একজনের মৃত্যু, কিন্তু সেটা বললে স্পয়লার হবে বলে স্কিপ করছি। অল্প কিছু বানান ভুল/প্রিন্টিং মিসটেক ছিল।
কিন্তু কনসেপ্টটা, মূল রহস্যটা অভিনব। বইয়ে এটাই আমার সবচেয়ে ভালো লেগেছে। একদম টিপিক্যাল আমেরিকান অভিযানের গল্প যেমন হয় এটা তেমনই। লেখক ক্লাইভ কাসলারের ভক্ত, বইয়ে তার প্রভাব আছে ভালই। মায়ান মিথের তথ্যগুলো চিত্তাকর্ষক। সেকেন্ড হাফে দারুণ কিছু টুইস্ট রয়েছে। আর বইয়ে লেখক যে মেসেজটা দিয়েছেন তা আপনাকে ভাবাবে অবশ্যই( অলরেডি পোস্টের একদম শুরুর লাইনটা নিয়ে ভাবছেন না? )
একটা ব্যাপার আমি নিজেও বিশ্বাস করি, যা রটে তার কিছুটা তো বটেই। এত এত মিথ, লোকগাথা সব এক বাক্যে কুসংস্কার বা বানানো বলে উড়িয়ে দেয়া মোটেও বুদ্ধিমানের কাজ না। রূপকথার রূপকের পিছনে না জানি কি সত্যি লুকিয়ে আছে...
ব্যক্তিগত মতামত, এই কনসেপ্টে জেমস রোলিন্স বা ড্যান ব্রাউন লিখলে একটা মাস্টারপিস হতো নিঃসন্দেহে।

আমাজনের গহীনে এক রহস্য উদ্ধারের অভিযান। পৃথিবী থেকে হারিয়ে যাওয়া মায়ান শহর তুলান জুযুয়া খোঁজার গোপন অভিযান (যদিও আমাজনের দিকে মায়ান সভ্যতা খুঁজে পাওয়া লেখকের কল্পনা বৈ আর কিছু নয়)।
আমেরিকার ন্যাশনাল রিসার্চ ইন্সটিটিউট NRI একটি দলকে পাঠিয়ে ছিল আমাজনের গহীনে কিন্তু লাপাত্তা হয়ে যায় সবাই। তারও কয়েকবছর পরে আবারও একটি দলকে পাঠানোর সিদ্ধান্ত নেয় NRI আর দায়িত্ব দেয়া হয় তরুণী ড্যানিয়েলি লেইডলকে। যদিও এবারের অভিযান সহজ নয়, চলছে ষড়যন্ত্র; নিজেদের মধ্যেই রয়েছে বিশ্বাসঘাতক! ব্রাজিলের মানাউসে গিয়ে ড্যানিয়েলির সাথে যুক্ত হল পালিয়ে বেড়ানো পাইলট হকার আর বাকি সঙ্গীরা। এদের নিয়েই এবারের দল। অভিযানের শুরুতেই হামলার স্বীকার হয় ওরা। সামনে আছে হিংস্র আদিবাসী গোষ্ঠী চোলোকোয়ান। আমাজনের গহীনে যাওয়ার পর পরিষ্কার হল শুধু ওরাই নয়, ওদের সাথে সাথে চলে আরেকটি দল। তবে মিত্র নয় শত্রু। একেরপর এক হামলা আসছে শত্রুদের থেকে নয়তো আদিবাসী গোষ্ঠীদের থেকে। এর মধ্যেই উদয় হয় পপুল ভাহ এর পৌরাণিক দৈত্য!
সত্যি বলতে এই বইয়ের কাহিনীর সেট-আপের সাথে জেমস রলিন্সের আমাজনিয়া বইয়ের কাহিনীর সেট-আপে প্রায়ই হুবুহু মিল। ওখানেও শুরুতে একটা দল হাওয়া হয়ে যায়, আরেক দল যাত্রা শুরু করে; শত্রু দলও ছিল, আদিবাসী গোষ্ঠীও ছিল, হিংস্র প্রাণীও ছিল। আমাজনিয়া বইটা চমৎকার লেগেছিল। আর কাহিনীর সাথে এমন মিল থাকায় বারবার মাথায় আমাজনিয়া ঘুরছিল।
অনুবাদ পড়তে তেমন মন্দ লাগে নি। তাছাড়া বাকি সব ঠিকঠাক, একশন সিন গুলোর বর্ণনা পড়তে দারুণ লেগেছে। কিন্তু বইয়ের কাহিনী মনে হল টেনে লম্বা করা হয়েছে। পড়তে পড়তে বোর হয়ে যাচ্ছিলাম মাঝের দিকে, শেষের দিকে।

First in the Hawker & Laidlaw thriller series with a heavy dose of horror and revolving around Danielle Laidlaw and Hawker, ex-CIA. This story takes place primarily in Brazil.

My Take
It started off feeling same-same, but things developed into a story I could not put down. It sure kept my heart rate up!
I loved being inside Hawker's head as he analyzes what's happening and the likely reasons for it.
Man, Brown plays his characters well giving them unique personalities with unexpected deliveries. The professor is so sweet as he gets caught up in his subject while the innocent student holds up amazingly well. I love that Danielle has a heart and thinks the possibilities through, wanting to help people.
It's all positive and save-the-world until it descends into greed and the desire for power. It's the events in this that provide this series an uncommon beginning for the primary character: Danielle. I won't know until I dive into #2, but I have to wonder if she'll be changing employers. It's as if we came in on the tail end of Danielle's current job just as she has a change of conscience, and her real world will begin in the next installment. Don't get me wrong. Black Rain is an excellent start, unique in how Brown introduces us to the two main characters. It's a lot like life, with meetings and new people affecting how we live.
Yeah, the usual tropes are here: the greedy backstabbers along with the greedy, power-hungry businessman with their inevitable endings. But Brown keeps it interesting 90% of the time with his Maya setting and the time traveler(s) who have such an effect on our past. It's the conclusions that the survivors reach that made me fearful of where our society is heading.
I do love how Brown plays on the guilt our good guys feel. Very nicely done. I also like how Brown portrays Hawker: intelligent, perceptive, and with lateral thought processes. He's like a grimy James Bond. As for the betrayal...oh, boy. It's hard to believe that there are people like that out in the world. Yet I know they are. What made it even more terrifying was how, how sympathetic the bad guy was. So warm and reasonable sounding, even as you knew he was simply setting them up for the kill.
The premise of Gibbs and his plans seemed a bit farfetched, but then again, this is Washington, D.C. Wouldn't put anything past them.
Then there's how Brown pulled in the Mayan culture and its legends. Wow. Very plausible and simply made the story even more intriguing.
Oh, boy. That ending. Brown knows how to play the tension and drama. I gotta gets me the next in line, Black Sun .

It's been a hard slog investigating an expedition that occurred decades ago. It only gets worse with Moore's news from the head office, even with Laidlaw's discovery.
Still Gibbs is dangling a mighty fine carrot in front of Laidlaw, and she's too stubborn to resist it. Besides, if you could save the world, wouldn't you try?
The Characters
Danielle Laidlaw is being mentored by Arnold Moore for the National Research Institute (NRI). Both are field operatives tasked with "examin[ing] cutting-edge projects and determin[ing] what technologies, if any, could be valuable to the United States".
The expedition
Private security is headed up by Pik Verhoven, a South African mercenary who has tangled with Hawker in the past. Hawker is ex-CIA and a pilot, disavowed for past activities. Professor Michael McCarter, a senior professor of archeology in New York City, has recently lost his beloved wife to cancer, and now he wants life to have meaning again. Mark Polaski handles communications tech while William Devers is a linguist who speaks several native languages. Susan Briggs is a student from McCarter's university about to enter the master's program in Archeological Studies. Brazos is one of the porters.
NRI
Stuart Gibbs is the paranoid director of operations, who runs the place like a private club. And he hates and distrusts Moore. Matt Blundin, one of Gibbs' Boys, is chief of security and the best in the business.
Chollokwan tribe
Putock leads one of the bands of warriors. Ualon is the Old One, the Great Father and leader of the tribe.
The Nuree tribe is one of many terrified of the Chollokwan.
The really bad guys
Vogel is also a mercenary, and almost impossible to fool as Remo, a hired thug, finds out. Richard Kaufman is CEO and principal owner of Futrex Systems, Inc., a defense contractor who rakes it in hand over fist. And it's still not enough. Norman Lang is his chief scientist in areas of unusual interest. Brilliant, he'd been caught falsifying data and now works for Kaufman. Eric is another mercenary.
Señor Duarte Medina is Moore's contact in Manaus for a charter boat. Sven is a pretty boy contact with a lethal streak.
Jack Dixon is a mercenary and good at it. Blackjack Martin was a wealthy fortune hunter back in 1926/27 who launched an expedition and returned a laughing stock. Roche was another South African SAS who went too far.
The Cover
The cover is a meaty looking, textured red that splits on a slight vertical diagonal in the background with the author's name and the title in a concrete-looking texture, pebbled with fat raindrops.
I have to wonder if Brown chose the title Black Rain for its association with acid rain. Something to think about.

❛দ্য মায়ান কনস্পিরেসি❜ উপন্যাস নিয়ে বিশেষ কিছু বলার থাকলেও সেইভাবে বলতে চাচ্ছি না। বইয়ের মতো কন্সপিরেসি তৈরি করতে ইচ্ছা হচ্ছে। কিন্তু সেটাও সম্ভব না। কারণ পুরো উপন্যাস জুড়ে অদ্ভুত এক মুগ্ধতা কাজ করলেও, হোঁচট খেতে হয়েছে অনেক জায়গায়। বিশেষ করে যে অভিযানে লেখক আমাদের সঙ্গী করে নিতে চেয়েছেন সেই সবুজে ঘেরা অরণ্য; যে অরণ্যে কল্পনায় ও বইয়ের পাতায় ঘুরেছি আরও বহুবার। তবে পার্থক্য এই বইতে বেশ ভালোই রয়েছে।
❛দ্য মায়ান কনস্পিরেসি❜ উপন্যাসে মায়ান সভ্যতা ও বিশেষ এক ফিউশনের কথা ফোকাসে রাখলেও; এর ভেতরে রয়েছে একেবারে অন্যরকম কিছু। সেই কিছুটা বেশ ভয়ানক ও রোমহষর্ক। ছোটোবেলায় পাওয়া ভূতের ভয়ের কিয়দংশ খুঁজে না পেলেও, শিহরিত হওয়ার একটা আভাস থেকেই যায়। পুরো উপন্যাস এক টানা পড়া যায় শুধুমাত্র লেখক গ্রাহাম ব্রাউনের লেখনশৈলীর জোরে। মায়ান সভ্যতার বিভিন্ন বিষয়বস্তু নিয়ে যে আলোচনা উনি করেছেন, তা বেশ গুছানো আর আকর্ষণীয় লেগেছে।
❛পপুল ভাহ❜ কী বা মায়ান লোকদের কী কাজে লাগে, সেই সম্পর্কে লেখক বেশ সুন্দর করে বুঝিয়েছেন। গল্পের শেষে এই নিয়ে সারাংশও লেখা আছে। যা থেকে মায়ান সভ্যতার উত্থান নিয়ে সাম্যক ধারণা লাভ করা যায়। তবে যেহেতু এই উপন্যাস ফিকশন, কাহিনির প্রয়োজনে অনেককিছু লেখকের মনগড়া হতে পারে। শুধুমাত্র ❛পপুল ভাহ❜-এর কিছু শুদ্ধ অংশ লেখক উপন্যাসের সাথে মিশিয়ে গল্পে রূপ দিয়েছেন। আর এই পুরো রূপ ঘিরে রয়েছে—কাঠমানবদের রহস্য ও তুলুন জুযুয়া নিয়ে! কারা বা কে এই কাঠমানব এবং তুলুন জুযুয়া বা কী; তা জানতে হলে এই বই পড়া আবশ্যক।

লেখক গ্রাহাম ব্রাউনের গল্প বলার ফাঁদে একবার আটকে গেলে; শেষ না করে উদ্ধার হওয়ার উপায় নেই। ❛দ্য মায়ান কনস্পিরেসি❜ উপন্যাস সব মিলিয়ে দুর্দান্ত এক জার্নি। আমাদের চিরাচরিত আমাজন জঙ্গলকে লেখক সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন আঙ্গিকে উপস্থাপনা করেছেন। উত্তেজনার কমতি নেই, তবে কোনো হিংস্র জানোয়ার দ্বারা এই উত্তেজনা সৃষ্টি হয়নি। হয়েছে এক পৌরাণিক দানবের মাধ্যমে। বেশ অদ্ভুত সেই দানবের সাক্ষাৎ পেতে চাইলে এই বই আপনার জন্য উৎকৃষ্ট। ভাগ্য ও বিশ্বাস এই দুই পুরো উপন্যাসের উপজীব্য বিষয়। কন্সপিরেসি ততটা না থাকলেও; অ্যাকশনের কোনো কমতি লেখক রাখেনি। আর থ্রিল বা টুইস্টের কমতি নেই-ই বললে চলে।

ঘটনার সূত্রপাত মানাউস, ব্রাজিল থেকে। ড্যানিয়েলি (ডেনিয়েলি) লেইডল ও আরনল্ড মুরের কথোপকথন দিয়ে শুরু। পরিকল্পনা অনুযায়ী NRI-এর এক গোপনীয় কাজে ড্যানিয়েলিকে যেতে হবে আমাজনের গহীনে, সাথে থাকবে না অভিজ্ঞ পার্টনার আরনল্ড মুর। অথচ পূর্বে এই একই অভিযানে গিয়ে প্রাণ হারিয়েছে তাদেরই কয়েকজন সহযোগী। কী খুঁজতে গিয়ে তারা প্রাণ হারিয়েছে আর কীভাবে; সেই রহস্যের পাশাপাশি খোঁজ করতে হবে দুনিয়া রক্ষাকারী এক ফিউশনের। যে ফিউশনের আশীর্বাদে বদলে দিবে পুরো পৃথিবীর ভবিষ্যৎ! ড্যানিয়েলির দরকার এখন হকারকে। কে এই হকার?
গল্পের সূচনা দারুণ আগ্রহ জাগানিয়া। একবার পড়া শুরু করলে কয়েক অধ্যায় কোন দিক দিয়ে উবে যাবে বোঝার উপায় নেই।
● গল্প বুনট—
গল্প বলার সৌন্দর্যে পুরো উপন্যাস বেশ মজার লেগেছে। লেখক পুরো প্লটের সিকোয়েন্স সাজিয়েছেন অনেক যত্ন সহকারে। একেবারে কাঠ কুঁদে বানানো মসৃণ কোনো কারুকাজের মতোই। তবে পুরো প্লটে অভিযোগের একটা তীর আমার হাতে এখনও ধরা রয়েছে। সেটাকে ছেড়ে দিলে, সোজা গিয়ে বিঁধবে ‘খাবার বা খাদ্য’-এর ওপরে। উইয়ার্ড তাই না? কেন সেটা বলি, লেখক পুরো আমাজন জঙ্গল ঘুরিয়ে খাবারের প্রয়োজনীয়তা দেখাল কি-না একেবারে শেষে এসে! অথচ আমাজনে বিশুদ্ধ পানি ও খাবার জোগাড় করার মতো কষ্টসাধ্য কাজ দ্বিতীয়ত কিছু আছে বলে জানা নেই। এই পুরো খাদ্য চক্রের বিষয়টা আমাজন অভিযাত্রীদের মাথা ঘামানোর কারণ না দেখে হতাশ হতে হলো। গল্পে লেখক এতটাই মজে ছিলেন যে, কে কী খেল তার কোনো খোঁজ রাখেননি ও লিখেননি। এ-ছাড়া প্লটে কিছু ছোটোখাটো গড়মিল দেখা গিয়েছে। এতে মূল লেখকের কমতি না সম্পাদনার ঘাটতি রয়েছে তা জানা নেই। অনুবাদকের দোষ এতে আমি দিব না। যেখানে উনি খাবারের মতো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ জিনিস পুরো উপন্যাসে একবার দেখিয়েছেন তাও আমাজনের মতো জঙ্গল অভিযানে, তা বড়োই আশ্চর্য করেছে আমাকে।
● লেখনশৈলী—
লেখনশৈলী দারুণ। এই নিয়ে বেশি উপমা ঝাড়ার দরকার নেই।
● বর্ণনাশৈলী—
পুরো উপন্যাসের খুঁটিনাটি বিষয়বস্তু, অ্যাকশন সিকোয়েন্স, অ্যাডভেঞ্চার মোমেন্ট, মায়ান সভ্যতা নিয়ে গসিপ এ-ছাড়া গল্পে আছে এমন জিনিসপাতি পুঁজি করে পারিপার্শ্বিক আবহের সাথে মিশিয়ে দারুণ সিনেম্যাটিক দৃশ্যের রচনা লেখক করতে সফল হয়েছেন। পুরো উপন্যাস যেন জীবন্ত সিনেমা হয়ে ধরা দিয়েছে মানসপটে।
● চরিত্রায়ন—
চরিত্রের শেষ নেই। আছে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, তুলনামূলক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এবং সর্বাধিক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ চরিত্র। অর্থাৎ কেউ ফেলনা নয়, যে-ই উপন্যাসের পাতায় এসেছে তাকে লেখক নিজের ইমেজ বজায় রাখার কারিশমা দিয়েছে। সেইজন্য আলাদাভাবে সাবপ্লটও বানানো হয়েছে প্রত্যকটি চরিত্রের জন্য। কেউ সেই ইমেজ ধরে রেখে লড়াই করেছে, কেউ জীবন দিয়েছে আর কেউ-এর কী ঘটেছে তা এখনও রহস্য। মানে খোলসা করেনি লেখক। বেঁচে বর্তে থাকলে তো ভালোই।
● অবসান—
সকল অবসান সুখের নয়, আবার কিছু সুখেরও হয়। এই উপন্যাসের অবসানে দুই-ই অনুভূতি বিদ্যমান। না পাওয়ার পাওনা, লেখক ছেড়ে দেয় না। আর কিছু পেতে হলে ত্যাগ তো করতেই হবে। পাঠকের সেই প্রেক্ষিতে কিছুটা ত্যাগ করা উচিত। শেষটাও অনেক কিছু ত্যাগ করে প্রাপ্তি ঘটার শিহরণের মতো।
● খুচরা আলাপ—
মায়ান সভ্যতার ওপর বেজড্ করে পুরো উপন্যাস লেখা। সাথে রয়েছে আইটি বিভাগের অনেক খুঁটিনাটি বিষয় এবং বিজ্ঞানের অগ্রযাত্রার পরিকল্পনা। অতীত, বর্তমান, ভবিষ্যৎ; এই তিন কাল এই উপন্যাসের আনাচেকানাচে গভীরভাবে জড়িয়ে আছে। থ্রিলের কমতি নেই, আছে মনোমুগ্ধকর সব বিবরণ। সেটা হোক জঙ্গলের বা কোনো শহরের শুভ্র সাদা বরফে ঢাকা রাস্তার। দারুণ!
➣ লেখক ও অনুবাদক নিয়ে কিছু কথা—
কোনো লেখকের লেখার প্রেমে পড়তে—তাঁর হাফ ডজন বই পড়া লাগে না। আবার সব বই যে ভালো লাগবে তা-ও না। গ্রাহাম ব্রাউনের ক্ষেত্রে আমি এই কমন উদাহরণটি দিব। এর গূঢ় অর্থ—আগামীতে ওনার কোনো বই আমি হাতছাড়া করছি না।
অনুবাদক অসীম পিয়াস ভাইয়ের প্রথম অনুবাদ। গুছানো ছিল বেশ। শব্দচয়নে ভ্যারাইটি দেখা না গেলেও প্রচলিত ও ইংরেজি শব্দ মিলিয়ে বাক্য গঠনে তেমন জটিলতা দেখা যায়নি। কিছুক্ষেত্রে সিকোয়েন্স ত্রুটি দেখা দিলেও, সেটা যে মূল লেখকের ত্রুটি তা বলার অপেক্ষা রাখে না৷ তবে পুরো বই ছিল সুখপাঠ্য, মূল লেখকের লেখার ধাঁচ প্রায় অক্ষত রেখে কাজটা সম্পূর্ণ করেছেন অনুবাদক।
● সম্পাদনা ও বানান—
সম্পাদনা ঘাটতি ও বানান বিভ্রাটের কমতি নেই। এই নিয়ে অনেকে অনেক আলোচনা করেছে। তাই স্কিপ করে গেলাম। বই ভালো লেগেছে এইটাই বড়ো কথা।

গল্প বলার সৌন্দর্যে পুরো উপন্যাস বেশ মজার লেগেছে। লেখক পুরো প্লটের সিকোয়েন্স সাজিয়েছেন অনেক যত্ন সহকারে। একেবারে কাঠ কুঁদে বানানো মসৃণ কোনো কারুকাজের মতোই। তবে পুরো প্লটে অভিযোগের একটা তীর আমার হাতে এখনও ধরা রয়েছে। সেটাকে ছেড়ে দিলে, সোজা গিয়ে বিঁধবে ‘খাবার বা খাদ্য’-এর ওপরে। উইয়ার্ড তাই না? কেন সেটা বলি, লেখক পুরো আমাজন জঙ্গল ঘুরিয়ে খাবারের প্রয়োজনীয়তা দেখাল কি-না একেবারে শেষে এসে! অথচ আমাজনে বিশুদ্ধ পানি ও খাবার জোগাড় করার মতো কষ্টসাধ্য কাজ দ্বিতীয়ত কিছু আছে বলে জানা নেই। এই পুরো খাদ্য চক্রের বিষয়টা আমাজন অভিযাত্রীদের মাথা ঘামানোর কারণ না দেখে হতাশ হতে হলো। গল্পে লেখক এতটাই মজে ছিলেন যে, কে কী খেল তার কোনো খোঁজ রাখেননি ও লিখেননি। এ-ছাড়া প্লটে কিছু ছোটোখাটো গড়মিল দেখা গিয়েছে। এতে মূল লেখকের কমতি না সম্পাদনার ঘাটতি রয়েছে তা জানা নেই। অনুবাদকের দোষ এতে আমি দিব না। যেখানে উনি খাবারের মতো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ জিনিস পুরো উপন্যাসে একবার দেখিয়েছেন তাও আমাজনের মতো জঙ্গল অভিযানে, তা বড়োই আশ্চর্য করেছে আমাকে।

● বর্ণনাশৈলী—
পুরো উপন্যাসের খুঁটিনাটি বিষয়বস্তু, অ্যাকশন সিকোয়েন্স, অ্যাডভেঞ্চার মোমেন্ট, মায়ান সভ্যতা নিয়ে গসিপ এ-ছাড়া গল্পে আছে এমন জিনিসপাতি পুঁজি করে পারিপার্শ্বিক আবহের সাথে মিশিয়ে দারুণ সিনেম্যাটিক দৃশ্যের রচনা লেখক করতে সফল হয়েছেন। পুরো উপন্যাস যেন জীবন্ত সিনেমা হয়ে ধরা দিয়েছে মানসপটে।
● চরিত্রায়ন—
চরিত্রের শেষ নেই। আছে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, তুলনামূলক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এবং সর্বাধিক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ চরিত্র। অর্থাৎ কেউ ফেলনা নয়, যে-ই উপন্যাসের পাতায় এসেছে তাকে লেখক নিজের ইমেজ বজায় রাখার কারিশমা দিয়েছে। সেইজন্য আলাদাভাবে সাবপ্লটও বানানো হয়েছে প্রত্যকটি চরিত্রের জন্য। কেউ সেই ইমেজ ধরে রেখে লড়াই করেছে, কেউ জীবন দিয়েছে আর কেউ-এর কী ঘটেছে তা এখনও রহস্য। মানে খোলসা করেনি লেখক। বেঁচে বর্তে থাকলে তো ভালোই।
● অবসান—
সকল অবসান সুখের নয়, আবার কিছু সুখেরও হয়। এই উপন্যাসের অবসানে দুই-ই অনুভূতি বিদ্যমান। না পাওয়ার পাওনা, লেখক ছেড়ে দেয় না। আর কিছু পেতে হলে ত্যাগ তো করতেই হবে। পাঠকের সেই প্রেক্ষিতে কিছুটা ত্যাগ করা উচিত। শেষটাও অনেক কিছু ত্যাগ করে প্রাপ্তি ঘটার শিহরণের মতো।
● খুচরা আলাপ—
মায়ান সভ্যতার ওপর বেজড্ করে পুরো উপন্যাস লেখা। সাথে রয়েছে আইটি বিভাগের অনেক খুঁটিনাটি বিষয় এবং বিজ্ঞানের অগ্রযাত্রার পরিকল্পনা। অতীত, বর্তমান, ভবিষ্যৎ; এই তিন কাল এই উপন্যাসের আনাচেকানাচে গভীরভাবে জড়িয়ে আছে। থ্রিলের কমতি নেই, আছে মনোমুগ্ধকর সব বিবরণ। সেটা হোক জঙ্গলের বা কোনো শহরের শুভ্র সাদা বরফে ঢাকা রাস্তার। দারুণ!
➣ লেখক ও অনুবাদক নিয়ে কিছু কথা—
কোনো লেখকের লেখার প্রেমে পড়তে—তাঁর হাফ ডজন বই পড়া লাগে না। আবার সব বই যে ভালো লাগবে তা-ও না। গ্রাহাম ব্রাউনের ক্ষেত্রে আমি এই কমন উদাহরণটি দিব। এর গূঢ় অর্থ—আগামীতে ওনার কোনো বই আমি হাতছাড়া করছি না।
অনুবাদক অসীম পিয়াস ভাইয়ের প্রথম অনুবাদ। গুছানো ছিল বেশ। শব্দচয়নে ভ্যারাইটি দেখা না গেলেও প্রচলিত ও ইংরেজি শব্দ মিলিয়ে বাক্য গঠনে তেমন জটিলতা দেখা যায়নি। কিছুক্ষেত্রে সিকোয়েন্স ত্রুটি দেখা দিলেও, সেটা যে মূল লেখকের ত্রুটি তা বলার অপেক্ষা রাখে না৷ তবে পুরো বই ছিল সুখপাঠ্য, মূল লেখকের লেখার ধাঁচ প্রায় অক্ষত রেখে কাজটা সম্পূর্ণ করেছেন অনুবাদক।
● সম্পাদনা ও বানান—
সম্পাদনা ঘাটতি ও বানান বিভ্রাটের কমতি নেই। এই নিয়ে অনেকে অনেক আলোচনা করেছে। তাই স্কিপ করে গেলাম। বই ভালো লেগেছে এইটাই বড়ো কথা।

I love discovering new talent, especially in the genres I love to read. "Black Rain" is the first published book by Graham Brown and is written as an adventure/thriller novel with elements of science fiction and horror.
Right off the bat I'll say this is one very good book. It reads like an Indiana Jones adventure but in the present day and with some good solid speculative science weaved into the plot. If you are familiar with novels by James Rollins or Mathew Reilly then you'll have a good idea of the style...sort of like reading a movie. In a nutshell, the novel is about a covert government agency that is launched on a quest to find an ancient Mayan temple in the heart of the Amazon. But what they find there is a huge mystery and more action/adventure than I've read in a long time.
The scenes and characters are presented clearly, so clearly that you can "see" the movie unfolding in your mind. And the plot is heavy on the action, especially the second half. The first half builds up the mystery of just what is going on here, establishes the main characters and allows us to see what is motivating the competing groups looking for the temple. Intrigue abounds and it really keeps you turning the pages. And the second half just explodes with action. Very well done.
I was so impressed by this novel that I've added the name Graham Brown to my "Best Little-Known Authors" list on my blog. I daresay he won't be unknown for long as my copy of the book says he is working on a sequel to "Black Rain" and I can't wait to read it. If his work is marketed well, he could be the next "big thing" in this genre.

When I first saw the title of this book I thought it would be about the chemical warfare used by the Russians against the Kurds in Afganistan. Much to my surprise when I started reading the book it was about the ancient Mayan superstitions and culture. A group goes into the Amazon to find a new technological breakthrough in power supply. The trials they had to deal with as in most thriller novels are great but the good guys (heros) overcome the obsticles in due course. They did this by coming up with innovations in self defense.
In rating the book I felt that the author created novel uses of standard military hardware against attack by gorilla forces. It was a very good read.

I won this book. This book was great! I had a hard time putting it down, very suspensful. I can't wait for the sequel. If you like thrillers combined with some history, then you will love this book.

People - actual, named people - claim for this to be a "smart" and "intelligent" book. Dudes, what?! I grant you, this edges out the standard James Rollins drivel, but there's pigeons smarter than a James Rollins novel. The ex-machina plot twists, the lazy crazy science - and the effing Mayan Calendar to make the novel irrelevant a mere two years after publication, too - in the end I was powering through it on a hate read, really. The larvae need acidic environment - too bad the human bodies are rather alkaline, but who'd care about that? Thanks, Mr. Brown, I'd be steering clear of your efforts from now on. Go "reek havoc" somewhere else (yeah, the proofreading here did a hilarious non-job).

I received this book on a goodreads giveaway. I set about reading it as soon as I could, so that I could review it. I am so glad that I received this book, one reason is because it sounded so good and I know that my husband will enjoy it too. The title tells the tale this book is a thriller.
It is about Danielle Laidlaw an operative for a CIA type organization called the NRI. Danielle is in Brazil with her partner and mentor Arnold Moore until he is called away by their employer. At which point she is left to run the assignment on her own. She is there to find a mysterious power source that could change how we use energy. Danielle builds her crew starting with a ex-CIA helicopter pilot named Hawker. Hawker proves to be an invaluable member of her crew. She also recruits a linguist, a professor, an assistant for him, porters, and some guards. I am sure I missed some characters that were minor so that is why.
After a crazy situation with a ships crew that Arnold Moore had set up, and Danielle was lucky enough to have Hawker with her to help her. Soon they were on the Amazon with a new group of characters added to the mix including Verhoven who also is an invaluable member to the crew. As they travel the Amazon and in the jungle the story unfolds and Danielle wasn't completely honest with her crew. There are hostile natives who want the "black plague" out of their jungle. They have all of the modern things like gps and computers. It all escalates to a fevered pitch.
All I can say is read it, read it, read it. I want to go on but I do not want to put spoilers in there I want you to read it. It is supposed to come out on January, 2010, get it and read it. I look very forward to the sequel, I will be reading it.

Danielle Laidlaw leads an expedition into the Amazon rainforest. She is part of a government entity working under the radar and does not disclose to the civilians traveling with her the true purpose of her mission. The guise is that they are searching for a legendary Mayan city. The truth is that they are looking for a new power source, a crystal which can be used for cold fusion power. The book starts out slow as the trip is discussed, all characters described and devious plans fleshed out, at least some of them. Legends and myths follow them along the way and real life assassins are on their trail to stop Danielle from succeeding. This book is part thriller, part horror as unseen beasts make their presence known as night falls. The “thriller” part had me hooked but the author swerves into the weary plot of the government and/or greedy humans are causing havoc, raping the earth of natural resources, polluting the earth, yada yada. He could have left it as aliens and I would have been happy. But it was still worth the read and speeded along once the characters reached the rain forest.

I was excited to receive and read this book, it seemed there was a lot of positive "vibe" about it. I admit it, I like mythology books, set in the deep jungle where you are alone, cut off from any assistance from the outside world.
I think the author had a great idea, and the concept was in fact interesting, there were several moving parts to the story, and one would move between the mainly political intrigue in the US to the real action on the ground in the jungle.
I found the pacing to be uneven a bit, and, while I am the first to suspend belief for a good story, parts of the story pushed the envelope even for me.
All of that said, if you are looking for a nice travel read, or a book to sit by the beach as summer winds down, this packs plenty of action to keep you entertained and a story that will keep you engaged to the final page.

This is the first book I read by Graham Brown, but have read his collaborations with Clive Cussler which I really enjoy, so I started to read this in anticipation. It is a well written and researched book based on Mayen myths, conspiracies, covert government agencies. Set in the Amazon with opposing teams looking for a mythical object that could change the world, loads of action with some interesting if far fetched ideas. I enjoyed this story although it was slow going in places, would I read the follow up ... Yes I would

There was a whole lot I liked about this book. Great pace, great characters, great setting. I liked most of your book enough to give it five stars. Except for one thing. I thought this was a regular techno thriller, along the lines of James Rollins, and in a lot of ways it is, until you get to the sci fi. I didn't sign up for that. I signed up for cool historical mysteries and bad guy assassins. Not time travel. Ugh. It reminds me a lot of The Atlantis Gene, which was 80% historical and then filled with aliens. If this had a better explanation than time travel, I'd have given it five stars.

Monsters, Ancient Civilizations, And More
This was quite a story. It revolves around Danielle Laidlaw, from a little known government entity, NRI, and an ex-CIA mercenary, Hawker. They are going with a small group deep into the Amazon rain Forest in Brazil to explore a Mayan mystery and perhaps make a discovery that will shock the world. It has everything a modern techno-thriller needs, including monster bugs, spies, corporate politics, and archeological intrigue. The characterization is developed very well as Danielle and Hawker go from being wary of each other to partners capable of working well together. It was a bit complicated and maybe could have done without a fellow traveler/ college professor's lectures on the Mayan people and culture. The giant bugs helped to turn the book into a part monster movie a la Jurassic Park. Exciting and fun for those of us who like that sort of thing. No romance, no car chases, but plenty of gun fights, albeit against monsters. Lots of fun, actually.... would make a good movie.

Susan T's review of this just a few short days ago had me scrambling for my Kindle to download it immediately! A society that is the source of the Mayan story, an isolated Amazonian tribe notorious for their blood-lust, and the rumors of cold fusion to solve the world's energy crisis - these three seemingly unrelated plots were brilliantly woven together as Danielle Laidlaw, field agent for a covert government agency, leads a team of civilians and ex-pats deep into the Amazon to unravel all three mysteries. However, her intentions aren't what they seem and danger soon catches up to them as they are tracked by humans and mysterious animals, contact with either results in a vicious death.
I couldn't get enough of the Mayan history that was the basis of this story - I love anthropology, religion, and science and felt like a kid in a candy shop with every page I turned! While Brown took liberal rights with Mayan stories, the basis of them were grounded in fact, which I feel always makes a story better for me...and sends me searching the internet for the real stories to compare the fiction too. I really liked the characters and, while I didn't connect to every single one of them, I did connect to most of the main ones - especially Dr. McCarter who was enough of a nerd to have me smiling every time he opened his mouth to share a new and exciting fact with his comrades. Less than impressive was Brown's lack of vivid descriptions of the physical surroundings. He talked about temples and alters but I had trouble picturing them from his descriptions. I also felt like the story repeated itself over and over, with a new nugget of information being revealed at the end of each lap - minor conflict, full-fledged fight, people injured, regrouping, epiphany, repeat.
Despite a little bit of redundancy in the middle (which the great plot kept me plodding through) this book was a surprise hit from a debut novelist! Several twists and turns and a nice little contemporary tie-in at the end has me awaiting Graham Brown's sophomore publication :)

Der Klappentext klang vielversprechend: Eine mehr oder weniger geheime Einheit der US-Regierung macht sich im brasilianischen Regenwald auf die Suche nach einer neuen Energiequelle, die uns von Kernkraft, Öl und Co. unabhängig macht. Ich erwartete einen rasanten Thriller und Abenteuer im Regenwald.
Abenteuer gab es wirklich, aber mit der Zeit entwickelte sich das Buch in eine Richtung, die mir nicht so ganz gefallen hat.
Was nämlich am Anfang noch nach einer ganz normalen, zwar schwierigen Expedition ähnelt, entwickelt sich immer mehr zum SciFi-Abenteuer mit unbekannten, tödlichen Tieren und so weiter (mehr kann ich nicht verraten, ohne zu spoilern). Verstrickt wird das Ganze dann noch mit dem Mythos der Maya, was mir eigentlich ganz gut gefallen hat, mit der Zeit aber einfach zu ausgeschlachtet wurde.
Das Buch ist sehr brutal: Es sterben sehr viele Menschen, aber natürlich entweder nur die Bösen oder namenlose Randfiguren. Die Brutalität und das gegenseitige Töten ist nichts so meins - noch mehr hat mich dann aber doch gestört, dass die Hauptfiguren zwar mehr oder weniger immer der größten Gefahr ausgesetzt waren, am Ende aber nie mehr als einen Kratzer davon trugen. Das machte das Ganze sehr unglaubwürdig.
Die Sprache des Buches ist sehr flüssig und es lässt sich gut lesen. Allerdings ist sie auch sehr emotionslos, was vor allem in den Kampfpassagen zum Tragen kommt. Ansonsten enthält sie viele unbekannte Wörter und Namen, die allesamt mit der Maya-Kultur im Zusammenhang stehen. Diese werden aber immer gut erklärt, sodass es keine Verständnisprobleme gibt.
Gut fand ich, dass hier wirklich die Expedition im Mittelpunkt stand. Auch wenn der Autor noch eine Liebesgeschichte hätte einpflechten können, hat er darauf verzichtet.
Alles in allem war das Buch ganz okay, das Ende dann aber für mich definitiv zu abgehoben. Der Verlag sollte wirklich überdenken, wie das Buch beworben wird, denn ein Thriller ist es meiner Meinung nach nicht. Wer sich aber für die Maya interessiert, sollte sich das Buch schnappen!

Was nämlich am Anfang noch nach einer ganz normalen, zwar schwierigen Expedition ähnelt, entwickelt sich immer mehr zum SciFi-Abenteuer mit unbekannten, tödlichen Tieren und so weiter (mehr kann ich nicht verraten, ohne zu spoilern). Verstrickt wird das Ganze dann noch mit dem Mythos der Maya, was mir eigentlich ganz gut gefallen hat, mit der Zeit aber einfach zu ausgeschlachtet wurde.
Das Buch ist sehr brutal: Es sterben sehr viele Menschen, aber natürlich entweder nur die Bösen oder namenlose Randfiguren. Die Brutalität und das gegenseitige Töten ist nichts so meins - noch mehr hat mich dann aber doch gestört, dass die Hauptfiguren zwar mehr oder weniger immer der größten Gefahr ausgesetzt waren, am Ende aber nie mehr als einen Kratzer davon trugen. Das machte das Ganze sehr unglaubwürdig.
Die Sprache des Buches ist sehr flüssig und es lässt sich gut lesen. Allerdings ist sie auch sehr emotionslos, was vor allem in den Kampfpassagen zum Tragen kommt. Ansonsten enthält sie viele unbekannte Wörter und Namen, die allesamt mit der Maya-Kultur im Zusammenhang stehen. Diese werden aber immer gut erklärt, sodass es keine Verständnisprobleme gibt.
Gut fand ich, dass hier wirklich die Expedition im Mittelpunkt stand. Auch wenn der Autor noch eine Liebesgeschichte hätte einpflechten können, hat er darauf verzichtet.
Alles in allem war das Buch ganz okay, das Ende dann aber für mich definitiv zu abgehoben. Der Verlag sollte wirklich überdenken, wie das Buch beworben wird, denn ein Thriller ist es meiner Meinung nach nicht. Wer sich aber für die Maya interessiert, sollte sich das Buch schnappen!

This is a pretty good thriller, with some supernatural and scientific elements thrown in. I was surprised, because I was a bit disconcerted by the whole government-agency-in-Brazil-looking-for-Mayan-ruins angle. At the start, it was sounding like a plot from the Dan Brown random plot generator. Major religion: Mayan; location: Brazil; protagonist: beautiful, athletic, go-getter agent; number of competing groups: 3; etc, etc. As the story went on, though, Graham Brown threw in some neat "scientific" twists and a few potential supernatural elements. The action was pretty quick paced but wasn't totally unrelenting. I was amused that as characters were killed off (which they almost have to be in a thriller), they were killed off in unique ways. Highly entertaining! I wouldn't be surprised if this gets turned into a movie.
