SEt in Venice, this seemed to be the right thing to read while there. Alas, it is very much a ponderous piece of writing. Lots of turgid philosophical discussions - particularly contrasting the Venetian style of government to the nascent US - interrupting a plot very much of its time. I don't regret reading it, but it is a read for those who are already confirmed James Fenimore Cooper fans, rather than a pleasant surprising discovery.

A gripping tale, and a masterful dissection of a highly secretive and authoritarian society.
