মায়ান ও অ্যাজটেকদের মিথ নিয়ে ছোট ছোট গল্প। কিভাবে পৃথিবী সৃষ্টি হয়েছিলো, কিভাবে মানুষ এলো, সূর্য আর চাঁদের জন্ম, সেই সাথে তাদের বীরদের বীরত্ব গাঁথা। শুরুতে একটা ম্যাপ আছে। আছে সংক্ষেপে দুই জাতির ইতিহাস আর প্রতি গল্পে সুন্দর ছবি।

ভালোই।

I thought I was picking up a story book of the Mayan and Aztec people. What I got was awkward cultural commentaries, weird post reading questions, and very little in way of myths. Disappointing.

মাইকেল শুমান এর লেখা, “মায়ান ও অ্যাজটেক মিথোলজি” । মায়ান ও অ্যাজটেকদের এবং তাদের নিয়ে প্রচলিত মিথোলজির ওপরে সুন্দর সুন্দর ছবি আঁকা আছে । এই বইটিরও শুরুতে একটি মানচিত্র আছে যা মায়ান এবং অ্যাজটেকদের বাসস্থানগুলো নির্দেশ করে ।
মায়ানরা জাতি হিসেবে বেশ উন্নত ছিল । নিজস্ব হায়ারোগ্লিফিক লিপি, প্রশাসন ব্যবস্থা, নগর পরিকল্পনা - ইত্যাদি নানাদিকে তারা সিদ্ধহস্ত ছিল । দুই রকমের ক্যালেন্ডার ব্যবহার, জ্যোতির্বিদ্যা, নানান রকম চাষবাষ, উত্তেজনাকর খেলাধুলা - সবকিছুতেই তাদের দৃপ্ত বিচরণ ছিল । খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব আঠারোশো সাল থেকে মায়ানরা উত্তর গুয়াতেমালা এবং বেলিয থেকে ক্রমে ইউকাটান পেপিনসুলায় নিজেদের আবাস গড়ে তোলে । কিন্ত ১৫০০ সালে স্প্যানিশ আগ্রাসনের পরে প্রায় একশো আশি বছর ধরে যুদ্ধ করার পরে ষোলোশো সাতানব্বই সালে এরা ধীরে ধীরে বিলুপ্ত হয়ে যায় ।
অ্যাজটেকরা মূলত মধ্য মেক্সিকোর টোলটেক নামক যোদ্ধা জাতির অংশ ছিলো । এরা মেক্সিকো জুড়ে বিশাল সাম্রাজ্য জিতে নেওয়ার পরে রাস্তাঘাট, বাড়িঘর, জলজ যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থা - ইত্যাদির অনেক উন্নতি সাধন করে । এছাড়াও উপাসনার জন্যে বড় বড় মন্দিরও ছিল সেখানে । মায়ান এবং অ্যাজটেক - দুই সম্প্রদায়েই নরবলির চল ছিল ।
মোট আটটি মিথোলজিকাল গল্প, প্রথমটি মায়ান জাতির বিশ্বাস অনুযায়ী কিভাবে মানুষের জন্ম হলো - এই বিষয়ে । শুধু মানুষ নয়, অন্যান্য কিছু পশুপাখির উদ্ভব কিভাবে হয়েছে বলে তারা বিশ্বাস করতো সেই সম্পর্কেও মজার মজার গল্প আছে । এক ম্যাকাও পাখি এবং তারা ছেলেরা পৃথিবীতে দম্ভের রাজত্ব করতো । সেখান থেকে দুই যমজ ভাই হুনাহুপু আর শবালাংক কিভাবে পৃথিবীকে তাদের হাত থেকে রক্ষা করে, এবং কিভাবে পৃথিবীতে ভূমিকম্প এবং পাহাড়ের পাথরের উদ্ভব হয়েছে - সেসব নিয়ে আছে মনোমুগ্ধকর কাহিনি । দুই ভাইয়ের বীরত্বগাথা এবং চন্দ্র সূর্যের উদ্ভব নিয়েও আছে চমৎকার সব মিথের গল্প ।
এরপরে আসে অ্যাজটেকদের মিথ গল্প পৃথিবীর সৃষ্টি । এইসব গল্প পড়লেই আসলেই অবাক হতে হয় এইসব ভেবে যে তখনকার দিনের মানুষদের কল্পনাশক্তি কতোটা অন্যরকম ছিলো । রুপকথার গল্পকে হার মানিয়ে দেয় তাদের মিথোলজিকাল গল্পগুলো । অ্যাজটেকদের গল্পে তাদের সভ্যতার উত্থান, খাদ্যভ্যাস, সংগীতচর্চা - ইত্যাদি নিয়েও মিথ প্রচলিত ছিল । দৈনন্দিন জীবনের সাথে মিশে ছিল তাদের মিথগুলো ।
সন্ধ্যা বেলা গরম এক কাপ কফি খেতে খেতে পড়ে ফেললাম বইটা । মিথোলজিকাল নানান রকম বই আছে আদী প্রকাশনের । বাকি যা সংগ্রহে আছে আশা করি দ্রুতই পড়ে ফেলবো । মিথোলজিগুলো আনন্দ দেওয়ার সাথে সাথে সভ্যতা নিয়েও নানান রকম তথ্য দিয়ে আমাদের পাঠকমনকে তৃপ্ত করে !!

This book teaches us about the Mayan and Aztec people. It tells us what kind of gods they worshiped and what they were eating, and other stuff we should all know about. This book tells us about how everyone was made and started. Like how the sun and the moon were made. I learned a lot from reading this book and I enjoyed it. I usually don't like Myth books, but this one was very entertaining to read. The pictures are funny and interesting, and it made it easy to read. I think that everyone should read this book Mayan and Aztec mythology.

Nice little text. Updated version of Schuman's earlier book, Mayan and Aztec Mythology.

While both are nicely organized summaries of modern understanding of these cultures, reading these books today, with the many references to more detailed works, none, it looks, by descendants of the people in question, really makes me think about calls to decolonize history (among other fields).

I used this as a quick reference for Mayan and Aztec mythology. It wasn't very detailed and it was a quick read. I wouldn't use this as a solid reference for a paper, but it's nice to have for a basic understanding of the creation myths.

Aztec and Maya religions share several traits dualism belief in a word balanced between the force of good and evil.thought the Aztec and Maya gave their gods different names their deities served similar functions. Aztec and my practiced human sacrifice both societies used calendars and a numbering system based on 20. The hieroglyphic text recorded important event religious beliefs and other aspects of and culture, this book teaches us so many things about Mayan and Aztec. I think everyone should read this book, especially those who are doing Maya and yet in school.

A nice little text, really a story textbook. Each (short) chapter has an introduction, review questions and answers, and "expert commentary."

With a 2001 copyright date, it has, in addition to endnotes, glossary, index, and bibliography, a short list of related websites.

It's a nice little introduction for someone who wants more than a picture book.
