While Schaum's Outline of College Physics by Frederick J. Bueche and Eugene Hecht didn't help me learn physics, it played a critical role in maintaining my subject knowledge. The mistake many people make is using it as a textbook since the book does not go into nearly enough depth to be a standalone guide to physics. However, the book is helpful as a complement to a good physics textbook or as a way to retain information once a course is completed. I occasionally read parts of the book to refresh my memory from the physics course I took a year earlier.

The book covers algebra-based introductory physics, the first physics course in college. Not only is this book helpful while you're taking the course, but it also is a great way to quickly refresh yourself on certain subjects when you're taking a higher-level course. This is true for a few reasons.

First, it has a highly detailed table of contents. While this may seem inconsequential, the table of contents is the key to quickly accessing information, and the more accessible info is, the more likely you are to use the book. For example, if you wanted to find the energy stored in a certain capacitor, you look to the electromagnetics part of the contents, look at chapter 25, which is "electric potential; capacitance," and under that, you will see "energy stored in a capacitor." So now you know exactly where to look rather than searching in the actual content.

The second is the short explanations and diagrams. This book values your time. Each topic is a boldface title followed by an explanation of only 2 or 3 sentences. This is then followed by a formula or a diagram if applicable. This is far better than the droning explanation of most physics books, making it very good for reviewing.

Schaum's Outline usually makes great review books, and this college physics is no exception. I bought this book expecting a clear and concise review book that does its job, and that's what I received. The book is perfect for anyone taking introductory physics or has already taken but doesn't want to forget what they learned.

I love this book. It makes physics become easier for me to study. However, I give it only 4 stars b/c the problems are only in easy and medium level.
