An excellent way of acquiring vocabulary. 5,000 words is more than good enough for fluent reading of newspapers and non-fiction (in fact 3,000 - 4,000 words is). The method here of compiling the words is very interesting, although there is no perfect way of knowing what the 5,000 most common words are. Here they take a 20 million word corpus evenly divided between fiction, spoken and non-fiction texts from both Spain and Latin America. Best frequency dictionary I've ever found, bar none. Has a Spanish phrase and English translation for each word. Has an alphabetical list in addition to the main frequency list. I went through it to fill in any patches I may have in my vocabulary, and they seem to have used a reasonably well-rounded corpus. Excellent book.
