Friendship: Launch Day

Rate this book
Spend the day with Adventure Girl Kat Auton. History is being made today with the launch of the Friendship, the most advanced ship ever seen in human space. It will be crewed by chethari, quarians and humans from across the League and Allianzi, and will soon be heading out on its first missions. Kat, the youngest member of the Friendship's media team, is reporting on the build up to the big event; front stage, back stage, all the atmosphere as it happens. But it is going to be a much bigger day than even Kat is expecting.

I am a primary school teacher living in Cardiff, Wales, UK. I live in a tiny house full of books, animals, rocks and fossils.

I love travelling by myself because you get to meet more local people that way. My favourite trips so far have been ice fishing in the arctic circle, the Canadian Rockies in winter and camping with my sister in Devon (Every bit as adventurous!)

I have been writing stories since I was a kid but have only recently taken the plunge into publishing. I've also recently started a science fiction review site http://www.starshipsandaliens.com which is nearly as much fun as writing.

This was a very interesting book, and not my usual read. I love futuristic type of books, but I do prefer plot-driven books much more then character driven books, which is what this book is.

That being said, the book does grab you from the very first page. I actually wrote something along the lines of "you could actually taste the excitement in the air" after reading the first chapter. But, after a few chapters... I got a little bored. The book is well written, and I did enjoy the main character, Kat, but there are so many new worlds, civilizations, and ideas introduced in the book, in a short time period, that I felt myself more confused by it all then entertained... which led to me being bored. There are some exciting moments, but like I said, I felt more confused then anything.

That being said, there were sections that I did greatly enjoy - not going to share & spoil - and the ending was great, and it was worth reading. I can't say I was terribly surprised by the ending - but I think I would have been disappointed if the ending was different.

I received a review copy from the author.

Kat Auton is a 19 year old journalist reporting from the world of Defrica. Defrica is also known as the Lost World because it has only recently been discovered, hidden deep in the Carotis Nebula. Both humanity's major powers, the League and Allianzi, have established aid missions there. Seeing them working together there and building strong relationships has brought other species to Defrica too; the genetically adapted quarians and the highly advanced chethari.

The story follows Kat as she is broadcasting live on the launch of the Friendship. The Friendship is a hyperlight pod, the biggest and most advanced ship in human space. It has been built by humans, chethari and quarians working together, creating a ship which will take the mission's expertise out to help other worlds. Kat's broadcast starts from the base of the mysterious Fourth. She is broadcasting for a local station and only expecting a small share of the audience, but soon finds herself in the middle of controversy. There is speculation that there may be a third alien species coming to the launch, though their existence is still being officially denied by authorities. Kat also has to contend with the news networks as she tries to convince them that she is not a secret agent working for the Fourth, while having fun winding up the richest man in the known galaxy.

This is a character driven, entertaining story - not for fans of high octane action, it is an adventure of exploration and discovery, a behind the scenes view of a day which will make history.

Kat is a very upbeat, practical person, with a very interesting view on journalism. A good deal about her is revealed over the course of the book, helping develop her character in ways the twelve hours the book takes place in wouldn't normally allow.

Overall, the story itself is fairly decent, and the interactions are interesting. However, I feel that it moves a bit too slowly at times...

Enjoyable romp

This approach to a event is by far very enjoyable. The different approaches to news reporting are well written. Kat represents the rare ability to draw ones viewers into the story or report. This down home feeling, along with her willingness to have the needed certification or training to do the story is a win win situation for her. This make's this story very enjoyable to read.
