Recommends it for: someone looking for a heroine with actual problems, not just angst.
My Take:

Though it only ended up with three, I considered giving this book four stars for several reasons. First, it deals with abuse, manipulation, and infidelity- not your usual romance novel light fare. The story has an actual conflict and some suspense, rather than a contrived situation just meant to get our heroes together. Audrey, despite her early mistakes in life, is able to redeem herself. She managed to kick-ass, saving herself and her son, while remaining realistic and with minimal lap

I knew soon after starting reading this book that I had read it before, but somehow I didn't record it here. I was an excellent and totally engrossing read again. Good plot, logical presentation, deep characters, smooth and skilled writing style. I seldom rate a book 5-star unless it is of literary or philosophical value in addition to being a good read. This one is an exception.

not a bad read but telegraphs the ending way too early

I ended up skipping at least a third of the book . I usually like Inglath Cooper but this was just too obvious.

There isn't much romance in the story. I didn't feel the connection between the two main characters. However, I did like the overall message of the story. This is mostly about a woman who is trying to come to terms with the decisions she's made in the past and her attempt to leave an abusive marriage.

Audrey is being abused by her husband Jonathan; she does whatever she can to protect her son Sammy from his father but it’s not enough. She finally has a plan that may get them both away from his abuse but Nicholas comes along. Nicholas has spent his life trying to defend the innocent and abused. Now he wants to help Audrey, but will it put her and her son in more danger than ever before?

So far I'm not finished yet but it's a very sad book and very good at the same time I just don't understand why such a pretty girl can get beaten so much by such a cruel guy.

Virginia author Inglath Cooper fell in love with reading as a little girl, devouring most of the books in her elementary school library. At some point, she decided she wanted to pursue a writing career, creating romance fiction that did for others what her favorite books have done for her. “I love character-driven books that leave me feeling as if I’ve really known these people and make me wish I ...more
