What would you do if the love of your life lost their chance at a heart transplant because the donor organ went to a convicted felon? Grieve and let go--or wait until the convict is released and then hunt him down and make him pay?
Lalla Bains certainly doesn't need any more distractions during the simmering summers in the San Joaquin Valley of California; her tight-wad, w

This was a funny, well-constructed little mystery that I enjoyed though sometimes I groaned at some of the stunts Lalla pulled, and got frustrated with the way she treated Caleb. Her hot and cold treatment of him and his acceptance of her behavior just did not always sit well with me. But, as the book progressed and more is divulged about her upbringing, it becomes easier to understand why she is burdened with some of the issues she has.

I loved the voice of this story – engaging, breezy and not

A murder mystery with just enough red herring to keep even the most avid amateur sluth on their toes. I enjoyed this book, second in the series, and look forward to reading the third book.

I have rated this book four stars.

I obtained this book from Amazon in Kindle format.

I received this book to review from the World Literary Cafe (WLC). I requested it with the hope that it will be a quick read, and indeed it was.

I noticed that the writing needs some mild editing, as in, there are words repeated twice like "this this", and it wasn't a single case scenario.

The story was entertaining and engaged my attention almost the entire time. It had a nice mystery that wound through the pages. There was also a sweet romance which at times felt a little forced.

When she finds Billy Wayne Dobson dead outside of Mr. Kim's Chinese restaurant, Lalla Bains' life begins a strange and dangerous side trip. A former model turned crop duster, she takes what life throws at her in stride if not always gracefully.

The characters in this book are strongly defined and very, very memorable. Lalla makes tough decisions, sometimes risking the goodwill of important people in her life, but she does what she feels is the right thing to do and garners full respect for her c

Her impatience and impetuous nature continue to get Lalla Bains into deep trouble when the police investigate her propensity to be too close to the scene of the crime. A fast, fun read.

A Dead Red Heart
By R. P. Dahlke
I’m a sucker for places I’ve never been and I’m overjoyed when I come across a setting/location that puts me there as R. P. Dahlke does with Modesto, Calif.
Also I love a kick-butt heroine with a sense of humor and a good heart. Lalla Bains is all that and more. A former model turned crop-duster pilot (sounds weird, but good writing and plotting makes it plausible) Sheriff Caleb Stone is her long-time boyfriend. Their interactions are funny, aggravating or heart-re

A Dead Red Heart by RP Dahlke

***** of *****
What an absolutely delightful novel this was. A Dead Red Heart is one of the books about the adventures of Eula Mae Bains, known to her family and friends as Lalla. A towering goddess of a woman, the former high profile model is now forty (oh dear Lord- forty!) and has settled in back home in Modesto, CA,  running her father's crop dusting business and working as one of the pilots. As the story opens, Lalla is in an alley, getting ready to give forme

A homeless man dies at Lalla's feet in an alley after he's been warned to stop leaving cut out snowflakes/love letters attached to her car.

The man's mother points her finger at Lalla as the murderess. The dead man's aunt wants to talk to Lalla but goes missing. And a newsman whose body is found in the trunk of Lalla's Cadillac is linked to all of them. Is anything what it seems?

I like this series and the author has a wonderful story telling ability. This novel was fast moving and although lots o

Lalla Bains, a forty-year-old, twice divorced, ex-model, has been the unwilling recipient of attention and love letters from Billy Wayne. The day after he covers her car with poems on paper snowflakes, he is stabbed to death. With his final breath he tells her, “The more there is the less you see.” Even though he exasperated her, she thinks his death deserves more investigation than it is receiving. So she begins her own investigation even while working with the problems of the aero-ag business ...more

Lalla Bains is an ex-model and Aero Ag pilot and a wonderful character that I am looking forward to getting to know better. After giving up her modeling career as well as giving up a couple of husbands, Lalla is back in Modesto, California.

Lalla's father is in bad health and so is his crop dusting business. Crop dusting does not sound like a very complicated business but I soon found out that it is a very complicated business particularly when someone is sabotaging your company.

Lalla Bains is an ex-model who has moved back home to Modesto, California to run her father's crop dusting business and trouble seems to follow her every move. She is a very strong willed, self-sufficient, head strong and curious woman. It is her curiosity and sense of justice that ultimately involve her in a murder investigation where she is a suspect.

A Dead Red Heart is written from the point of view of the main character Lalla. R.P. Dahlke takes us on a roller-coaster ride of emotions, action

Lalla Bains is still working for her father as a crop duster and her main worry is a homeless veteran, Billy Wayne, who showered her loved red Cadillac with paper snowflakes. When Lalla tries to talk Billy into his senses, she finds him just in time to listen to his final words: "The more there is, the less you see". Armed with that strange clue and a couple of snooping friends, Lalla tries to find Billy's murderer while trying to ignore a special proposal from Sheriff Caleb - her boyfriend.

Second in a series, R.P. Dahlke’s Dead Red Heart stars 40-year-old crop duster and amateur sleuth Lalla Bains as she unravels the mysteries of her heart and of her erstwhile stalker’s death. Maybe she’s a suspect. And maybe old school friends are trying to scare her off from learning something else. But Lalla Bains doesn’t react well to threats of any kind—not even threats of marriage.

The Modesto California scene is convincingly described—I can feel the warmth, hear the airplane overhead, smell

Lalla Bains, Crop Duster and Amateur Sleuth has become one of my favorite characters. In A Dead Red Heart, the second book in the Lalla Bains Mystery Series, R.P. Dahlke weaves together suspense, mystery, romance, and a touch of humor for a fanstastic mystery that will keep you guessing until the end.

Billy Wayne Dobson is obsessed with Lalla and has been warned by Lalla's boyfriend, Sheriff Caleb Stone, to stop harassing her. Lalla soon finds herself standing in a parking lot staring at her re

Lalla Bains, a crop-dusting pilot, has a love-sick stalker, Billy. But after Billy showers paper snowflakes over her beloved Cadillac, Lalla thinks enough is enough. She had only thought to firmly warn off her love-sick would-be swain, but someone else had it in for Billy. Intent on confrontation, Lalla finds Billy dying in a back alley, a pair of scissors sticking out of his chest.

Meanwhile, her father’s love life is proving trying. The skinflint is squiring La

This is the 2nd in the author's Lalla Bains series, and I enjoyed it more than I did the 1st. The plot line still gallops along with Lalla's propensity to find herself surrounded by trouble, and I am still reminded of Cybil Shepherd's character from the old TV series Moonlighting: beautiful, sassy, impetuous, emotional, charming when she wants to be but sometimes caustic and not willing to take crap off anybody. Caleb is not quite the wisecracking sidekick that Bruce Willis was, but if you add i ...more

In RP Dahlke’s “Red Dead Heart” her heroine, Lalla Bains, comes upon a homeless man as he lay dying. This isn’t just any guy, tho, it’s a guy who had the hots for her, wrote poetry and pasted a blizzard of paper snowflakes to her vintage candy-apple red Cadillac. Lalla is still bending over the bleeding man when the cops show up—and that’s only the beginning of her troubles. In this zany romp of a mystery, RP Dahlke takes us on a wild ride—from a crop duster a thousand feet above the central val ...more

I was happy to be able to access the next Lalla Bain's story and it did not disappoint. Lalla is perplexed to say the least when she comes across the body of a veteran who has been plastering her cadillac with supposedly love notes.

Her now lover, Caleb, a rival and unscrupulous crop dusting company and a slimy detective who is trying to pin the murder on Lalla, and you have a great mix of interesting characters.

This second book in the series expanded the relationship between Lalla and Caleb, referred to some of the original characters and also added additional ones which kept the story line fresh. Although R P Dahlke made references to people and situations from the first book the author gave you enough information in A Dead Red Heart so that it wasn't necessary to have read the first book to enjoy this one. The author did a great job of describing the new characters so you knew how they looked and kne ...more

I have read both this book, and the first in the series, The Dead Red Cadillac. Lalla, the heroine-sleuth of the book is interesting and very brave. But, I also find her inability to maintain relationships rather difficult to follow at times. I enjoyed the mystery, and as in the first book, the characterizations are well done. The mystery was not too easy to solve, and that is what I want in a mystery. If you are interested in a mystery that will keep you occupied and ready to turn pages, then t ...more

Okay this is the second of the Dead Red mysteries. Another winner, a real true to life mystery instead of a super gum shoe! Enjoyable with tall ex-model Lalla Bain, Sheriff Calib and all the usual cast members. A kill it in a day mystery. Spike is a small terror but on the last page justice is served with a two wheeled cart.

Another fun read from R.P. Dahlke. I read the first one A Dead Red Cadillac and thought it was good and the second kept the story going with all the kooky characters. Good cozy mystery

The second in the Lalla Bains series. I enjoyed reading this book. Don't think I'd want to hang with Lalla as she has a habit of stumbling onto dead bodies. Great characters, great plot, easy read.
