Uf…

Boy...pretty bad. The title has little to do with the spirit of the book. The cruise ship on the cover has little to do with the plot after the first half of the book. The characters are flat in a film noir way. The main character, despite being drunk or on cocaine, always has dead-aim accuracy, has the physical stamina to best the other guy, and always slips away to safety. Right. Oh, and the author--from Miami--tosses in a "tobacco barn" located in North Dakota. Is he kidding? Does he think there are pineapple farms and orange groves there, too? Sheesh! I found myself skimming A LOT to get through this one, although I do recognize the technical ability of the author. I just thought his creativity needs work.

Sean Rowe is a friend of mine. Actually, a sometimes frustrating, always fascinating ex-beau.
So i might be biased...but the truth is, this is not only a fast, fun, furious ride, but an excellent read if you like clever turns of the phrase and vivid...everything. Sean thinks of things and says things in ways i'd never think of...charming, witty, funny, weird...it's a fast, fascinating read that won't leave you bored on any page.

Is it high art? Naah. But then, Sean wouldn't have wanted it to be.

An action packed rollicking rollercoaster from start to finish. Action packed page turner that I couldn't wait to get back to every time I put it down. It a hollywood action movie not deep or literary at all but just fun. Its got surprises and twists that you sometimes see coming and others that come out of nowhere. But for mindless, macho, (with the requisite love interest), fast paced entertainment this book can't be beat.

I tried... really, I tried! I was lost from the first sentence! I figured it didnt get any better by page 80, so I set it down.

I was interested when the group got together to discuss the plan of action, but other than that, I just could not follow who was who. People coming into the story with no explaination of who they are, or what the reason behind them being in the story at all. I just did not get it.

A passenger ship carrying illicit drug cartel money to Cuba is hijacked by an ill-assorted group of six. The run-up to the crime is pure noir; the fallout from the crime takes an already good crime novel to a higher level. The characters are complex; the plot follows Jim Thompson's classic rule for crime fiction ("Things are not what they seem"), and the writing is of a high enough level thatI've waited five years for the next book by Sean Rowe.

TITLE/AUTHOR: FEVER by Sean Rowe
RATING: 4.5/B+
GENRE/PUB DATE/# OF PAGES: Thriller, 2005, 263 Pgs
COMMENTS: Matt Shannon is an ex-FBI agent working
security for a cruise line in Miami. He's getting by
barely, when his step brother inspires him to catch the
fever and live on the edge by getting involved in
a scam. Lots of action, suspense & twisted.

Matt owes Jack big time. So when Jack brings him into a job to rob cruise ship of which Matt is the head of security for the line, he reluctantly says yes. The money is drug money being smuggled into Cuba.

I expected more from this book, it started off quick and fun. But somehow I felt it lost its momentum somewhere and I lost interest.

Just finished listening to the full audio version (unabridged) of Fever by Sean Rowe. The concept of hi-jacking a cruise ship should have lead to an exciting thriller, but, it didn't. Frankly long and rather dull with a simple and predictable plotline. Oh well, maybe next book will be more interesting.

Reads at break-neck speed. It's the story of a major heist but also a guy who has nothing to lose, then does, then thinks he doesn't, then does. Anyway, above caring what the outcome of the heist would be, I began to care about the main character. It seems I only have patience for the fast-moving lately, and this book requires very little patience.

After a sluggish start, this ended up grabbing me like a poor man's Elmore Leonard or James Cain. Check it out if you like hard boiled, edgy crime fiction.
