Mommaboy by Michael Mayhem
Reviewed by: Kisha Green

In the novel Mommaboy by Michael Mayhem, readers will read a tale of a young man, Jamal Hopkins, who is your typical young college student who lives a quiet life. He lives alone in the house that he once shared with his now deceased mother who lost the battle with breast cancer. This seemingly quiet man, though content, does want some type of excitement besides the regular. Be careful what you wish for.

Mommaboy by Michael Mayhem is definitely one of the most slept on books I have read thus far! It is the story of Jamal. He lives an average life, nothing too exciting. His mother, Virginia has died, leaving him wondering about the whys of life. All of that changes when he meets Khalif and his life is turned upside down, literally overnight.

It's been a long while since I've read a story (outside of my own) that kept it "real" with urban living. I absolutely loved this book, and felt Michael did a great job keeping the action going (I hated to put it down in the evening). If you're wondering why I gave this book three stars instead of five, it's because the one thing that was wrong with it were the amount of typographical and/or grammatical errors that were impossible to ignore. If Mr. Mayhem could have had this book edited professi ...more

Thanks to Melinda for recommending this book to me. I know very little about ghetto culture and life so I have no idea how accurately the book depicts that kind of living. My sense is that it captures the flavor though there may be exaggerations in the storyline. In any event, this sometimes brutal book gave me quite a roller coaster ride. I like how the author used font style and size to make statements without having to define what he wants to get across, and the short chapters had me speeding ...more

I really enjoyed reading this book as it was not like any other book I read. throughout the book I found myself feeling has for Jamal/Mommaboy as he joined an organization that was supposedly based on loyalty when they had no loyalty for him. ready to read part 2 and see if Pyramid gets what's coming to him.
