Silent Impact

UNEASY ALLIANCE...

Cory Kingston's husband had died in the line of duty, and in her mind, his partner -- and her first love -- Nick Donatelli was responsible. But when her son, Joe, got into trouble with the law and only Nick could get him out, she swallowed her anger and reached for the phone. Then old passions began to burn anew....

Nick knew Cory hated him, but a departmental investigation had cleared him, and it was time to put the past to rest. He gladly took legal responsibility for Joe, hoping to redeem himself in Cory's eyes. But the court's stipulation that he actually live with Cory and Joe floored him. Being so close to Cory was downright dangerous -- because this time, no wedding ring stood between them.

I often find it hard to rate this author's books as she doesn't pull any punches and doesn't make life to sound like a fairtyle. I actually pondered over rating this book for over a week. I am not sure I liked it, but I didn't hate it either. The convoluted storyline in this hella complicated.

The 19 year old heroine fell hard for the hero Nick, twenty years back and gave him her all, but he never seemed to want it. You see the hero grew up in an abusive house-hold and when he found her getting close, started putting up walls. The wise heroine broke-up with him and over time healed with the help of hero's friend Joe who she eventually fell for, and married and made a beautiful life with for 16 years. They were happy and in love and had 3 kids. Nick got friendzone and was the partner (they are cops) and godfather.

But then four years back Joe died and everything changed, with Nick out of their lives forever. You see Nick's footloose fancy-free ways kind of lead to Joe's loss. Nick was drunk and hesitated shooting a teenager and Joe died as a result; something the pregnant heroine couldn't forgive.

Four years on, Nick is still berating himself, he takes chances and pushes himself to the limit unable to forgive himself. He hasn't taken a drink in years and is still living a nightmare, and then he finds his godson on his doorstep and walks back into Cory's life. You see the heroine's son and friends stand accused of beating up an old man and the charges are serious.

The past four years haven't been kind to Cory's kids either. Her eldest son is distant and possibly a bully, her daughter eats her feelings. I didn't like how Cory was towards the hero at first, she was just so cruel even when he was trying to help her.

However, circumstances put Nick into their orbit again, and Cory does her level best to ignore him and the resurrected chemistry between them. These two seemed just so doomed tbh. Then, we also see that her son may not be as innocent as she thought he was. I felt of the two Nick was a better, and changed man who tried to do the best by her and her kids; her actions were more troubling. I just wasn't left with a too happy feeling at the end and wasn't actively rooting for them to get together.
