This is the best guided Bible study I've ever read. Guthrie pointed out parallels and patterns I had never, in my 20+ years of Sunday School, noticed before. Her study took on the quality of a literary analysis, helping me to appreciate how God "wrote" history to have the same kinds of motifs, hints, and themes that I find so engaging in the non-Bible books that I love. The study grew my love for Christ and my understanding of some sections of Scripture I had always found confusing.

I've been invited to the women's bible study at the Kirk of the Hills (the sponsoring church of both of my sons' schools) and this is the book we're using. I'm excited about it, both from a social aspect and a spiritual one. Being a new-ish convert Covenant Theology I'm still amazed at how clearly the Gospel is presented in the Old Testament, tipping my former thoughts of Jesus as God's "Plan B" after Adam's fall into sin on it's head. I don't know how I ever managed to find comfort in a God who ...more

This wasn't my favorite Bible study. The videos are basically her reading the chapter to you. The study wasn't bad, and there were some interesting points made, but some of the ideas seemed to be a bit of a stretch. Maybe just not a good fit for me at this present time in my life. (Our study groups were divided in their feelings as well.)

Excellent Bible study about Genesis and seeing the gospel and Jesus in the OT. Very deep and intellectual, but relevant. This book made me a Nancy Guthrie fan.

The Promised One
Nancy Guthrie

The Promised One provides a fresh look at the book of Genesis, leading women in discovering how its stories, symbols, people, and promises point to Christ. Over ten weeks of study, participants will see Christ as the agent of creation, the offspring who will crush the head of the serpent, the ark of salvation, the source of the righteousness credited to Abraham, the substitutionary sacrifice provided by God, the Savior to whom the

Has anyone else finished the standard women's Bible study feeling...less than satisfied? The DVDs are entertaining, the materials have tasteful feminine "glitz," and there's never an amount of homework that would interfere with our busy schedules. But somehow these studies come up lacking for me. I crave more spiritual depth, meatier doctrine.

The Promised One: Seeing Jesus in Genesis fits the bill. This study of Genesis fleshes out those familiar OT Bible stories with full and solid theology. Y

I loved Guthrie's book, Hearing Jesus Speak into your Sorrow and I've enjoyed listening to interviews and podcasts of her. She is definitely a woman of the Word and has a real, honest walk with Christ.

Unfortunately, I didn't really like this study/book. Some of her comparisons, illustrations and contrasts between the Old Testament and Christ were thought-provoking. But overall, if you've ever thought of the Old Testament pointing to Christ before, she didn't really add anything new to the conve

An in-depth Bible study that includes personal Bible study, a teaching chapter (to be completed ONLY after working through the text on your own) and a group discussion portion. It is quite a bit of work, sometimes several chapters per week, and Guthrie is apparently a HUGE fan of filling in charts. I learned a lot and it was really interesting to see the connections between Genesis and Jesus, but sometimes it seemed like her points were made via speculation and were a bit of a stretch. HIGHLY recommend! If you have ever studied the Book of Genesis - it's time to study it again. You will gain a new insight into the foreshadowing of Jesus throughout every story / group of people from the beginning through their sojourn into Egypt. Our Bible study group, Women Journeying Through the Bible, has been amazed and blessed by what has been revealed. We used the accompanying DVD which reinforced the reading within this book and the Bible. The homework really stretched our minds and hear ...more

I loved this book that took me through Old Testament stories and, through them, showed me Jesus' existence before the world was even created. I read this book with a group of women in my church and was blessed with rich conversations about the formation of the Earth, the horrific suffering of the wicked who died in the flood, the reason for Joseph's coat of many colors, to Jesus coming from the line of Judah. I saw the Old Testament through Nancy Guthrie's lens and was moved at how much God love ...more

Homework did not take too long, 20-30 min/day 5 days/week, and some excellent insights were gained into the connections between Genesis stories and the Gospel. Teaching chapters are very rich. This is the first in a four-part series by Guthrie and I would be interested in continuing with the other books.

I loved her commentary and her points were amazing; the questions were also very thought-provoking, but at times I found it very repetitive and dry. However, I did learn a lot and appreciated this study.

Nancy Guthrie is one of my favorite authors. She has an extraordinary ability to bring out the shadows of Christ in the Old Testament. This book helped me to love Christ more as I see more of Him in the Old Testament. This book is also great for small groups or Bible studies.

My absolute favorite part was the charts for you to compare what happened in the OT with something related to Christ in the NT. Take your time.
The chapter on Joseph was incredible.
