A wonderful historical depiction of life in a 12th century castle as through the eyes of a young girl for older elementary/middle school readers. The King's army has surrounded the Earl's castle to overtake it and his faithful subjects are cut off from food, water and information. How long can they survive until the Earl's army arrives? Maud, the narrator, shows us the concerns, weaknesses and quiet heroism of his people.
