Andy Riley is a cartoonist and scriptwriter from Britain. He drew a weekly strip cartoon for The Observer Magazine called Roasted, which is also collected in hardback edition. So far his books have sold around one and a half million copies and have been published in eighteen countries, producing calendar, greetings card and poster spin-offs. Lucky Heather is his self-published mini-comic. His comedy scriptwriting is done in partnership with Kevin Cecil. They have won two BAFTAS, for the sitcom Black Books in 2005 and the animated special Robbie The Reindeer in 2000. They created and wrote the sitcoms The Great Outdoors and Hyperdrive for the BBC, and Slacker Cats for the ABC Family Channel. Other television writing credits include Little Britain, The Armando Iannucci Shows, Come Fly With Me, Trigger Happy TV, So Graham Norton, Smack The Pony, The Armstrong and Miller Show, Bob and Margaret, Spitting Image, Harry and Paul, Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show, Alexei Sayle’s Merry Go Round, Man Stroke Woman and Big Train. Their Radio 4 panel game, The 99p Challenge, won a Sony silver award. As well as writing comedy, they are experienced writers of feature-length animation: their credits include Gnomeo and Juliet (released February 2011) and The Pirates! (in production at Aardman). They did an uncredited rewrite of Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride. Andy is originally from Aylesbury but now lives in London. He used to be the stage dancer for The Pod, Julian Barratt’s comedy techno band which was the forerunner of The Mighty Boosh. His hobbies include urban canoeing. Despite rival claims on the internet, Andy Riley is the true originator of the tradition of cross-dressing at the Towersey folk festival.
My boyfriend has the entire Andy Riley series in our bathroom for some 'toilet reading' so I've been working my way through the collection. Selfish pigs is the last one we have and I feel a little like I saved the best till last.
The Bunny Suicides work so well because they are outrageous and funny. Selfish Pigs is much the same, without the morbid overtone. It's a simple context but it works so well. Some are particularly realistic and others are shocking. A few in this book vary slightly to Riley's other cartoons as they have some speech from the pig, which makes him seem even more lifelike.
It is a fantastic, quirky book that can be read in a few minutes.
A laugh out loud book, that captures the selfish nature of people... erh, I mean pigs. I was howling through every page. The only sad thing; there hasn't been published a sequel, and that the book was short.
I loved all the Bunny suicides -books, so I rushed out to buy this with high expectations as soon as I saw it was out. Unfortunately, it didn't really live up to those expectations. It felt like some of the ideas were not fully thought out. A slight disappointment.
Oh how this made me laugh. It's great fun, especially when you're in a bah-humbug mood. Although the one with the mamma mia DVDS is probably not so much a selfish pig one as a kind gesture to the rest of the world =).
I finally gave this one a quick read today! I'm not sure it's quite the humor I'd expected. While a lot of these are definitely selfish and funny (pigs trapping geese in a cage then putting on geese costumes to eat the bread crumbs people throw into a pond) some are more on the mean side (trapping people inside a room that's on fire).
Silti niiden hulvattomassa törkytyylissä on jotain röhkäisevän ihanaa.
Siat ovat itsekkäitä – aivan kuten mekin. Kirjaan mahtuu käsittämättömän sikamaisia tapoja keskittyä omaan napaansa ja tunkea oma pikku kärsänsä joka paikkaan. Haluaisitko istua sian takana leffassa? Et? Ei kukaan muukaan."
Oh my Goodness!!! These pigs are so selfish! Most of the cartoons in this book feature just one pig in each scene but some have two pigs and one cartoon features 11 selfish pigs. I think these piggies are very mean - for example one little piggy tries to make Jesus pay a fake toll when he is carrying His cross up a hill to be crucified. This book covers a wide range from Christian themes to popular culture. I bought the book when it made me smile during the Borders store closing sales of September 2011. I would like to read the Bunny Suicide books by the same author/artist.
Mizantropova biblia!
My mom and I started flipping through this book at the library. We were laughing so hard that the librarians were giving us evil looks. We had to check it out and take it home. Hysterically funny.
