I was led to this gem by a neatly written quotation in Haupt Heydemarck's piece on his service in the German flying corps in the Balkan campaign, War Flying in Macedonia. Something about how one night a pair of bombs dropped near camp and a strafing had dispelled an excessively sentimental mood of longing for home among the British troops listening to a gramophone.
