WHEN PASSION LIES (The Shadow Keepers #4) by J.K.Beck
WHEN PASSION LIES is the 4th book in The Shadow Keepers series by J.K. Beck. Focusing on vampire Tiberius and his mate Caris, When Passion Lies is a story about two vampires who have passionately loved each other for centuries without reservation until the day one is cursed to walk the world feared by humans and Shadow creatures alike. Finding his mate is now transformed into the very being all Shadow creatures fear, Tiberius has no choice but to banish his love. But his heart is dealt another blow, when it is rumored she has taken to the bed of the vampire enemy Were.
There is plenty of necessary background information imparted by J.K. that sets up the story. The premise centres around a hybrid species of Shadow creatures created by the crossing of a vampire and werewolf. When bitten by another, the surviving hybrid is cursed to carry the ‘Black Plague’ and an acid-like blood that will destroy anyone who comes in contact. Feared as more of a weapon and threat, the hybrids have been hunted and destroyed until their numbers were eradicated. But a man hoping to find a cure for his ‘wife’ captures Caris and forces the hybrid change through injections and a weren bite. And 20 years later, Caris must return to the man who had banished her from vampire life and his bed.
Caris has hunted the man who turned her life into a living hell and placing a bullet into his head was only the start. But finding herself, facing Tiberius for her sins, Caris knows that her heart will always belong to this man.
Running for the Chair of the Alliance, Tiberius did not need the added pressure of associating with a hybrid vampire, but when Caris is hunted by the Preternatural Enforcement Committee for the murder of the man who has abused and tortured her, his love for the woman who had been his mate for centuries will force him to join Caris in their search for a missing young woman who may be the only other living hybrid in the world. Could the same man that had tortured Caris be continuing his inhumane experiments with other women? As their search continues, Tiberius must make a decision that will affect both of their lives and his chances at leading the Alliance. And pardoning Caris for the death of the man who had forced upon the hybrid change, would be Tiberius’s first act as Chair, if only another powerful ‘ally’ did not stand in his way.
WHEN PASSION LIES is heartbreaking tale of what happens when the safety of one overshadows the safety of many. Bannished without the benefit of explanation, Caris is sent spiraling into an unknown world and the fear that she will be targeted for destruction as those who were killed hundreds of years before. Believing Tiberius has turned his back Caris turns to the only man who is willing to risk his own life to teach Caris to control both her daemon and hybrid. Caris soon embarks on a 20year search to destroy the one man who had effectively destroyed her life. But her hopes for a HEA will depend on the man that stole her heart centuries before.
What would you do if you got a second chance with the only person you had ever loved? (And given the fact that Tiberius is an immortal vampire that is a very long time) What would you do if you got a chance to correct the biggest mistake you've ever made? And if you were on the other side of this coin? What if you were the person who was betrayed, who's heart got rip from your chest: could you forgive?
This book has by far been my favourite of this series but i think its because we had only seen glimpses of Caris and Tiberius before and to tell you the truth they didn't really come across as the good guys.
This books sets the story straight and if you really want to know how everything started then you should start with the ebook Midnight.
Tiberius the vampire leader who had to banish his mate and true love(Caris)for the good of his people.
Loved the inner fight within their selves, Caris believing that Tiberius had forsaken her for the good of his people, then later finding out that Tiberius never stopped loving her and continued to do everything he could to keep her save.
This really was a great story, seeing these to characters come together again.
The 5 stars does not include Midnight (book 3.5 in the series). Even though it's in the back of this book I have not read it yet. I plan on counting that as a book on it's own.
This is a very good series. When I read her first three books, I couldn't wait for the next installment. They are dark, exciting and romantic. Just my kind.
A line to remember "Love can be interrupted. It can be broken. It can even be betrayed. But it cannot be erased." A wealth of characters and intrigue, many predictable moments but still entertaining to read
Had a hard time getting into this book. Had to stop at page 96 and start all over from the beginning because I lost track of the story. I think it was more me then the book
Tiberius and Caris were mates for centuries, which isn’t really a long time for vampires. They fought together and loved together until the night that Caris disappeared and when she returned, she had been changed into something that all vampires feared. Tiberius was torn between his love for Caris and his duty to protect his people. Politics and passion warred in Tiberius, until the gap between those two decisions tore them apart with a deep divide between them. The decision that he made changed Caris’ love into hatred – a very deep and strong hatred.
Now many years later, events have brought Tiberius and Caris back together but not as a loving couple. Caris is now part of a shadow group that Tiberius needs information on and time is running short for him to get it. Caris could care less what Tiberius wants and certainly has no plans on working with him anytime soon. However, they both discover that the love between has not disappear but was buried deep and has now sprung out again, just waiting for a chance to glow again. Danger is part of life for both Caris and Tiberius, so when they find themselves working together to discover who is trying to release an old horror into their world it was only a matter of time until those other old feelings came out also. Tiberius is just a vote away from gaining his dreamed of position as the Chairman of the Council but Caris can never join him in that place. Will they discover their love again, only to lose it to politics one more time?
Love and hate are separated by a very thin line so when two hearts are given a second chance, will they find love or be divided by hate? Tiberius and Caris seek this answer in When Passion Lies. I didn’t blame Caris on her feelings towards Tiberius when I read about what had driven her love into hate. When faced with the same thing, I believe most women would have reacted the same way. Tiberius had a lot to make up for and yet I couldn’t make myself hate him like I should have. I began to soften towards Tiberius as I learned just what he had been doing in the years since they were separated. It wasn’t hard to see that the passion between Tiberius and Caris was not only still there but just under the surface. Because they started off by loving and fighting side by side, I was not surprised to see that passion not only rose to the surface, but combusted between them. As I read the last few pages, I thought once again life would tear Tiberius and Caris apart but I was proved wrong when this time love was triumphant. When Passion Lies takes two battered hearts and helps them find the way to their happily ever after against deadly odds
At the height of the Vampire/Weren battle for supremacy, the species waged war against each other when they weren't fighting each other and the hybrid creatures they made by biting each other. The hybrids were dreaded and feared by both races, unfortunately, Tiberius' lady love, Caris was a hybrid and before that a warrior that fought at his side.
Sacrificing their own happiness for the good of the vampire race, Caris convinces Tiberius the time is ripe for him to step beyond his ambassadorship and into a seat on the Alliance as the vampire representative and spokesman. Against his better judgment, Tiberius travels to London to fight to represent the vampires, leaving Caris hidden until his return.
However, Caris is found, captured and tortured for years by the weren though the rumor designed to torture Tiberius stated Caris had replaced Tiberius in her heart and her bed with the enemy. After years of torture and being experimented on, Caris escapes and kills her high level weren jailor.
The PEC wastes no time declaring Caris an enemy of the shadow realm and dispatches soldiers to kill her. Tiberius walks a fine line as he's torn by how and if he can assist the woman he once and still loves and maintaining his position on the Alliance by singing the party-line of despising all things hybrid.
While Tiberius and Caris had that great forbidden love thing going on, for this readers taste it was the least of the read. The background of the war and explanations of the species and the Alliance's fears and self-serving actions took more than its fair share of pages. (Possibly made tedious by jumping immediately from When Wicked Craves where some background was covered. Rating:4stars
This just made three-stars. I don't know what it is, but for some reason I'm not really connecting with this series. I feel like I should love it, but I don't. I read the first book in the series, skimmed the next two and read this one. Something's just missing for me.
In this one, I liked the characters. Caris and Tiberius were engaging and intriguing. The problem? The story. I didn't really get the chance to fall in love with them as a couple. They're already in love. The story is about them finding their way back to each other, but I didn't fully buy into the fantasy.
When all is said and done, I think I would have enjoyed reading about how they first fell in love with each other more. The potential was there for me to fall in love with their story. There was just this sense of disconnection. Hmmm... Even now, I'm not sure I'm explaining this correctly.
I think this will be the last book I read in this series. I read the blurbs for the next two books, but I'm just not interested in the characters. Sad.
"When Passion Lies" by J.K. Beck. Book 4 in The Shadow Keepers series.
Loved this story! The main characters of Tiberius and Caris were just meant to be together. The storyline was excellent and the detailed just enough that you could picture exactly what was happening.
Political intrigue, half-breeds, lost love, found love, revenge, scientific experiments and world domination! This book has all of this packed in a story that's a little shorter than your average book. Included at the end of this book is the novella MIDNIGHT. I read this novella as an eBook before I even knew it was included as bonus material in this book. Personally, I recommend reading MIDNIGHT first so that you have the background between Tiberius and Caris which makes this book all the more enjoyable.
Here's the link to my review of MIDNIGHT, Book 3.5 in the series.
I am enjoying this seris and I will be starting the next book right away!
After the heroine was kidnapped and infected with the werewolf virus, she was banished from her vampire clan and made into a dangerous outcast. The hero suffered greatly with the decision to do this to his mate but it had to be done. She wasn't able to control her change and therefore was a risk to his people. But he never stopped loving her. He should have killed her but never could he bring himself to do so he banished her instead. Despite the heroine's anger at his betrayal, she soon realizes that he tried to find her but was made to believe that she was sleeping with his enemy. He funded a research into voiding out the werewolf virus and protected her as best he could while knowing she hated him. The sweetest part was when she asked him why he would do all these things for her, he answered "because you're the love of my life.". God if that doesn't pull at your heart strings.
It's been along time between books but I was surprised that I was able to remember things about Tiberius and Caris. Of course they weren't involved, instead it seemed like they were enemies. I liked Tiberius; he's older than dirt which means he stronger then most, he loves with all his being and he loyal to a fault. I liked Caris; she driven, strong, intelligent and determined. I was so glad these two reconnected and didn't fight their feelings for one another. They just went with it, it felt right and so they acted on it. They made one hell of team when their enemy was so determined to destroy humanity. They worked well together and trusted each other; it was a thing of beauty. Great story. Highly recommend.
I have been hooked on this story from the beginning and this book just keeps me coming back for more.
Tiberius -- Vampire dedicated to protecting his kind and the shadow world safe, who despite it all still longs for one he let go years before.
Caris -- the "hybrid" (not by her choice-oops spoiler alert), has been living a life amongst the weren, hating Tiberius for pushing her away after what happened to her.
A kidnapping, murder, upcoming Alliance election brings Caris & Tiberius back together and they realize that the feelings for one another may have been disguised by hate, only to realize that they are truly meant to be together.
The first book in the series is definitely my favorite (I love Lucas), however, this would definitely be number 2 on my list.
This book was going to be a make or break book in the series for me. I liked the first 2, but the last one was missing something. As I read this one I found my mind wandering and I kept putting it down to clean around the house, it just couldn't keep my attention. I found Tiberius to be cold, Caris blah, couldn't see why they would want the other, then they had the hold betrayal to get past. After 90 pages I realized I didn't care how things worked out with them. In the end this one wasn't for me.
This was my least favorite of the series thus far. Not a lot of action and much of it read like more of a detective caper than a gritty vampire romance. As always, there was some steamy romance, but I just wasn't feeling it the way I have with the previous 3 books, and the ending seemed rushed.
I enjoyed the various side characters, although, at times, it was quite confusing trying to keep up with who was who. I do hope that the side characters' storylines continue to be explored in future installments.
Done!! Took me a while cuz I've had so much going on. But I enjoyed this book :-) I like this series. Both characters were strong & held my attention. This author has surely grown on me. I enjoy the world & how it all works.
I have to say this is my fave out of the entire series so far. This story has been in the making since the first book and I just love Caris she was witty and strong after all she endured. Nothing but goodness about this book :)
I really enjoyed this book. The books before Tiberious seemed like an untouchable hardass politician, but this book really showed you the real "man" behind everything. I loved the story of him and Caris. I also like the extra little novella afterward of when Tiberous first met Caris.
Not my favorite book of hers. The others in the series had alot more action this just had a lot of inter monologue. It has a short story at the end of it about the characters, I didn't read it because I disliked the book that much. :(
One of my favorites in the series. Tiberius and Caris were both interesting and a bit of a mystery so it was fun diving into both of their heads. I was a bit disappointed in the ending, but understand why it had to be that way. I hope to see more of them in the future.
