Shelves: plays
1938 play by the great Jean Cocteau, supposedly meant to be a farce with the framework of popular theatre --so the melodramatic ending can perhaps be forgiven.

Banned in its era, it lacks the sting its original audience would have felt, but still has that claustrophobic, get-me-out-of-this family feel.

Psycho-sexual, semi-incestuous family relationships, plus plenty of quirk (A grandfather who obsessively counted semi-colons, and knows how many were in Balzac's La Cousine Bette.)

Worth it for

A little too much is not always enough.

* 1000 novels everyone must read: the definitive list: Family and Self

Selected by the Guardian's Review team and a panel of expert judges, this list includes only novels – no memoirs, no short stories, no long poems – from any decade and in any language. Originally published in thematic supplements – love, crime, comedy, family and self, state of the nation, science fiction and fantasy, war and travel – they appear here for the first time.

Read this in French in high-school. I loved Cocteau then and still love to read great quotations from his works.
