The inner workings of the European Union are as much a mystery to those living within its confines as they are to those of us who reside elsewhere. The Brussels bureaucracy that sets many of the EU’s policies feels remote to its citizens, yet the influence of its decisions can extend worldwide and throughout the global marketplace. In this timely and insightful essay, Hans ...more

This short essay was written in 2011 and rehearses familiar criticisms with regard to how the European project is taking shape through the EU: technocratic hubris and overstretch, bureaucratic meddling, collusion with financial interests, democratic deficit. Enzensberger’s argument pivots on Arendt’s dictum that ‘bureaucracies may be more threatening to freedom and civility than the most outrageous of past tyrannies’. He may well be right. And as the costs of the intrinsic dumbness of troika bur ...more

"The answer to Victor Hessel", is what is written on the back of this booklet. Nothing is less true. This is a largely populist pamphlet in which all the flat criticism on the European construction is gathered. Not that there is no criticism to be made on Europe, but the level of the argumentation in this booklet is really below all standards. I prefer the inspired indignation of a 93-year-old! ...more

Flojito.
