4 Stars ~ This was a surprisingly fun read. Cheryl Reavis originally penned this as Cinda Richards. This book, written in the mid-80's is one of her first published romances.

Amelia's in her mid 30's, a literacy teacher for both young and adult, living in her 150 year old family home in Tennessee. She's also recovering from a heartbreaking divorce. Her husband, Daniel, left her for one of his 21 year old grad students. To top it off, she's worried about her veteran brother who is unpredictable and struggling with PTSD. Ten years before, Bobby was on the humpty-dumpty ward in the VA hospital in New York and in the bed beside him in a nearly full body cast was Mac. Mac had left a huge impression on Amelia, so when he calls now to tell her that Bobby is with him in New Mexico, she's worried about Bobby but relieved that he's with Mac.

Sent back stateside body broken, Mac endured the pain and then came the Dear John letter from his fiancée. It was the bond he formed with the vet in the next bed and his sweet sister that kept him going. Darlin' Amelia is what his Dad called her, with the emphasis on the Darlin'. Behind his mirrored glasses (to hide his pain) he'd watched her and loved her. But she was spoken for so all she'd ever be is his buddy's sister and his fantasy. Mac likes his life as rancher with his Dad, he flies planes and does rodeo for extra cash. Which he needs, since he finally did marry that Dear John letter fiancée only for her to take off with a Calgary rodeo star, prompting divorce. When she suddenly shows up two years later with a toddler that is undoubtedly Mac's, he wants to be a part of the boys life, and now comes the custody battle.

Amelia figures the only way to get answers on how Bobby is doing is for her to fly to New Mexico and from the moment the plane lands she's whisked by Mac on a wild adventure. Mac adores pushing Amelia's buttons, and she's always quick to rise to his bait.
“You like doing that, don’t you?” she accused him. “You like getting me all upset when you know good and well I’m going to do whatever it is just as soon as I hear the reason—only you’re not about to tell me the reason until I’m ready to have a stroke or something.”

They have a few obstacles to jump over, but these two get their HEA. This is a real gem. Though written in the 80's, I didn't find it dated, just a real pleasure.

This book is a strange love story. The chapters are so long which made me somewhat sleepy. But it is still was a good story.
