Among Mrs. Brice's 25 mice, all but one do everything together. And this mouse's difference ‘comes in handy when the mice meet a cat, and while twelve run this way and twelve run that, this mouse runs this way and that, wearing out the cat and saving them all. The simple, gracefully repetitive text and bright drawings will make a preschool hero of the clever little mouse.' 'C.
Whether you’re seven or seventy, the chances are you’ve probably come in contact with one of his many books (150 plus), or cartoons that have appeared in over 200 magazines in the course of his lifetime, including Laugh it Off which was syndicated for 20 years. His comic strip Tuffy, about a little girl who did funny things, was declared essential for national morale during WWII by William Randolph Hearst.
Syd has worked in diverse genres. He had the distinct honor of working with Alfred Hitchcock and Ellery Queen as a contributor of short fiction writing. He was awarded national advertising commissions for large companies such as Chevrolet, Maxwell House Coffee and others. He had his own TV show (Tales of Hoff on CBS), traveled the world as entertainment on cruise ships and entertained children and teachers in schools and libraries across the country.
I bought a rather large inexpensive lot of vintage children’s books on eBay because there were several among them I wanted, and this was one of the others. It’s a cute story about a woman with 25 pet mice, one of whom is always doing something different. I didn’t realize it until I looked this book up on Goodreads, but it seems author Syd Hoff was quite prolific, and also wrote Danny and the Dinosaur.
Not one of Hoff's best, but still a short story tale about a woman who loves her brood of mice and one little mouse that stands alone from the others. Not much else to say. My rating - 2/5
This book was about the daily life of Mrs. Brice and her 25 mice. When she slept, exercised or shopped 24 little mice went with her. But one little mouse did not! This one little mouse is different from the other mice, and chooses to do things his/her own way.
This book is best suited for early readers who enjoys reading fun, fictional stories. The author uses repetitive wording and an intro to irregular plurals to capture the novice reader. She uses this element well.
This book is a great introductory lesson to irregular plurals such as mice and mouse. I could select one of the sentences such as "She has twelve little mice" and "But one little mouse" to compare the differences of the words.
Mrs. Brice had 25 mice that she took care of. She washed them and dry behind their ears. She fed them cheese, took them shopping with her, and she played music for them. One day as she take her mice to the store a cat started to chase them. The tiniest cat outrun the mice. Mrs. Brice told the cat to go home and leave the mice and she rewarded them with cheese.
This is a cute beginning reader about, well, mice.
Let's face it, nobody buys beginning readers planning to read them again and again and again. They often buy them for the price. This will do the trick nicely for an early reader.
Most of this book has rhyming lines so makes it fun for small listeners. A silly book that little ones will grin and giggle at, especially the littlest mouse.
Pretty straightforward early reader book about Mrs Brice and her 25 mice. 24 of them conform and one is rebellious but saves the day so it's all good. Fun, nice pictures, simple words.
