Poet, translator, essayist, and lecturer, influenced by French Surrealism and Symbolism. Celan was born in Cernăuţi, at the time Romania, now Ukraine, he lived in France, and wrote in German. His parents were killed in the Holocaust; the author himself escaped death by working in a Nazi labor camp. "Death is a Master from Germany", Celan's most quoted words, translated into English in different ways, are from the poem 'Todesfuge' (Death Fugue). Celan's body was found in the Seine river in late April 1970, he had committed suicide.

A eto.

Pobogu, dal ste sumnjali.) i Bends i OK Computer.
Nije to ključno. Naprosto...

For such a small book, this volume of poems by Paul Celan (who not only to German pupils is probably best know for his TODESFUGE) is quite intense. Celan is very reductionist, boiling complex situations down until every word has multiple layers of meaning, corresponding with the words around as part of a thick net. But at the same time the reduced language can act as a wall, blocking you from understanding its meaning (hence the title SPRACHGITTER - word grids). Celan was heavily influenced by the experience of the Holocaust, and the impossibility to communicate these experiences while needing to and trying to was a main point in his work.

You need your full concentration to get through his poems, but when you do, it is rewarding. Every word, every line evokes a lot and even if you don't get all the layers of meaning (like the strong references to jewish mysticism I don't understand for the most part), you will get the emotions and some of the scenes that he has sealed in his unique language. I particularly enjoy the very special kind of melancholy he evokes, often trailing towards sadness, sometimes getting there, sometimes not.

It is no everyday read for sure, but if you're into poetry and don't shy away from hard topics, I would recommend trying it out.
