Beware if you are considering this series. This book has more triggers than a gun show in Texas!

So, yeah, it's dark. There is murder, rape, torture, and bloody battles. The bad guys are so evil that it is kind of funny. (I know, I'm sick). But, here's what I mean: one evil brother watches his younger evil brother brutally rape and murder a woman right before his eyes. When he's finished, they start having a conversation about how much they love their little baby nephew demon.

There was a quick snap before her lifeless body slumped to the ground. As he zipped up his pants, he sighed. "You know, brother, I think I love that kid like he's my own."

Salvatore smiled. "As do I, Zarek."....

Salvatore watched as Zarek sauntered out the door. All in all, he was such a good kid.

Okay, that's some hardcore evil shit! And, it kind of cracked me up. The evil guys are truly sociopaths, and sociopaths in books always make me laugh.

The overall story and world in this series is pretty compelling. There is this weird blood curse going on that is seriously messed up and dark as hell. But, the thing about paranormal romance novels is that you really need to like the couple in order to really like the book, and in this one, I didn't like either one of them. The male is a complete dick and was in the last book too. The female is so completely boring and one-dimensional that she could easily be replaced with a ball.

Wilson definitely had more personality than this chick

So, even though the world is cool and my bloodlust is sated through these books, this one was just kind of meh for me. I was actually rooting for the bad guys, and maybe for some terrible unhappy ending for our couple. Oh well, maybe next time...

see? now, that's how to end a story!! Nailed it!

3 Tentative Stars...I'm still struggling how to rate this book.

For the most part I liked this book but I certainly didn't love it. I know I'm in the minority here, as most readers seemed to enjoy this second story more than the first. For me, however, it just wasn't as good.

There was more focus on the romance in this plot but I didn't care for the direction the author took the love story. There was a slight love triangle that just felt silly, ridiculous and clichéd. It was obvious from the beginning that there was something terribly wrong with WHO the hero thought was his destiny, and the resolution dragged on for far too long. Also, we were treated, or should I say tortured, with one of the main evil vampire's POV throughout the book and I hated being in his head!!! It made me sick and disgusted to view atrocious actions through his perverse mind.

All in all, this book didn't live up to the first. Not for me anyway. It was still well written, character driven, brutal, and as gory (just think of the movie Saw) as the first–which the horror-movie-junkie in me loved–but it also took on a deprave feel that left a disgusting and bitter taste in my mouth. The ending, however, (for this couple) was fabulous.

Caution: There are two rape scenes in this book. One involving a woman and one involving a man. I hated these scenes with a passion. They served no purpose other than to shock and I dropped my rating accordingly. Please use discretion before starting these books!!

I seriously think something is wrong with me for laughing so much with a dark romance book. I am not that crazy to laugh about torture, murder, pain, rape, evil and so on and so forth, although they go to the next level of darkness in this series, but the rest was so funny.

I always wondered how it would be if these fated mates hated each other instead of falling in love at first sight... the answer is: hilarious!
I was truly cracking up with how wrong everything went for the hero and his mate. The hero is a straight forward kind of person that has no tactics whatsoever, which I also find hilarious, so yeah, while the book kept up all the darkest stuff you could imagine, it also has a funny and emotional side.

And the king is the cutest. I feel like pinching his cheeks!
But if you want to read this books, I say it again, just be sure you know it is quite dark. The evil is truly evil.

Wow! What a fantabulous read! Blood Awakening is the second book in Tessa Dawns Blood Curse series and it brings us deeper into the world of Dark Moon Vale and it's inhabitants. Once again we see the battles between the descendants of Jadon and Jeager and how horrific war can really be.

There is so many awesome things about this book that I don't know where to start. Also, not being a fan of super long reviews myself I'll try to keep myself from babbling too much LOL!

The role of hero in this book is played by Marquis Silivasi, an Ancient Master Warrior vampire that was born of the House of Jadon. Our heroine is Ciopori Demir. Ciopori is the daughter of King Sakarias, who was ruler of the Celestial Beings before the Blood Curse. She is also the sister of Jadon, Marquis's ancestor. How can that be you ask? The answer is simple; she was put into a deep slumber to protect her from her blood crazy brother Jeager and his followers.

Though Blood Awakening is a dark fantasy, the romance in this book was written superbly. The attraction between Marquis and Ciopori was so powerful that you couldn't help but to be drawn to it. I think that the fact that Marquis's cries of anguish woke Ciopori from her 2,000 year slumber attests to the intensity of their bond. When it looked like Ciopori wasn't Marquises destiny it was such a blow. My heart broke for them. Finally, after all his years of being alive, he had found love and it was being ripped away from him.

The closer look that we got into Marquis's personality was amazing. Whereas in Blood Destiny Marquis was a rock, nothing but hardness, it wasn't the case in this book. Here, we see beyond the hard exterior and into the man. Marquis may be socially inept and extremely prickly but within him lies the core of an extremely passionate and caring man.

OK so maybe I'm painting the wrong picture of Marquis. He's still a domineering Alpha male. He's still incredibly hard to get along with and scary as Hell but I can't get past the softer side of his psyche that we are shown in Blood Awakening.

Blood Awakening is a dark Fantasy so there was much more than Marquises love life to it. The darkness in this book is readily apparent. There was plenty of guts and gore in here but there was really only one scene that gave me pause. ***SPOILER ALERT*** The nursery scene. It's weird, I never had a problem with the sacrifice that the Blood Curse demanded but the slaughter of the babies in the nursery got to me. I understand that the babies were evil and needed to die. It was still hard to read about though.I think it was because there were so many of them. However, once I distanced myself from my reading and reminded myself how evil those damn sons of Jeager were, it was a lot easier to deal with.

All in all I had to give this book a 5 star rating. The action was amazing and the emotions were so real and authentic I found myself crying many times. In fact, at the end I was crying so much that my boyfriend was afraid that something bad had happened when he saw me. There were also some scenes that I couldn't help laughing out load about. Braden and his ridiculous antics were hilarious as always and Marquis is so clueless in social situations that you can't help but chuckle.

Blood Awakening was a fantastic read and I eagerly await the next installment in the Blood Curse series. Tessa Dawn's writing is fabulous and seems to get better with every book. If you can take the horror in this book then it's definitely a must read for you!

*Beware, this book contains rape, blood, guts and gore

2.5 Stars rounded up to a 3?

Last month the MacHalos had a little vampire month buddy read and one of the books we read was Blood Destiny. A few of us really liked that book and wanted to keep reading.
Shelly and I read this one, but as excited as I was for Marquis's book, this just wasn't as good as I had hoped.

The blood and gore, torture and general wtf-ery were all still there, so if like me, you were into that in the first book, well good news, that sick shit continues! But, and this is a major but, the story was nowhere near as interesting. The plot twist was so incredibly convoluted that I wished there could have been a different reason, literally ANY other reason for this unfolded.

There are still character's whose stories I am interested in reading, but I don't think I will be in a big hurry to get to them. I read the epilogue which essentially is the set up for the next book in the series and all could think was, who gives a fuck.

Probably not a good idea to continue right now.

But hey, props for making some truly evil villainous vampires and not being afraid to just really go there with it to make them so evil. I could do with a little less of the rapey situations to prove that they are big bad though, I mean ripping hearts out of chest cavities and forcing your enemies to slit their own throats is pretty evil enough.

Marquis Silivasi is an Ancient Warrior. He is the head of his family and all that entails of Vampires with Strong Human Emotions. He feels a failure as he wasn't able to save his youngest brother Shelby from the curse that plagues the House of Jadon. When he is finally able to visit his brothers grave, he lets loose with emotions that wreak havoc on all the elements, causing wide spread destruction. Yet it is these very emotions that lift a spell put on one of the Original Celestial Beings."Ciopori". As he looks at her he remembers dreams these past 1500 yrs, they are of her. He knows every nuance about her. Ciopori recognizes this Strong Proud Warrior from her dreams. The chemistry is immediate. The love and attraction is instantaneous.

While awaiting for his Sign from the Heavens, A Blood Red Moon with his Constellation to appear, he must deal with a human woman under his families protection " Kristina". Wow, is she ever weak when it comes to her boyfriend who degrades her and beats her. This will be the last time per Marquis. Kristina offers up herself to save this lowlife, of course that only makes Marquis madder than a bull in the ring with a red cape. He takes her to the House of Jadon's clinic for medical attention. Guess what , yup you got it, A Blood Red Moon with his Constellation appears in the skys and on Kristinas arm.

All hell breaks loose, Marquis can not even fathom being with such a weak willed woman. Kristina can not stand him, he is overbearing always right and makes everyone obey him. Not to mention he is one scary ass dude.

Ciopori can not believe that her arm is not marked with Marquis Constellation. She must see and talk with him before he takes Kristina as his Destiny. Wow do things get hot and heavy, smexy like!! Yet they must walk away from each other or Marquis will die in 30 days like his younger brother for not fulfilling the curse.

My Thoughts:

Marquis is the most pain in the ass man, intense never laughing always right. Very non-likeable, egotistical Vampire/Man. I mean in book ,1 I was ready to take him out myself. If I had ever met him, I am sure he would have sewn my mouth shut and made me his puppet. Not a dam thing to like about this guy. Than Ciopori shows up and I start to see another side to him , still tho not really liking this guy.
Kristina gets added to the mix and oh my, really really do not like him.

Than "Tessa" the Author throws a whammy at me! I start to really see him with all his pain and loneliness and what he has been through the last 1500 years. Damn, okay now I am starting to sympathize for the guy. Add a very evil vampire to mix and Marquis looks like a lamb with pointy teeth!!
I am not giving away anything else from this wonderful, amazing book. To many subjects and I would spoil the milk for you. You are just gonna have to read it.
Welllllllll if you can handle Dark Fantasy, this book is not for everyone, you must have a strong digestion for all things that go bump in the night and day and ohh blood, death (not the nice die in your sleep kind)!

Yeah I'm speechless. This was another great addition to this series. There were some hard, just flat out "WTH?!" moments here, as well some really beautiful ones. It all flowed well. The stakes are a bit higher here, more dramatic, but this just makes it all awesome IMO. Even though there were moments when I was like..

WOW!! This book was just fantastic! Every time I thought the book was going in one direction it would go in another! I loved that! There are times when I read books and I can pretty much guess where the story is going...Ummm not in this case! So many times this story took turns. I loved how we got to see more of Marquis' character and things that he struggles with. Then of course getting to know Ciopori more and what her character was all about. I will say somethings were pretty graphic in this book and it may turn some people off but I just think you need to not read so much into it. Tessa writes things for the readers to understand things aren't so peachy and these Dark Ones are just retched people! As I have said about her before she has some balls and just goes for it. Good for you Tessa, now if only you don't make us wait a year for the next one I'll be happy =)

Another magnificent installment to the 'Blood Curse' series! I wish I could give it a 9 on a scale of 5, and I would give it a 10 except for a couple of (IMHO) overly-long smex scenes that I finally just skimmed through (but then I read a lot of that stuff and I commonly do that after a couple of scenes), and a place or two where the story dragged for a few pages (too long in the Jaegar vamps' caves, a little too much of the wrong girl situation, etc.).

I would say it is very important to start out with Book 1... it's not that much of a big deal with some series, but with this one it is.

This is a very violent book, so for those who are bothered by that sort of thing, this wouldn't be for you at all. These guys are the vampires' vampyres... no mercy, no prisoners - really viscious, bloody, gorey stuff all explained in vivid colors. There is also a rape scene, baby killing, and a forced conversion of a female. The 'good guys' can be just as brutal as the bad guys! To some extent, the 'bad guys' are forced into their way of life. Much more violent than BDB or the other vamp series I have read, but male violence (unfortunately?) doesn't resonate much with me unless it is against women, but there is some of that here, too, and I felt it was a little too easily shrugged off (or bought off) by one victim.

That being said, it all seems appropriate to this series and these vampires. This is a PNR fantasy, after all.

Tessa Dawn has built a fascinating 'world', yet I would like to have more of a sense of the entirety of the Jadon-line vamps (how many, what do they do, etc.) like we got with the description of the Jaegar-line vamps' vast underground labyrinth. Now that we know how many there are of the Jaegar vamps, it seems that their above-ground cousins are vastly outnumbered.

The epilogue was a great set-up for the next book... the complexity of this story is so well done. I can't wait for the next one!!

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I LOVED this one!! What was missing for me in the first one was was definitely present here, as far as the romance goes!! Loved Marquis and all the emotion and drama involved in his and Ciopori's situation! This story had some great twists that kept it fast paced and very exciting..we even got to see a little bit more of the Dark Ones side of things which was very interesting and rather twisted.

Again, i really enjoyed the interaction between all the Silivasi brothers and something that is really neat and unique about this vampire world is that once you reach a certain age you go to vampire "university" and get to specialize in a trade..each of the Silivasi brothers are unique because of this...they all share the same vampire characteristics..super strong, super fast, heightened senses, etc...but a couple are warriors by trade, there's also a brother who chose the path of a healer and another who chose to become a master wizard and they all play very vital roles in each others lives and journeys, no one overshadows another.

The violence was still very much a big part of this book but again, once you've read the first book you quickly come to realize that it's just par for the course in a Tessa Dawn book and really just adds to the suspense of her great storytelling. There were also a couple of rape scenes in this one, one of which was a little bit uncomfortable to read..even knowing who it was happening to. If things of this nature are something that you are unable to handle then i would highly advise you skip this book. Other than that though, i wouldn't hesitate to recommend these books to a lover of darker paranormal romances. I can't wait to read about each of the other brother's finding their "destinies"...even poor Kristina...i would like to see her find someone good! Once again, the epilogue gives you a bit of a sneak peek as to who the next book will be about...i can't wait!!! :)

Hot damn, I loved this book!

Tessa Dawn has sucked me into this series. I am thoroughly addicted, and I thought this one was even better than the first. At first, I thought there was going to be a love triangle with the way the story was developing. I hate love triangles so this was not a happy turn of events for me. However, I liked the way the author handled the story, and most importantly she didn’t cross any lines for me. One of the reasons I hate triangles is someone eventually cheats on the other. I never felt like that happened here.

There was still an instalove storyline in this book, but it didn’t feel as much like it. The hero and heroine spent over a thousand years dreaming of each other. I liked this part of the story. It gave a sense of connection and history to a new romance.

I will admit I was a little worried about all the warnings about the rape scenes, and I won’t lie, they were pretty brutal. However, this sounds really bad of me to say, but I think I was fine with it because it wasn’t one of the protagonists of the story. I’ve read books before where the heroine gets raped and it makes me sick. I can’t handle it. This was a secondary character, so I felt removed from her. It’s almost like watching a rape scene on TV. The second rape was an evil character who you hate. It was a little upsetting, but I just reminded myself how much I hated the character and I was fine. Still, this could be hard for some readers, so be prepared.

Overall, I love it and I recommend it for fans of the paranormal.

Tessa Dawn has blown me away with Blood Awakening, the second book in her Blood Curse series. After reading the first book in the series, Blood Destiny, I had already fallen in love with the brothers of Dark Moon Vale. Blood Awakening brings us the story of Marquis Silivasi, the family elder and the most harsh and ruthless of all the brothers. His character was so captivating in the first book I was very anxious to read his story—Tessa Dawn did not disappoint me! Blood Awakening was amazing and, in my opinion, even better than the first book. We really got to see a lot more of the history behind the House of Jadon and House of Jaegar and the emotional struggles they each have faced. There were some scenes that were pretty graphic (rape and infanticide) and difficult to read, but it was really a necessary part of the book to get a true understanding of the viciousness and deeply evil existence of the Jaegar House. There were a few times in the first book I felt “sorry” for the men in the House of Jaegar, but the second book took care of that!

Blood Awakening is a fast paced, highly-addictive addition to the Blood Curse series! This series is a must read for fans of authors like Christine Feehan, Christina Dodd, and Lara Adrian.

O-M-G This books was AWESOME! I really wish I could give it more stars, Like maybe 10?

I really though this book was going to follow the same structure of book one... and how wrong I was... and how happy! This books is so much better than the first. I am now completely obsessed with everything about this book/series. The characters, their world, the dark ones, the females and most of all the Silivasi brothers and the oh so wonderful king Napolean. The most powerful vampire ever!!

There is so much happening in this book that I seriously don't even know where to beging. Everything got messed up and quickly out of hands and scalated into a big mess. I can honestly say that I sufered along with Marquis. I felt his loss, pain, love, compassion, anger, anxiety, anguish and desperation. It felt like everything was dangling by a thread and yet somehow Ms. Dawn managed to make everything all better in the end. Sigh!

I also discovered that we have not really seen the full extent of these warriors abilities/powers and I am really excited and looking forward to see what they will do next to WOW me. I'm so ready to pull more Zombie nights reading the next book... It so worth it.

I started this book yesterday, and could not put it down until I finished it.
The Blood Curse Series is my favorite. It's one of those series where the characters are so real, and you feel like you are a part of the world. Blood Destiny, the first book in the series, was so incredible. I figured it would surely be the best book in the series. I was wrong. Blood Awakening was really amazing, intense, and emotional. It was so different than the first book, but even better. I can't think of anything else now! It is such downer to be finished with it, and to have to wait. But in the meantime I will enjoy re-reading Blood Awakening, and revisiting the hot Silivasi brothers. I am hooked! I really look forward to more. Tessa Dawn's books are six stars to me.

I'm not sure why I didn't enjoy this second book as much as I expected to. I love a dark and suffering hero, but I didn't really like his fated mate. It's hard for me to enjoy a romance if I don't like the heroine and I just didn't in this one. There is a rape and murder scene in this one that was committed as a matter of course and treated almost dismissively. I realize that it was that way because the rapist is evil and heartless, but still...I don't know-maybe it's me. I haven't worked out how to review this one yet. However, I have every intention of continuing on with this series. Review to come.

I loved the first book Blood Destiny but, Blood Awakening blew me away. The characters are easy to get invested in, you really get to know them on a more intense level in this book. The story flows effortlessly off the page and there are several instances where the author infused humor into really intense situations making me laugh out loud, which I loved. For anyone that hasn’t read this series, you are missing out on an awesome adventure! Go to your bookstore or library, download to your devices but whatever you do don’t miss out!

The book does not go as expected at least not in the beginning, but that should be no surprise, like the first book this latest entry of the Blood Curse series is every bit as bold as the first book. Be prepared for another roller coaster ride of emotions. But have no fear the pay off is every bit as sweet as the first book!

Imagine you are the eldest of your siblings. Perhaps you do not have to...perhaps you are, in fact, the eldest sibling of your family. Now, imagine you are an Ancient Vampire Warrior, your parents taken from you, your younger brother dead because your enemies, the Dark Ones of the House of Jaegar, intervened and made it impossible for him to fulfill the ancient Blood Curse that looms over your kind. Imagine that these same enemies were the cause of the horrific death of a human woman you had known since birth. A woman whose family had been with yours for centuries. When all you see around you is death, when there seems to be nothing but a responsibility to save, to protect and to avenge...and when all you see is your own failure to do any of those things...what is left?

Blood Awakening will answer that question as we look into the life and mind of Marquis Silivasi, Ancient Vampire Warrior and head of the Silivasi family. As described by author, Tessa Dawn, Marquis "is sometimes cruel and socially inept, yet he is deathly loyal to his family". He is a 1500 year old Vampire who has carried the task of caring for his siblings. He protects them, trains them and will strike out at anyone who attempts to harm them or those in his charge.

But there is more to him, more than even he knows.

In Blood Awakening, he will come to learn and accept that there is in fact more to him and to life. We will follow his journey of personal awakening as he seeks to fulfill the terms of the Blood Curse bestowed on the House of Jadon centuries ago. We will accompany him on his path as he fights the schemes and treachery of the Dark Ones to find his Destiny, a woman chosen for him by the Ancient Gods to help him fulfill his covenant and with whom he can live out his days. Blood Awakening is an excellent follow up to Blood Destiny and provides a deeper look into this amazing world of darkness, light, ferocity and passion.

Again Tessa Dawn places a human face on immortal beings who traditionally are thought of as creatures without souls. She has developed characters that we can identify with...that we empathize with...that we root for and love. Marquis Silivasi is complicated and his story is riveting. You will feel his every emotion from the beginning and you will not be able to put this book down until the end.

Marquis Silivasi begins his day thinking, "What was the purpose of being a warrior...of being an Ancient...if he couldn't even protect the ones he loved? What was the purpose of surviving this long when his life had been nothing but time, education, endless battles, and loss? And why hadn't the one opportunity to love - to share such a barren existence - ever been given to him?"

His thoughts are quickly addressed!

Strap in!! This is one hell of a ride!!

Blood Awakening is Marquis' story. His anguish over what happened to his brother, Shelby, and Shelby's destiny "awakens" the sisters of Prince Jadon and Jaeger ... and one of them is also the woman of his dreams, Ciopori. But is she his destiny?

This book is a bit different from the first book in that you already know about the curse and what is happening so even though the author does a quick recap, things hit the fan much faster! And as intense as Marquis was in the first book, he is much more intense in this book and yes! we have some romance but we also have a lot of heartbreak. The part with Shelby at the end was a killer...I was not prepared but I do have to say that it bumped up my rating for this book.

Ciopori was really interesting and I actually went from not liking her to liking her (somewhat). I really did NOT like Kristina. She was way too whiny for me. I still really like all the brothers but especially Nachari. Napolean really grew on me too and we get a lot of information about him since his story is next.

Sooo...for the things I didn't like. These vampires are just too brutal and what's terrible is that you actually become used to the killing. But what I can't get used to the rapes. Poor Salvadore ... not! And I didn't care for what happened between Marquis and Kristina on the porch...even she didn't deserve that. Also, I didn't care for the slight similarities to the Black Dagger Brotherhood ... the types of cars, watches and the use of "Feel me".

Overall, a good edition to the series.

Favorite line:

"But it is your turn to live now. Your turn to love. Your turn to receive."

I'm not sure I can put into words how much I LOVE Blood Awakening! This is the second book in The Blood Curse Series written by Tessa Dawn. If you haven't read the first book, Blood Destiny yet, I suggest that you do so right away! This is an amazing series!
Blood Awakening is a VERY DARK fantasy/romance. So, please be forewarned! This book contains some very graphic and descriptive horror scenes. I feel that they truly bring to life just evil the sons of jaegar are. They are soul-less vampires. Rotten to the core. It also shows just how tough and strenuous life can be for the sons in The House of Jadon. They are very Alpha and very passionate and sexy. They are the vampires of the light. But, They have to dirty their hands to follow their laws and protect their species. Some of the things they have to do are just horrific....but they have to do what they have to do!
Our Hero is Marquis silivasi, an ancient warrior. He believes he has found his destiny but when the blood moon appears, it reveals another! If anything COULD go wrong, it DID go wrong for poor Marquis. I just couldn't believe the turn of events! This story kept me captivated from the beginning to the end! There are twists and turns that made my head spin! This is a very fast paced and entertaining read! It is NOT for the faint of heart! If you LOVE dark fantasy, you absolutely MUST read Blood Awakening!! It is certainly at the top of my vampire food chain!!

And you didn’t think Tessa dawn could get any better?
Blood Awakenings is a phenomenal sequel to an incredible series!

Marquis continues to be tormented by the death of his brother, Shelby. As he yells out in a moment of overwhelming grief – he awakens one of the last Celestial beings that still exist. Ciopori is the woman of his dreams and the bond the two share is tangible.

Through black magic, the Dark Ones manage to manipulate the Blood Curse and Marquis’ destiny.

Thanks to the ever curious and resourceful brother, Nachari – and a surprisingly useful talent no one knew our lovable Braden possessed – things are set right – to a point.

With the birth of his son – he must fulfill the Blood Curse and sacrifice his first born – but honor and the love of his fallen, innocent younger brother a few months earlier make him defy The Blood! As this book comes full circle for this ‘family’ – I finished it with tears streaming down my cheeks – the love, honor and most of all understanding was what draws you in and what you fall in love with with this family.

Definitely a must read for adult vampire fiction fanatics!

From my experience with books, the second book in a lot of series is just kinda eh. So, I went into this book not expecting the greatness that was in the first book, Blood Destiny. Holy cow, was I wrong!! I thought I loved Marquis in the first book, on my, I simply fell in love with him in this book. So well written, and just all around awesome. I also really started to love the Dark Ones. Boy are they bad!! Thank you Tessa for another outstanding read!!

“I knew if any would try to follow me, it would be you. If any would stop living, it would be you. If any would lose his way, it would be you."
Marquis Silivasi, despite being a "loner, an ancient vampire known to be merciless, harsh, and unforgiving," saved this story for me.

In this second book of the Blood Curse series, Tessa Dawn doesn't disappoint with her starkly wild descriptions of a brutal vampire world where the only glimmer of hope is for the cursed ones to find their mates and continue their bloodlines...or just continue their bloodlines... by any means possible

So, you have the Dark Ones and the dark-haired, but equally vamp sons of Jadon (who can walk in the light). Though details are different, there are some similarities, as other readers have mentioned, to another series: Christine Feehan's Dark series [Carpathians]. When you picture the heroes of this series, think...
description
Both series present males who are mega alpha and whose salvation almost solely depends on finding a mate. Both depict enemies who are their evil counterparts, and both need and/or desire human woman who have "something" in their blood.

However, the surprising differences are in the violence and characterization of the enemy. Unlike Feehan, Tessa Dawn puts considerable focus on the enemy's world and hierarchy of evil. The enemy is almost on literal, equal ground with his "good" adversary, and as a reader, one can certainly understand the enemy's plight, if not sympathize with the brutality he uses to enact his own survival, dominance, and vengeance.

I think the split between the two sides, good and evil, each one having its own plot and characterization, creates two stories that run parallel, opposite even, but having the same source of conflict, albeit different reactions to it.

This is not to say that the main plot isn't centered upon a romantic couple, mates, who have to fight to stay together or find common ground. Maruis Silivasi's mate is Ciopori Demir, a virtual sleeping beauty who appeared in his dreams well before she appeared to him. Marquis and Ciopori hit a snag in their "love at first sight" romance, and this leaves Marquis to deal with inner conflict of honor, loyalty, vengeance and personal control.

Marquis ultimately gets the spotlight even though he may share it, and I found his duality fascinating, the tortured man and the badass defender, who doggedly eliminated threats and rightly squelched affronts to his power.

The only thing his heroine, Ciopori, did notably was share Old World values with Marquis and exhibit good judgment, at one point. Otherwise, she was kind of wooden, not carved out all the way. I didn't know why she loved Marquis other than the dreams of him, or the fact that he was a powerful soldier, yadda yadda yadda. She insta-loved and then solely existed for him. To be fair, Marquis insta-loved her too. Yet, unlike Marquis, Ciopori didn't have an interesting background or things to make her unique. Just a pretty princess. Fortunately, these two have scenes where their devotion to each other was given some bittersweet exchanges, which made me root for them in the end.

In any case, this one kept me more involved than the first book. It escalated the conflict. The details were gruesome and addictive. I should have been ashamed for being grossly engaged in the villains' salacious shenanigans, while grinning widely and appreciatingly for the Silivasi brothers, (their sovereign)the hot Napolean Mondragon, and the sparse, but wickedly teasing steam scenes.

And I still say, for me, the hero saved the story. Marquis turned out to be a deliciously sexy, unfailingly honorable, Old Word vamp hero. I like a my vampires this way, at least...some of the time:)

Happy Reading

Big Warning to potential readers: If violence/snakes/rape scenes bother you, then this book is most likely not for you.

Overall Rating: 4.5 Stars

Character Development - 4 Stars: Characters are very likeable (except for the dark vampires). The light vampires are all endearing to the reader in their own different ways. The violent/evil scenes are necessary and the author does a good job in portraying how evil the dark vampires really are. I deducted 1 star as I would like to see a little more background and history stories behind each light vampire and their destinies.

World Building - 4 Stars:The vampires being split into two types and how vampires are actually in this book -- feral, animal, and descendants from Celestial Beings -- are quite unique, especially in this age where vampire books are very popular. I've always liked Greek Mythology and like how Tessa Dawn have immersed this in her world.

Plot - 4.5 stars:Lots of twists and turns that made the page a book turner for me. Character dialogue was entertaining. I really like the plot in this book. Definitely darker than the 1st book and this one delves deeper into the dark ones' world.

Summary:
This book certainly has dark/violent scenes, but really, it's necessary to show the dark vampires' evil nature. Otherwise, the book brings a lot more "light" to it with the funny, entertaining dialogue, unique and interesting characters, and quite a bit of suspense and intrigue, making the reader flip each page just to see what happens next. Tessa Dawn did a great job with this book -- it's even better than the 1st one -- and I am looking forward to her next books even more.
