Nth time reading, my rating still haven't changed. I enjoyed the characters, the setting & the mystery. I'm biased because this is the book that I grew up reading, again & again. it's never disappoint me yet so 5 stars it is!

While very much sticking with the Phantom of the Opera theme, the story also seems to have been very heavily inspired by Yukito Ayatsuji’s The Decagon House Murders, a classic Japanese locked-room murder mystery novel. Would’ve given three stars, save for all the annoying fanservice scenes, particularly the ones involving deceased victims. Could’ve definitely done without those.

Very traditional whodunnit with a dozen characters -- in this case, members of a high school drama club -- trapped on an island with a murderer.

I would have liked a little more character development, particularly of the "detective" slacker boy. His transformation from goomba to bright, confident authority figure seems abrupt and unconvincing without more explanation than first exposure to crime.

Overall it was an entertaining first installment of a mystery series, and I look forward to seeing more of the friendship between the two main characters, which here is years old but lacks detail.

A manga about a serial murder case, which is based on/pays homage to The Phantom of the Opera! What more can I ask for?

Many years ago The Opera House Murders offered me the first taste from the Kindaichi Case Files series, the chilling murders and the heartbreaking ending of this murder mystery will always stay in my mind.

Although I must admit after re-reading this story, I found some of the plot twists are a bit unrealistic and cliched, and the murderer had relied too heavily on coincidences. Plus the artwork is just...okay-ish for the most part. =__=

Terasa nostalgia apabila baca semula kisah pertama Hajime.

I've been a fan of the anime since years & finally I've decided to read the iconic opera house murder case files. As i was reading it, i was visualising the episode where all this happened. I can surely say that kindaichi shonen no jikenbo is far better than detective conan or any other mystery anime really, it's THAT good.

Mystery/Horror fans give this a try, you won't be dissapointed!!

Fun shin honkaku manga murder mystery. I was pleasantly surprised that the mystery and plot were different from the episode of the recent live action adaptation but I could have done without the graduitous sexualisation of the murder victims.

POR FIN POR FIN POR FIN

Nice to meet you Kindaichi.

Summary:
Hajime Kindaichi is a slacker and a loser by school standards and when his friend Miyuki invites him to do the grunt work for the drama club a mystery happens. When the rehearsal for "Phantom of the Opera" is going on the cast members die like how the characters they are playing die. He has to use the detective skills his grandfather the famous detective Kousuke Kindaichi to solve the mystery of who is killing the actors.

Response:
I love this series. I just love rereading them over again. I have read this book twice now and I still love it.I love the mystery involved in the volume not to mention I personally love the opera "Phantom of the Opera". I also love the anime for this manga. If there is a manga then chances are there is an anime for the series. The animes go along with the mangas pretty well. I would recommend this series to those who love to read mystery and who wants to solve one.

The Kindaichi Case Files to nie... detective Conan a ka Case Closed.
To zresztą ciekawy przypadek niesłusznej pomyłki.

An ex-licensee from Tokyopop. I looked at the price in the US store and it took me by surprise. Ah, well.

Thanks for licensing this, but I'm not able to support the release directly, so I'll wait patiently. Thanks for writing this... Kanari? Is that his last name?

I learned about this being connected to another mystery series, but it's more like a famous descendant sharing traits of the 1st detective. It's quite an interesting volume. A story I regarded as a story with traits like a slasher film got treated like a cursed play. Like that Scottish play. The mystery was pretty interesting, and there's a trick with time that's quite interesting. Set time early, then trick someone into revealing themselves via telling people there's a trap.

I recommend checking this out if you like mystery stories. I found no option for digital versions, but I will welcome a digital edition warmly.

Sexualization of girls (almost all underage)? Check!

Sexualization of female corpses? Check!

Panty fetish? Most likely!

I got the weird “Ick” feeling from the very first few pages, when Miyuki’s skirt flipped over, seemingly for no reason at all, and her very detailed underwear was shown. Not necessary at all. Ew.

Again showing underwear, but this time on the corpse of an underage girl. How fun and definitely not disturbing at all!

The other corpses, that of Harumi and the teacher, Ogata, were also unnecessarily sexual. Why do we NEED to draw the nipples of a dead girl who’s 16-17? Why do we need to draw a murdered woman naked?

We don’t.

Also, the scene when Kindaichi walked in on Miyuki changing??? It was so random, and not needed. At all. Again, EW.

Only thing that kept me going was the plot.

It was ok. I might have liked it more when I was younger. If I come across more of the series for cheap in the future I might pick them up because a lot of manga ends up being a fast read, but there are other series I want to read more. light and easy way to spend an hour or so.

Preposterous nonsense, but the BEST preposterous nonsense. This series is pure catnip for anybody who read ‘And Then There Were None...’ and thought, “I would like to read a variation on this dozens of times over, but every crime should hinge on planning and timing set finer than a Swiss watch”.

Hajime Kindaichi is the grandson of a famous detective (and I think this might be the only volume where he doesn’t swear on his grandfather’s name to solve a case), but is the classic ‘bored with school because too smart’ archetype. He has his childhood friend Miyuki to stick up for him and she functions as the romantic tension and, to a certain extent, as his Watson as they end up embroiled in murder after murder.

This time, through ridiculous happenstance they find themselves trapped on an island in a hotel fashioned after an opera house practicing for a production of Phantom of the Opera while a real-life phantom lurks behind the scenes. The bodies pile up as Kindaichi tries to solve the mystery.

I love this series. Love it. This first volume wobbles a little, it’s got a lot more ‘have some nudity and panties because you might go read something else’ than later volumes, but the fundamentals are there. Detective Kenmochi, long-suffering sidekick, is introduced and gets completely upstaged at every turn (as he should, it’s not HIS book).

The murder is presaged by a horrible (and insane, seriously it is absolutely crackers here) tragedy in the past and the killer, though doing vile misdeeds, always has a slightly sympathetic lens cast on them. The murders and solution make sense but obviously could never work in the real world.

You could do an entire drinking game with just this series because it has a formula that it uses pretty much every single story. It’s not one that I really tire of though - mysteries are popular for a reason, and Kindaichi IS a great character when he gets going.

I’d say that Case Closed is better written and has better art, but I would read a Kindaichi Case File over the former any day of the week. I really wish they’d start translating them into English again...
