A seemingly “ordinary guy,” Ruben wasn’t a gifted athlete. He didn’t take up the sport of luge until he was 21. Against all odds, four years and a few broken bones later, he was competing in the Calgary Winter Olympics. At the age of 47, at the Vancouver Olympics he became the first person to ever compete in four Winter Olympics in four different decades.
Ruben’s appeared nationally on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and FOX. He’s been featured in Time Magazine, Success Magazine, The New York Times, as well as publications all over the world.
Ruben’s the author of the critically acclaimed book, "The Courage to Succeed" and "The Shortcut." He’s spoken for over 100 Fortune 500 companies and his books have sold over 300,000 copies worldwide.
Ruben lives in Colorado. He enjoys the challenge of climbing Colorado’s fourteen-thousand-foot peaks, sailing and flying.
I typically don't like motivational books. They all read the same. Think Postive Don't take no for an answer Surround yourself with winners Reach for the stars THis book is no exception, in fact the only reason I read this book was because of my current lack of reading material available. So I give it a three cause his story is interesting not because he enlightend me to anything that other motivational books haven't mentioned.
I enjoyed reading this book because it was written by a man who achieved great things, he's not only a motivational speaker, he really pushed his limits. The book is full of quotes which increased my morale but I would have appreciated more "Olympian methods" to succeed.
Systems: “Research done by dr Edwards deming reveals that 94% of all failures occur when a person is not following a proven system… Find a mentor who has done what you aspire to do and then faithfully follow their advice. Follow their system. You’ll be glad you did.” 96
Books: “invariably, as I read the biography, I’d be reminded that when a person on the cover was young, they had been an ordinary person just like I was. It was the struggle that had made them great. Reading biographies gave me hope; hope that I could accomplish great things.” 27
“My dad always said to me, if you read about the lives of people you admire you’ll learn what works and what doesn’t work in life because success leaves clues.”
Goals: “At the Olympic training center we are taught about the importance of writing down our goals every day. Magic happens when you write down goals. Writing out your goals is an act of commitment. When you write out your goals you are actually writing the script to the story of your future.” 75
Cards with two sides for goals: one with the goals (present tense, specific etc)and one with what you are doing today to reach the goals.
You need to embrace change and take action to kill fear. You may feel the fear but take the action anyway.
Goals and perseverance: “a study on goals and perseverance found that 95% of the goals that people set are ultimately achieved, as long as the person didn’t give up” 118
Find the experts and minimize the risk: “Rather, find the experts. Do your due diligence and minimize risk by learning from the best. Then, give yourself a couple of years to learn the basic skills by taking consistent and persistent action. By doing that, in time you will become the expert others turn to for advice. By pursuing excellence in everything you do, you will make your life a masterpiece.” 113
A quick motivational and inspiring read that talks about how not to quit, how to keep going despite the odds, to dream big, and to always rise above. This book had several inspiring quotes and was worth a quick knowledgeable read to squeeze in.
Excellent read!!!! Inspiring! A book that should be read every so often, to encourage you through the bumpy times along the road to success! Thanks Ruben!
If you like the Olympics, you'll love this book. If you like stories about underdogs who succeeded, you'll like this book.
Ruben Gonzalez is a very funny man and his accomplishments are pretty amazing. His dream of making it to the Olympics in a sport that he was to begin at the age of 21 was pretty far-fetched. After going to the Olympics, he didn't set out to cash-in by becoming a motivational speaker. Instead he was asked to speak and people responded so positively that he kept doing it.
I believe that Ruben really hopes others will dream big and make those dreams happen. His story is highly entertaining and has many valuable lessons.
If you are undecided about reading the book, go to YouTube and look for videos of Ruben Gonzalez speaking and let that be your guide for whether this book is for you.
Wow if you ever think you can't do something, think of this dude who made it to the Olympics 3 times. I couldn't think of anything worse than learning how to luge. Broken bones, crashes and cold is not my ideal dream but it was his! Inspiring story to say the least. Love the positivity that is on every page of this book. Do yourself a favour and beg, borrow or steal this book!
An excellent book written in such a straight forward and direct manner that there is no mistaking the passion and zeal the author has for his subject. I found this book inspiring and encouraging with wonderful tools to equip me for the road ahead. I can do anything I desire and set my mind too. "Done Deal".
The Dream, the struggle, the prize. All successful people in any field will go through this process. Ruben demonstrated what it means and how to go through this process.
I loved this story! The author takes up the luge when he's 21 years old. He is told that he is too old, but he's so excited and dreams of being in the Olympics. A great story about having a dream and accomplishing it.
Ruben's story is a funny and inspiring one. I did not feel that his humor came across in his book as much as it does in one of his speaking engagements.
This is a must read. One of the amazing book I've ever read. You want to win and want to know how to!! This book is for you... Just pick it up! Cheers! Be a bulldog! :)
