Winston Churchill (1874-1965, KG 1953) Conservative politician, Prime Minister 1940-5 and 1951-5. Perhaps the most determined and inspirational war leader in Britain's history, it was during that darkest summer of 1940 that Churchill's astonishing oratory seemed to rally the nation, from his opening statement to the House of Commons on May 13th that he had 'nothing to offe ...more

After reading 2 books on Churchill, written by a fan and a admirer, this essay ( not really a biography) was somewhat different. Haffner draws other conclusion on Churchill, he even calls him a fascist in a certain period and reduces his greatness to 2 years (1940/1941). But still even Haffner admirers him. I don't agree with Haffners opinion that Churchill behaviour in the last years of WW2 was unrealistic, his ideas of invading Europe from the South instead of the West so that Stalin wouldn't ...more

Even biographies of minor figures are often extended volumes with lots of pages and unimportant details. This book shows what an effective biography can be like; concise, to the point, very well written and lacking trivial details (I don't now know what Churchill's favorite color was, o no!). And Churchill by no means had a boring, uneventful life, making it even more of an accomplishment to cram it all into a slim book. Photographs and small asides on relevant other people or occurences round o ...more

Not a real "biography" (about 180 pages only) but fascinating insight in the actions and strategic motives of one of the most remarkable actors of the 20th century. Haffner analyzes and doesn't scare from "what if" scenarios, thereby giving us a window in how the current Europe came to be and how it could have looked like if events in those fateful years between 40-45 had taken a different turn. Magnificent.

Smart and insightful biography written by the very gifted German writer Sebastian Haffner, who, not being Jewish nor politically persecuted, decided to leave Germany in 1938 just because of his dislike of Nazism. A very rare case of intelligence and bravery.

The book brings a good overview of the life of the great Winston Churchill. It starts with the relation with his father and follows the events of his life. But sometimes the writing is a bit dry and lacks a certain flow. The positive is, that the book is not very thick and a nice quick read.

I read the German version of Haffner’s excellent biography. The book provides an excellent introduction to the life of Churchill. Highly recommended.

Not just a simple presentation of "the British Bulldog's" life, but also a balanced analysis and interpretation of his actions, with both good and bad consequences, and his troubled times. The only glitch of this biography is that the author little percolates into the personal life of his protagonist, failing to mention, for example, that SWC was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953, being one of the three exclusive non-fiction writers (the others are Theodor Mommsen and Bertrand Russel ...more

An overview of Churchills life rather than an actual biography, this book is easy readable and gives a quick view on the life of a remarkable person. This might be good for those who wonder what the heck this Churchill person was all about, but leaves others hungry for more. Putting myself in the last category, I'm definitely interested in some more detail of Churchills life and the traits that made him so unique in particular. For someone just looking for a flight through the highlights of Sir ...more

Good intro to an amazing man- a bit sophomoric- like a school book- textbook like additions to the text. I am looking for something a little more substantial but not 7 volumes worth....gonna go back to Steve jobs I think...

Although this book provided an overview of Churchill's life, there wasn't a lot of information about Churchill's character or personality. However, the book was quite easy to read and contained useful side notes with additional information.

Sebastian Haffner (the pseudonym for Raimund Pretzel) was a German journalist and author whose focus was the history of the German Reich (1871-1945). His books dealt with the origins and course of the First World War, the failure of the Weimar Republic and the subsequent rise and fall of Nazi Germany under Hitler.

In 1938 he emigrated from Nazi Germany with his Jewish fiancée to London, hardly able
