I almost did not read this book. I am not big on books where the first page says "Present Day" and you know it's going to be a flashback book. I don't mind the flashback-type books TOO much but I figured it would be most of the story and I wasn't sure I wanted to sit through that. I am so glad I did.

A sweet little Christmas read and a lesson in a child's perceptions not always being correct.
Remembering Christmas is one of those books that though, simple in it's telling, packs a powerful punch emotionally. Dan Walsh proves yet again that he is a master storyteller, with his latest release of forgiveness and family.

In Remembering Christmas, Dan Walsh writes with humor and a fun bit of attitude - and still writes a heartwarming tale. The story delighted me, and one twist completely surprised me. Realistic and lovable characters - even shallow Rick - and the refreshing Florida beach town setting make this a memorable Christmas story. I loved Dan's previous novels, The Unfinished Gift, The Homecoming, and The Deepest Waters. Remembering Christmas is sure to please his fans and to enthrall new readers as well.

It was okay for a seasonal read.
I have been reading a lot of death and mayhem lately so I was lucky enough to dig this out of the reading pile and get to it. Just the cure for a respite from cars blowing up, end of the world scenarios and terrorists, unless of course you count nice old ladies coming into bookstores terrorists; they come in all shapes and sizes you know.

The beginning of this book was interesting. It is a story of a professional who left small town Florida after finishing college and made a new life for himself on his own terms. His stepdad becomes very ill and his mother asks him to return home to help run the Christian bookstore, so he reluctantly gives up his ski vacation to help his mother out.

This story was one that I found truly heartwarming. I bought it because I'd read other books by the same author and enjoyed them a lot. Normally stories that have a Christmas theme seem a bit sappy to me, but I decided to try it anyway. I thought it was cool that the story was set in 1980 since that was during my childhood. The hero, Rick, is introduced as a frustrating, inconsiderate, self-centered man - whose attitudes and actions aren't so unfamiliar after all. I almost stopped reading this at the ten percent mark because the MC was such a jerk. But I'm glad I stuck with it, as he became a different person as the story progressed. The whole transformation thing was a bit implausible, but I don't really care. I'm such a sucker for happy ever after stories.

I really did like this Christmas novel. If I could I would give it a 3 1/2 star rating. The characters were realistic, likeable and interesting. It is a christian novel so there are several references to being saved, and that was fine with me. Most reviewers gave this a higher rating than I did, and although I thought the book was good, it just wasn't a page turner for me and it was a little predictable.

Though it's a serious look at family relations and growing up long after we become adults, there are many light moments in this book. It's a story of a young man who comes home to help his mother when his stepfather becomes ill, and the pages are full of details from a time not so long ago. I was in the mood for a good Christmas story and was blessed with this great one. The story is as warm and real as the book cover. The character development was drawn as skillfully and realistically as portraits, even for the secondary characters. I even shed a few tears for this young Scrooge who grew a heart the hard way. Please don't be scared off by reviewers who compare Walsh to Nicholas Sparks--I sure can't see it--Walsh is so much better. I definitely want to read more books by Dan Walsh.
Fast reading and well written as is typical of Dan Walsh's work. If you enjoy Christian fiction you should enjoy it. The title is somewhat misleading. It has a Christmas element, but that really is just a part of it. Romance is also a minor aspect of the story. If you're looking for passionate romance, this isn't it.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked all the characters, and the setting . . . especially the fact that it was set in 1980. While I don't have particular memories of that year (I was only 5 at the time this book was set), I could practically smell the Naugahyde and see the fashions these characters might have been wearing! I can definitely see myself reading this book over and over again! It was so good! I loved watching throughout the book as the Lord made changes in Rick's overall attitude and softening his hardened heart. I don't know what else to say that wouldn't spoil the book for anyone who hasn't read it, but the characters were charming, the Book Nook was warm and welcoming, and it was awesome to watch God work in the lives of all the characters, not just Rick. This was a really good book with a good storyline and had me in tears the last part of the book.
Why give it only three stars? There are errors in it. Crazy errors like:
"And wanna here something almost as crazy?" Really? Here?
And another one:
She through her arms around him... What??? Through? (Not sure where this appeared in the book so not quoted.)
Plus other sentences with errors.
I really like this author but hate reading books with such gross errors.
I will continue to read his books. Hopefully ...more
