I almost did not read this book. I am not big on books where the first page says "Present Day" and you know it's going to be a flashback book. I don't mind the flashback-type books TOO much but I figured it would be most of the story and I wasn't sure I wanted to sit through that. I am so glad I did.

I won't go into all the details of what the book is about. You can read that in the synopsis or in other reviews. What I will say is that this was one of the most moving stories I've read in a very,

Remembering Christmas is one of those books that though, simple in it's telling, packs a powerful punch emotionally. Dan Walsh proves yet again that he is a master storyteller, with his latest release of forgiveness and family.

What I love about Mr. Walsh's books is how deep all of his characters are, and there is always more than what first meets the eye. Every character is complex and miles deep, each with their own struggle, and yet Mr. Walsh weaves all the ends in beautifully (yet not painle

In Remembering Christmas, Dan Walsh writes with humor and a fun bit of attitude - and still writes a heartwarming tale. The story delighted me, and one twist completely surprised me. Realistic and lovable characters - even shallow Rick - and the refreshing Florida beach town setting make this a memorable Christmas story. I loved Dan's previous novels, The Unfinished Gift, The Homecoming, and The Deepest Waters. Remembering Christmas is sure to please his fans and to enthrall new readers as well. ...more

I have been reading a lot of death and mayhem lately so I was lucky enough to dig this out of the reading pile and get to it. Just the cure for a respite from cars blowing up, end of the world scenarios and terrorists, unless of course you count nice old ladies coming into bookstores terrorists; they come in all shapes and sizes you know.
Dan Walsh delivers a very twist on a classic theme and does it with a very nice deft touch and plenty of panache. These are not words I usually get to use in my

Rick Denton is a successful CPA, striving to climb the corporate ladder. His father left when he was a boy, and over the years Rick has created an image of his father and what their happy reunion would be. He rejected his stepfather, Art, and distanced himself from his mother, Leanne, and has little contact with them. When his mother calls to ask for Rick's help running their little bookstore after his stepfather suffers from an aneurysm he reluctantly returns to his hometown. When he encounters ...more

The beginning of this book was interesting. It is a story of a professional who left small town Florida after finishing college and made a new life for himself on his own terms. His stepdad becomes very ill and his mother asks him to return home to help run the Christian bookstore, so he reluctantly gives up his ski vacation to help his mother out.

I was liking it until about 1/2 way through, and then it got religious. When the stepdad had dangerously low blood pressure and a Bishop put his hand

Rick Denton, career minded, business oriented, climbing the ladder to success is thankful to have left his childhood home in Florida years ago. Rick's father left the family when Rick was very young, and Rick blames his mother for the loss. He hates it even more when his mother remarries his stepdad Art who tries to father Rick, when Rick still longs for his own father. Wanting no relationship with Art, Rick barely keeps in touch with his mother and stepfather.

As the story opens, Rick Denton is looking back on the holiday season of 1980. At that time, he was successful with his career, and living his life on on his own terms. When his mother calls on Thanksgiving weekend, begging him to come home after his step father suffers what at first appears to be a stoke, Rick is more than a little reluctant. He has never liked Art and always resented his presence in his life, despite the fact that Rick's father abandoned him when he was 12. He has also always ...more

Remembering Christmas is written in a simplistic style, and yet for the message that it delivers, flowery language is not really needed. Rick, the main character, not only remembers a particular Christmas, but unearths repressed memories that make him realize just how much he had forgotten - about his mother, his father and especially his step-father, Art. When Rick has to go home to take care of his mother Leanne and Art's store, after Art suffers a brain aneurysm, he must confront these memori ...more

One cold winter in Florida Rick will come to terms with many things in his life and learn more then he bargained for when he found out that his stepfather was in hospital in critical condition and he came home to help his Mom with their business "The Book Nook".

Remembering Christmas, a Novel, by Dan Walsh, Revell, 2011, Hardcover, 272 Pages, ISBN-13: 978-0800719791, $15.99

JD nervously paced, peeking around the corner to look for Art who had never been late one time this past year with his Egg McMuffin. He heard his belly rumbling, but this morning he needed “the heat from Art’s coffee to take the chill out of his bones” more than the food.

He had come to count on Art’s generosity over the past year af

In Remembering Christmas, Dan Walsh has written a story that’s sure to be a holiday classic. The story opens when Rick Denton, a successful (and self-centered) individual, receives a phone call from his mother asking for his help in the bookstore she and her husband own. Rick’s stepfather, Art, has suffered a brain aneurysm and is hovering between life and death.
Grudgingly , Rick travels to the small town of Sea Breeze, Florida, grumbling all the while about giving up his ski vacation. He avoid

This story was one that I found truly heartwarming. I bought it because I'd read other books by the same author and enjoyed them a lot. Normally stories that have a Christmas theme seem a bit sappy to me, but I decided to try it anyway. I thought it was cool that the story was set in 1980 since that was during my childhood. So many of the events mentioned in the novel I actually remembered. I loved how the author showed several perspectives, and how the hero's heart softened over time because of ...more

Remembering Christmas is a life-affirming, hopeful Christmas story. The hero, Rick, is introduced as a frustrating, inconsiderate, self-centered man - whose attitudes and actions aren't so unfamiliar after all. He learns some valuable lessons about compassion and understanding as Walsh twists all the characters' lives into one lovely braid of a book.

For some, the holiday season is spent in hospital halls or out on the streets, homeless. And yet hope remains, and God is at work even in the suffer

A wonderful Christmas story. A story of redemption, charm, sweet characters, overcoming fears, and finding what's most important in life... Family and God.

“Charlie, how would you treat people if you knew you didn't have to fix them? If you knew that was God's job, and all he was asking of you was show them his love, maybe tell them some things he wanted them to know?” (pg 141)

I almost stopped reading this at the ten percent mark because the MC was such a jerk. But I'm glad I stuck with it, as he became a different person as the story progressed. The whole transformation thing was a bit implausible, but I don't really care. I'm such a sucker for happy ever after stories.
I had hoped that I would connect more with the time period in which this was set, being a child of the 80's, but I didn't recognise much of the setting. Perhaps this was because I was a child, and wou

I really did like this Christmas novel. If I could I would give it a 3 1/2 star rating. The characters were realistic, likeable and interesting. It is a christian novel so there are several references to being saved, and that was fine with me. Most reviewers gave this a higher rating than I did, and although I thought the book was good, it just wasn't a page turner for me and it was a little predictable.

The story has some romance, some family dynamics that everyone has....divorce, single parent

This is a great read and not just for the holidays.
Though it's a serious look at family relations and growing up long after we become adults, there are many light moments in this book. It's a story of a young man who comes home to help his mother when his stepfather becomes ill, and the pages are full of details from a time not so long ago. A fast pace with well-drawn characters, I was charmed.

Walsh helps you to see your family, and even strangers, in a different light. Remembering Christmas is

I was in the mood for a good Christmas story and was blessed with this great one. The story is as warm and real as the book cover. The character development was drawn as skillfully and realistically as portraits, even for the secondary characters. I even shed a few tears for this young Scrooge who grew a heart the hard way. Please don't be scared off by reviewers who compare Walsh to Nicholas Sparks--I sure can't see it--Walsh is so much better. I definitely want to read more books by Dan Walsh.

Fast reading and well written as is typical of Dan Walsh's work. If you enjoy Christian fiction you should enjoy it. The title is somewhat misleading. It has a Christmas element, but that really is just a part of it. Romance is also a minor aspect of the story. If you're looking for passionate romance, this isn't it.

"Remembering Christmas" is in a way a modern Prodigal Son saga -- the story of a man getting right with God, his family, and himself.

Set in November 1980, Rick Denton is pretty satisfied, a well-paid accountant who gladly lives alone. Though once he prepares himself for an well-deserved vacation, he receives a call from his mother Leanne regarding his stepfather's-- Art's aneurysm emergency, pleading Rick to come back home and help out in running the family-owned Christian bookstore, in which Art and Leanne are currently absent from. Although very uninterested, he agrees to come down to Florida and meets interesting residents ...more

This is my second Dan Walsh book, having just finished "Keeping Christmas" recently. While "Keeping Christmas" was a little better from start to finish, I thought that "Remembering Christmas" had an extremely strong second half and might even resonate with me longer. What both books have in common is that there are several moments of emotional impact brought on by how well Dan Walsh brings his characters to life. For a lot of the book, I felt like Rick wasn't the most likable

Rick, a Charlotte CPA, responds to his mother's urgent request for assistance running the family's Seabreeze, Florida, bookstore when his stepfather falls ill. I really enjoyed this book. I liked all the characters, and the setting . . . especially the fact that it was set in 1980. While I don't have particular memories of that year (I was only 5 at the time this book was set), I could practically smell the Naugahyde and see the fashions these characters might have been wearing! I love when an author includes so many details that set the scene perfectly like that!
I think my favourite part was the message: that even though it's God who ultimately change

I can definitely see myself reading this book over and over again! It was so good! I loved watching throughout the book as the Lord made changes in Rick's overall attitude and softening his hardened heart. I don't know what else to say that wouldn't spoil the book for anyone who hasn't read it, but the characters were charming, the Book Nook was warm and welcoming, and it was awesome to watch God work in the lives of all the characters, not just Rick. I'm purposely being vague here, but this is ...more

This was a really good book with a good storyline and had me in tears the last part of the book.
Why give it only three stars? There are errors in it. Crazy errors like:
"And wanna here something almost as crazy?" Really? Here?
And another one:
She through her arms around him... What??? Through? (Not sure where this appeared in the book so not quoted.)
Plus other sentences with errors.
I really like this author but hate reading books with such gross errors.
I will continue to read his books. Hopefully
