Univ. of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. A guidebook, for psychologists, to cognitive treatment strategies for bipolar disorder. Presents numerous techniques for management of the mania and hypomania. Explicates methods for helping couples and families deal with the disorder, and how it affects the lives of bipolar individuals. Bipolar Disorder--therapy.
The authors of this book have offered an empathetic and highly useful guide to working with individuals who suffer from bipolar / manic depression. They emphasize understanding what each individual patient needs and grant you with a clear understanding of the significant hopelessness and emotions that accompany this disorder.
For a change though, rather than focusing just on the psychopharmacological treatment options that are out there, they get down into the other distinguishing factors. The authors help to explain how drug and alcohol abuse often accompany this disroder, and the psychosocial and identity issues that will always complicate your treatment plans. They also address important issues such as self-disclosure and bipolar disorder.
All in all, I found this a useful and compassionate - but it was a little dry. I will however agree with others when they say that this is a long overdue guide for therapists working with individuals struggling with this disorder.
This book was very interesting. I know someone who has bipolar, and I didn't know much about the disorder. I was fascinated with learning about it from the therapist's/ case study approach. I could only read a few pages at a time, because it was pretty heavy and unfamiliar, as well as emotionally draining for me as I considered the person I know and love who has bipolar. I would recommend this as something intellectually challenging, but not impossible to read and comprehend.
Muy últil para entender un poco por todo lo que pasan este tipo de personas. Se plantean soluciones realistas y esperanzadoras para los enfermos y familiares.
