Book Review
Wonder’s First Race
By Joanna Campbell
Even though I love horses, this book didn’t look exciting. But you can’t judge a book by its cover so I decided to read it. It turns out, I loved this book. “Wonder’s First Race” is written by Joanna Campbell and its realistic fiction. It was so full of excitement it was hard to put down.
The main characters are Ashleigh, Linda, Brad, Townsend Prince and Wonder. The setting is in Kentucky, just outside of Lexington. The conflict is Brad. He is me

Eh. It was good. Like I said in my last review, the writing is more for younger audiences. The plot is good- but it seems to be repeating itself...
Something bad happens to Wonder, but by the end it's always resolved. I understand this is how some books work but on one book there should be a problem and at the end it isn't fixed, instead, it should lead the readers on to the next book to figure out what happens. THEN on the next the problem becomes fixed. Shake it up a bit!

Though despite everythi

A great series for tweens that love horses and/or are interested in horseback riding or racing. Teaches about the struggles of working with animals and the benefits.

Read it in the 1990s but can't remember it. Sorry.

My favorite part was when Wonder won the Kentucky Derby. My least favorite part was when Brad was being mean to Caroline, and said that Wonder wasn't going to win any races, and then when she did, he said that he always knew she would. My favorite character was Ashleigh, because she always believed that Wonder could be amazing at races, and didn't give up hope on her when she got injured, or wasn't doing very well. My least favorite character was Brad, because he was mean to Caroline, and was sm ...more

This review is written by Clio (age 6) and may contain spoilers.

Wonder wins her first race, but in her second race she gets breezed too much in her workout in the day before and she doesn't win it. And when Brad Townsend, the owner's son, a jerk, wants to ride Wonder on an icy track, Wonder ends up bruising her ankle and pulling some shoulder muscles in her left side. Will Ashleigh be able to save Wonder? Will Wonder still be able to race?

I love, love, LOVED this book! Finally Ashleigh and Wonder's hard work pays off and Wonder gets to become the racehorse she was meant to be. But with Ashleigh's dreams finally becoming realized comes a few problems that both girl and horse have to deal with, ie: snobby owner's interfering son, dirty racing jockeys, and the overall skepticism of the people who had no faith in the tough little filly and the girl who never doubted her!

I loved it! I love horses, especially thoroughbreds! I love horse racing. but most of all I love the horses.
Even though this book is fiction, I learned a lot.
