Adventures In La-La Land #1

The Ladies Temperance Club's Farewell Tour

Rate this book
Vonda Mae Ables could never hurt a soul. Now she’s on the lam in a huge RV, with her best friends, gallons of Chardonnay and a stiff in the freezer. Vonda has suffered her alcoholic boyfriend's abuse for twenty years. But when she finally stands up for herself, she overdoes it and crushes his skull with a football trophy. Rather than turn herself in, she enlists her friends to help ditch the body. They stash the boyfriend in the freezer of his humongous RV and take off for Arizona, planning a quiet desert burial. Unfortunately, the plan goes more sideways with every mile. Vonda finally finds a likely place to plant the dead SOB, but now he's frozen solid and stuck in the freezer. Exhausted from their day of digging and unsuccessfully trying to extricate him, the women stop at a local cafe. While they're drinking dinner, a gang of Harley-riding repo guys makes off with the RV and a Good Samaritan reports the theft. When the police arrive to investigate Vonda panics, knowing if the cops recover the RV and discover what's in the freezer, she might have to turn that old trophy on herself. Imagine THELMA AND LOUISE meets Lucy & Ethel -- It's about good friends, good wine, manslaughter and the lengths we’ll go for those we care about.

Listen up ladies, we’ve all been in Vonda’s shoes. We’ve been saddled with a selfish SOB and once or twice, we’ve wondered what would happen if we offed him. ;) Vonda only did what came natural and her best friends are there to help her get rid of the body. No body, no crime, right?

Thus begins a rib-tickling adventure featuring three woman, a deceased deadbeat and the authorities on the hunt for the RV they’re riding in. The author, who is a man, does an incredible job getting us inside the head of Vonda and her two girlfriends. I was really impressed.

I love road trip books and this one is hilarious from start to finish. I laughed all the way through the book and I can’t wait to read the next installment!

If you like Thelma and Louise, you’ll love this book!

Favorite Character: Vonda. I love how matter-of-fact she is. She’s a fun no-nonsense kind of woman who get herself into some sticky situations. Luckily, she has her best friends at her side or else she’d lose it. She reminds me of Thelma from Thelma and Louise, only a bit wackier.

Favorite Quote: “Y’see officer,” she launched into a character centered somewhere between Gracie Allen and Ethel Mertz. “Vonda might have been driving and all, but I’m the reason she had to swerve.”

My Rating: 5 stars

The Ladies Temperance Club is made up of three middle-aged women who have been friends for years and share a love of wine and hatred of Jack Thibideau, the man Vonda has been putting up with for years. Jack, an insurance scam artist and good for nothing worm on practically every level, had convinced hard partying Vonda that when she lost her job as a flight attendant to make room for younger ladies years ago, that she was no longer marketable to other men. When Jack suggests he'd rather have his skull caved in than say hi to her friends---the hate is mutual--she takes him up on his offer, finally reaching the end of her rope with him.

What else are friends for than to cover your back? Francine and Kay take charge of cleaning up the scene and the ladies dump Jack's body in the specially designed chest freezer that's in the basement of the large expensive RV Jack owns, and hit the road to get far away from the area to dump the body. So begins a hilarious adventure.

The police are looking for Jack due to twenty-seven insurance scam warrants. Fish, a repo man/bounty hunter/lawyer and his two employees are sent by the bank to repossess the RV and set out on their Harleys, following the credit card trail. We also follow their hijinks.

A friend enthusiastically told me I had to read this book that she'd found by accident. If she hadn't gushed about it, I'm sorry to say I wouldn't have looked beyond the book's title, and would have missed out on a very good read. I was immediately sucked in by the characters and am happy to say this extends through so many we meet throughout the book; the characters come alive. The situations they encounter and how they deal with it, both the women and the men, are flat out fun to read about.

I was thrown a little bit by trying to figure out how old the women are. They are considered middle-aged but would appear to be in their early sixties based on the year one of them graduated. It isn't until the end of the book that you realize the story took place before the housing market tanked, putting them in their fifties.

At thirty percent into the book I called my friend to thank her for the recommendation. At fifty percent I was calling my sister to tell her she had to read this. I'd love to see this made into a movie.

Certainly not great literature but any book that makes me laugh out loud deserves 4 stars. Full of dry and sarcastic dialogue, hilarious situations and true friendship.

Bursts of laughter punctuated the quiet of our household as I devoured chapter after chapter of this hilarious book into the wee hours of the morning. It takes a lot to get a really good laugh out of me, but author Jeff Lee did it with ease!

Meet Jack Thibideau, the boyfriend who meets his demise early on in the book. Jack hates large women, mousy women, cops, game show hosts, most teachers, actors, professionals, guys who make more than him, guys who make less than him, and a whole bunch of other things. Now let me introduce you to the Ladies Temperance Club members. There’s Vonda, Jack’s girlfriend, who considers herself a leader in fashion - though her friends might not completely agree with this; Kay, Vonda’s closest friend for more years than she cares to remember; and Francine – a large, honest woman who lives life to the fullest and don’t give a crap about what anybody thinks. They love their wine, they love each other, but they’re not too fond of Jack.

Ingeniously written, with plenty of wit, side-splitting humor and double entendres, the journey these three extraordinary women undertake, isn’t only about burying a body in the desert, but also explores how far the best of friends will go for each other. Trust me, when you’re in a bit of a pickle, like oh….bludgeoning your abusive, cheating scum of a man to death, these are the ladies you’ll want on your side. And they’re a riot to boot!

If the blurb didn’t get you rushing out to your nearest bookstore or over to Amazon to get your hands on this gem of a book, then most likely nothing will. But here’s an excerpt which I hope would convince you:

Of course she felt bad about what happened; few people on the planet actually deserved to be done in by another, and there were miles of difference between Jack’s simple, larcenous no-goodnikness and, say, Hitler, Saddam Hussein or your everyday, run-of-the-mill corporate raider.

But looking at it in the light of a new morning, Vonda managed to convince herself that physically removing Jack Thibideau from the census rolls was really an act of self-defense.

Because after living with that bitter, abusive, impotent, alcoholic and thieving bastard for twenty years, it was really a case of kill or be killed. If Vonda hadn’t exercised a little extreme prejudice on Jack, she would have had to do herself in, to finally be free of his special brand of long-term charm, goodness and warmth.

And like those old Highway Safety public service commercials used to say, “The life you save may be your own.”

Admittedly, the title of the book didn’t grab me and if I hadn’t read the blurb, I probably would’ve given it a miss. But by the end of the book, it felt as though I’ve been on one heck of an adventure with some of the most stunningly real characters – no wait, make those ‘friends’ - I’ve ever only come across in few other books. We’re talking supreme entertainment here.

“The Ladies Temperance Club’s Farewell Tour” exceeded my highest expectations and therefore I enthusiastically recommend it with a richly-deserved 5 stars!

This book should come with the attached warning…”Do not attempt to read this novel whilst drinking any form of liquid; it is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud and spurt the contents of your drink over the nearest available clothing/electronic equipment/intended mother-in-law.

I love a book that makes me smile; I love a book that makes me laugh…This book made me embarrass myself on a crowded commuter train…I snort when I laugh that much, what can I tell you?

Meet the three female rogues…Vonda, Fifty something and making every day count for something... including murdering the low life son-of-a-sleazebag that has made her life intolerable for twenty years. The miserly, scamming, dysfunctional, short, nasty piece of work named Jack Thibideau. He earned his early demise, and then some.

Francine: Ahhh…my personal favorite, innocent, loyal to a fault, funny without attempting to be and just plain lovable. Watching her evolve is a joy to read. She is one of life’s survivors seemingly a quiet soul with no insight in how to stand up for herself.

Meet Kay; Smart mouthed, sassy, and a friend to the end.

These three diverse women take off in an RV that takes up a city block…on a journey to lay the body of Jack Thibideau, stiff {for the first time on his sicko life}, and slowing freezing in the underbelly of the van somewhere where he can defrost and decompose in peace {Not that he deserves it.}

The journey is a delight; author Jeff Lee has drawn each and every character with an artist’s eye for detail, dialogue, and clever characterizations. His observations of people are acerbic and acutely accurate.

Every character no matter how minor the role they play becomes clearly visible to the reader, you see them, hear them and in many cases smell them as they are intertwined in a cleverly plotted fast-paced delight of a book.

What pleases me even more with Author Lee’s work is that the plot is carefully drawn with seeming ease, comedic writing is hard to maintain, the timing has to be perfect and seemingly effortless... yet it it is one of the most difficult genres to write well.

This is a gem. Written beautifully.

The evolution of the characters is paced well, each of our central figures begin to change; they grow along with the story. I care about these women; I want the ending to see each of them happy. That is the mark of an Author that shines…someone that stands out from the crowd; Jeff Lee made me care for these folks. He is a fine writer, and I have no hesitation in giving this a 5 star rating, and happily recommending it to all those who enjoy a damned good laugh and more importantly a good story well told.

The Ladies Temperance Club’s Farewell Tour by Jeff Lee

This review should be a 4.5

Vonda Mae Ables, a woman of that certain age, has finally had enough; enough of her boyfriend Jacks lying, his impotence, cheating his old football teammates for cash and rescuing incontinent dying dogs. When the straw finally breaks the camel’s back, Vonda takes action and does so spectacularly; with what some may say is with malice and aforethought, a whole load of wine in her system and a football trophy. Now she has to worry about being a murderess.
However, she has girlfriends. Very close girlfriends. You know the kind. The ones who will have your back come hell or high water. Moreover, they come up with a scheme…a wonderful, crazy, spectacular scheme involving the dead body, a bus sized recreational vehicle, a deep freezer and a trip, A Farewell Trip to be precise.
This book is going to delight all sorts of readers. If you love the works of Carl Hiaasen (the early years) or Tim Dorsey you are going to truly enjoy this novel.
What a delight finally to be able to read a great kick-butt book and have the main characters be an intriguing age. I have been moaning repeatedly that I want to read something about someone around my age and who isn’t afraid to own it. Well I finally found an author that is willing to write something for the ‘rest’ of us and I for one will be shouting it from the roof tops. The antics of this trio of females and the trio of males who are after them

The characters are so realistic, that I swear Jeff Lee was writing about my girlfriends and me. The dialogue is crisp, wonderfully snarky, up to date and very fresh. Jeff Lee has spent a lot of time making sure that all of the characters, from the main ones right down to the tertiary characters, are all very well fleshed out, with each one having a unique voice and distinct personality. The prose is natural and flowing and is a delight to read. There is just enough description of the scenery to enlighten but not so much that it annoys and bores you.
I think you will be spending a lot of your time apologizing to the people around you for all the laughing out loud you are going to be doing.

Amazon based on the types of books I sometimes order recommended this book to me, and normally I would have just passed this one up, but something about it called to me and I’m very glad I listened.

I loved this book. For anyone who has read Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum novels, it is similar in style to those, just slightly less content.
It tells the story of 3 friends who form The Ladies Temperance Club. One of them, Vonda, has lived with her abusive alcoholic boyfriend for several years. It's a strange relationship. He also hates her friends. She's finally had enough though and whacks him over the head with one of his beloved trophies and kills him. Her friends stand by her and they hide his body in the freezer of his RV and then go off on a Thelma and Louise type trip. This is where the fun starts.

Her husband was a fraudster and the repo company on their Harley Davidsons are after him and his RV. They are tracking the RV across the state and come into some amusing scrapes along the way. Each time you think they're catching the girls up, something happens which delays them. It's such fun! Then they do catch them up and take the RV, along with the body in the freezer. Although the girls don't know that it's repo guys that have took it and panic, not wanting to report it stolen as they don't want the police to find what's in it.

It really is a fun and light hearted read. I believe there is to be a sequel to the book and I can't wait to read it. I think the book is well written, humourous and you keep wanting to read more.

Really, I want to give this one a 4.5, not just a plain old 4.

I loved this one. A quick, humourous, and fun read. Jeff Lee has voice! Some of the things his character's said just cracked me right up.

Three say-it-like-is friends (well, Kay is still leaning on her say-it-like-it-is trailing wheels) end up on an RV road trip that will either bring them all closer (as if that's possible) or bring them closer to incarceration. Vonda, accidentally, sort-of-on-purpose, kills her awful hubby. While puking up her regrets, her two friends clean up the mess and stuff the body in RV's freezer and are off before anyone can think twice about the wiseness of fleeing. Unfortunately, Vonda's hubby didn't bother paying the last 6 months worth of payments on the RV and soon the repo men are on the gals' tail, sure to make this little adventure a whole lot more interesting.

With characters larger than life on a collision course with each other you can't help but wonder how it is all going to end. (But I won't tell you, you have to read it yourself.)

I can't wait to read more of Jeff Lee's books. They are one-of-a-kind when it comes to literary amusement.

I wish the author hadn’t used the “Thelma and Louise meets Lucy & Ethel” line in his description. Then in a rare burst of creativity, I could have (at least in theory), come up with the line myself. It’s the perfect description. Participating in some female bonding while on the run (like Thelma and Louise), the group of friends who call themselves The Ladies Temperance Club keeps getting into situations that are very much Lucy and Ethel. The murder hanging over their head provides conflict and tension, but the humor in the situations the ladies get into is what sets this book apart. When it’s all over, someone may have some ‘splaining to do.

Absolutely loved this book, my first introduction to Jeff Lee. What a hoot, could not stop laughing. It was so very real in so many ways, if you have ever lived in California and LA especially - I know people like this. I read it cover to cover over two nights and didn't want it to end. Cannot wait for his next books. A fab writer, he chats to you on every page, it is not like a book at all. It is a conversation with familiar old friends. Do read Jeff Lee. Escapism at its best.

Hilarious Look at Life on the Weird Side

Vonda has spent 20 years !living with a larcenous loser who collects incontinent dying dogs. Pushed past her endurance, she brains him with a football trophy, tucks him into the chest freezer in his unpaid-for motor home, and takes off cross country with her two best friends, closely pursued by three odd-ball repo men. Every time you think the limit has been reached, more weirdness erupts. Hilarious!

I do not normally write reviews.... But I received this book as a gift and it's not my usual genre, but after reading this book in one sitting and hurting from laughing so hard I felt I had to. The characters are a cross between The YA YA's meets Golden Girls meets Thelma and Louise!! It's one of the funniest books I've read in years and I highly recommend it to anyone and I look forward to reading other works from this author!

Okay, if you haven't read this book yet you are missing out on a great read! This author takes you on a ride of comedy and laughter but yet can pull at the heart strings as well. The wittiness of the author's writing abilities shows with his characters and story telling. This is absolutely an amazing book! I loved every moment of reading this book and am a little sadden that I have completed it.

This book starts with Vonda committing a murder, and with her friend's Kay and Francine they go on a road trip in her boyfriend's RV with his dead body tucked away in the freezer. They plan to dispose of his body somewhere along the route, but things don't quite go to plan. You get drawn into their adventures and the problems the encounter and you end up wanting them to succeed. Unbeknown to them they are actually being followed by three repo men who also encounter a few problems along the way.

I wrote this book, so it wouldn't be right for me to write a review here.

That said, The Ladies Temperance Club's Farewell Tour is fast-paced, funny as hell and guaranteed to tickle the funny bone of every woman who has ever daydreamed about smacking her mate upside the head with a cast iron skillet.
