The newly revised reference work on the history and evolution of wolves, their biology and physiology, behavior and sociology, and their mythology. It is considered the best reference on wolves of its kind.
I didn't realize how fantastic wolves are until reading this. I wish that it had a better editor; there were quite a few typos and formatting errors and once half a sentence was missing.
I guess I was hoping for more info about wolves themselves and less about social issues surrounding them. I get that it's relevant but not really what I wanted to read personally. The section on wolf behavior felt really sparse for a book about wolves :-( also, the pics of dead wolves made me really sad! I cried several times reading this book. Just not "wowed" here
wolf history is very depressing! humans remain the major problem by far!
but the book is full of interesting facts about wolves and very well documented, if a little dated today...2019. thanks to the author for such a fine book.
I bought this when I was writing "The Windwater Pack" and repeatedly referenced it throughout the first draft. I use the photos as reference for art work as well. The book, small as it is, is wonderful and is one I won't get rid of any time soon. It's easy to look up details - such as the fact some wolves do have blue eyes all their lives, though I didn't keep this trait for the character I used it for and the lifespan of wild and captive wolves. In short, if you want to write a book about wolves and use facts, this will help you a lot.
A stupendous book, offering one could want to know about the wolf, both as hunter and hunted. Unlike wolves, man is the only predator that kills the healthy among other species, which only weakens that group. We can learn so much from animals if we take the opportunity to do so, instead of brashly moving forward with beliefs that are often unfounded.
An absolutely wonderful read. It covers most subjects relating to wolves from their biology to their mythology. It is slightly dated in some respects, but most of the general information is good. It focuses on facts, but manages to convey them in a way that is more interesting than reading a technical scientific paper. It also has a great selection of color photos illustrating the subject mater.
This is a really solid overview of what we know about wolves today. It covers just about every aspect of the wolf--anatomy and physiology to social behaviors and the various ways humans interact with wolves. If you're looking for a broad and informative overview, this is what you should pick up.
I used this book as a resource for writing my trend paper in my coposition one class. It had very good infromation, and now I am goin to be using it again to help me write an informative speech for my communications class. Very versital book.
The almanac of wolves gives good detail on what wolves are and what they do as animals. The first part of the book I especially liked because it told you about the wolves themselves but after that it was what humans have to do with them, it was not truly about the wolves.
An insightful observation into the world of wolves and how our perspectives of these beautiful creatures must change to reflect that of reality. The photography is gorgeous and matches very well with the descriptions and information given to the reader. A worthwhile read.
