Updated biography of Derek Sanderson Jeter (b. 1974), shortstop for the New York Yankees, considered to be one of the best baseball players of his generation. He has been among the American League leaders in hits and runs scored for the past ten years and is the all-time Yankees hit leader, passing Hall of Fame member Lou Gehrig in 2009. In the 2009 postseason, Jeter batted .355, including .407 in the 2009 World Series, as he won his fifth World Series championship. He was named Sportsman of the Year for 2009 by Sports Illustrated magazine.
