In this screwball romantic comedy, Haruhi, a poor girl at a rich kids' school, is forced to repay an $80,000 debt by working for the school's swankiest, all-male club—as a boy! There, she discovers just how wealthy the six members are and how different the rich are from everybody else...
Curious about Haruhi's standard of living, the Host Club members barge into her personal life by paying her a visit at home. While the guys do their utmost to be polite, everything they do seems to backfire, especially for poor Tamaki! On top of it all, he trips and lands on top of Haruhi--just in time for her cross-dressing father to catch them in a compromising position...
Bisco Hatori is a Japanese manga artist. Bisco Hatori is a pseudonym; she states that the name has special meaning to her. She has worked for such magazines as LaLa. Her manga debut was A Moment of Romance in LaLa DX. Her first series was Millennium Snow. However, the comedy Ouran High School Host Club is her breakout hit.
I’ve been in love with Ouran High School host club for years and years now, but I still love it soooo much!!! Haruhi is just the sweetest!!! Bisco Hatori knows how to make such cute characters.
I did really enjoy this one cause we are really starting to get to know each of the host club members!! And I love each and every one of them!!! I’m going to keep this brief because they’re just so short and I’ll do a group review when I finish the series.
Obviously I recommend this to everyone, cause it’s amazing!! But mainly to those who love YA romance type books. Especially manga style!! And if you haven’t yet, go watch the show too!!!! Love it sooooo much!!!
4.5/5 Amazing as usual! The Alice in Wonderland parody chapter is actually different to the anime episode so that was interesting, can't wait to read the next volume! :D
I just love this series soo much. Another fun volume. The last episode was the best. I just love how the whole club teamed up to protect and defend Tamaki.
3.5 ⭐️ Something this series excels at is having serious conversations but there is a lot of humor that helps the story go on. For the plot not much happened, and one of the main parts of the volume was the Alice in Wonderland chapter. I like the Alice in Wonderland story, but I personally didn’t enjoy it with this book. I was honestly a bit confused at times. I also didn’t see much character growth in this one, but it was nice seeing the characters like Mori acting differently. And the art, I would say this volume might have been my favorite for that. Overall, this was a fun read that held a lot of humor.
Probably the volume that has made me laugh the most so far, that Alice retelling was everything! I just couldn´t stop laughing, and whenever they broke the fourth wall, lol I wish I had that sense of humor. Also, oh my god my love for everyone has grown up, specially for Mori and Hunny, I just love their bond so much, they always care for each other and the episode where Hunny got a cavity is such a good example of that. I WANT MORE! Thank godness I´m only on volume 4
This one wasn't my favorite. Something about this one seemed a bit off. That something was probably the whole Alice in Wonderland thing which just seemed a bit clumsy and convoluted. Also, I'm not sure how transgender language is handled in Japan, but in the US the word "tranny" is generally used as a derogatory name and I'm not sure how I feel about seeing it used to describe Haruhi's Dad. Although I will admit that It's quite possible that this is somewhat dated or that something got lost in translation or that the culture is different in other countries I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I did like the way the club defends their idiot president and his good intentions.
Re-read: August 2020 This volume contains some of my favorite silly episodes. There isn't much in terms of character or plot development (though we are introduced to some important side characters and learn some more about the characters) but every episode is pure comedic gold. If I had to choose a favorite episode it would probably be episode 16 (with the newspaper club) but they were all great.
My least favorite is definitely the Love Egoist episode at the end, but that's not really part of the series. It isn't the worst thing I've ever read or anything, but the age gap is definitely uncomfortable and it's pretty boring.
Re-read 02/18 For me, this is the volume where the story starts to take off. I enjoyed the last 3 volumes, but after this volume the series becomes less episodic and there starts to be more of an overarching plot. I mean, it's still fairly episodic, but less so than before. Also, the friendship between the club really starts to be seen after this volume. Their friendship is what makes the series for me, so any episode that focuses on their relationship is a win for me.
This volume also contains Love Egoist. Part of me hates it because it's so cheesy, but the other part of me loves it...because it's so cheesy. It's loads of fun, but it is a bit too melodramatic, so I'm glad that we only get short snippets of it in different volumes.
Original Review Well, that was really weird. But still super funny!
Episode 13: The Host Club meets Haruhi's Dad. Tamaki makes a not great first impression and is invited to the supermarket with Haruhi to get away. The rest follow.
Episode 14: Hunny develops a cavity before his favorite holiday: Valentine's Day. Mori feels destructively responsible.
Episode 15: This episode is Alice in Wonderland themed! Haruhi is playing the role of Alice after going through Alice A, B, and C. The destroyer of the Black Queen wins Haruhi's heart. But when has Haruhi ever needed a hero besides herself?
Episode 16: The Host Club is shadowed by Ouran’s Newspaper Club. Readers are able to learn more about Tamaki and see the Host Club’s loyalty to him.
Of course I enjoyed this manga. The books and the show still overlap. I'm stoked to see what happens when they don't.
February 23-24 One day, Haruhi, a scholarship student at exclusive Ouran High School, breaks an $80,000 vase that belongs to the 'Host Club', a mysterious campus group consisting of six super-rich (and gorgeous) guys. To pay back the damages, she is forced to work for the club, and it's there that she discovers just how wealthy the boys are and how different they are from everybody else.
Review : this volume was great I loved the stories so after Haruhi father walks in on tamaki on Haruhi well he throws Tamaki and then we learn kyoya has been chatting with Haruhi father and Haruhi gets mad and goes to the store alone but Haruhi father after hurting tamaki feelings leaves and he goes to the store with Haruhi where they end up making a hot pot . In the next part Hunny ends up getting a cavity and sweets end up getting banned in the host club and he ends up getting mad at mori and mori feels it's his fault that honey didn't brush his teeth hunny apologizes to mori and then sweets are back at the host club. In the next part of the story they end up doing a alice and wonderland part with multiple Alice's first it was the twins then tamaki then Haruhi it was a funny part of the story . The last part is when the newspaper club wants to do a expose on the host club mostly tamaki but the twins find out and they all stop it from happening I enjoyed this volume.

This one is definitely my favourite volume so far, especially because of the Alice in Wonderland chapter 💖👀 It’s so chaotic and I find it hilarious that Haruhi is not even the first to be the Alice lol but eventually when she does, and the rest assumed their roles too, it’s just pure comedic wholesomeness! Mori being a baby and changing into his normal body, clinging towards Haruhi all the time is cute and funny too. I honestly can’t with the mangaka’s level of humour 😂
The valentine’s day chapter where Hani got a toothache and Mori blames himself for him is hilarious too. I really enjoy the moments between these two, and you can see how close their bond is 💗 the fact that it’s mentioned that Mori’s fans are mostly introverted and serious girls? Spot on! I’m totally that too 😂
Tamaki is obviously catching feelings fast towards Haruhi, though he’s too dense to realise it. That cute part where these two accidentally hug each other while hiding from Hani is so sweet 💗 and I really think it’s sweet that all the boys defend Tamaki when some bastards wanted to do dirty to Tamaki. They may bully him most of the time, but they clearly care a lot about Tamaki too.
Aside from the 2 stories at the end (1 AU for the host club and 1 short story about random students), this was pretty good!
We get the end of the host club's visit to Haruhi's place and meeting her father. I love how protective Haruhi is over him and how she defended him when people made negative comments about his job. I also love how much her father cares for and worries about her.
There's a pretty cute story with Hunny in this volume. An Alice in Wonderland story that was a bit hard to follow, but pretty cute. The more we learn about the Tamaki, the more he grows on me.
The last 2 stories were very evident of how outdated this was - though unfortunately it's only the west that shames stories like those now. I wish there weren't mangas with teacher/student tropes and I worry about the kids that grew up having read that Hunny AU story at the end of this volume. The only positive rep I've seen in manga for larger characters has been She Loves to Cook, She Loves to Eat and I'm Kinda Chubby and I'm Your Hero.
So, personally, I'd rec just skipping the Egoist story and the host club AUs at the end of this volume.
Another just okay volume. The Alice chapter was a fun exploration but kinda weird. I prefer when the series leans into the characters and less the cosplay/schtick. Also the Love Egoist chapter was SO WEIRD AND BAD. Negative points for that one Hatori.
More like 4.5 This time I couldn't give my relevant updates (I'm sick af) but in general:
-haruhi's dad is best dad -it swifts between the anime and the live-action but still there's content that hasn't been adapted -that thing of passing the roll of alice was great -the journalism club plot is always great
Hahaha-- the synopsis for this volume is just the summary of the final episode in volume 3! Merely setting the stage for Tamaki's continued embarrassment. Again.
Episode 13 begins right where 12 left off: With Tamaki in a compromising position with Haruhi as her father returns home. Antics, obviously, ensue. What I appreciate most about this episode is that we get to understand Haruhi's father (Who goes by Ranka - it's his professional name). He is a complex character - a bisexual who works at a cross-dressing bar, a doting father who struggles to connect with his independent daughter while wanting to protect her. It's obvious that he and Tamaki are shockingly similar.
Episode 14! Poor Hunny. He gets a toothache JUST in time for Valentine's Day. This whole episode is purely Mori and the Club preventing Hunny from eating sweets until he can get his cavity cared for. It's shockingly adorable and I laughed at all the way Hunny tried to convince people to let him eat cake. XD I also appreciate the Samurai spirit Mori has - the poor man is beating himself up the whole episode because he blames his negligence on Hunny's cavity. Silly? Yes. I don't care. They're so cute.
Sigh. I could take or leave Episode 15. This Alice in Wonderland retelling is fun from the idea that the Host Club characters each take on different roles; particularly as they keep changing roles mid-episode. But overall? I just didn't care that much for it. Cute, fun, but overall meh.
Episode 16 introduces us to our first of the other school clubs: The Newspaper Club! About the be shut down due to poor circulation, the Newspaper Club requests to do a special issue on the Host Club thinking their popularity will keep the newspaper, and their club, afloat. Kyoya is opposed, but Tamaki won't let their peers suffer when they can be helping! As is not to be surprised, the Newspaper club hopes to expose the Host Club as the vagrants there are and smear the name of Tamaki in particular. The Host club boys leave Tamaki and Haruhi behind (Who get to know each other better in an adorable hide-and-seek scene) while they go and expose the plot. After all, we come the learn, Tamaki is the son of the Ouran High School chairman.
Finally, Volume 4 concludes with another Love Egoist episode. I won't lie, I strongly dislike these. This one in particular felt inappropriate and abusive on so many levels. I hope there aren't more of these in the future. O_o
While the overarching plot if slower moving, I feel like this reflects reality. Life isn't one consistently tethered story. I appreciate getting to know these characters one moment at a time.
It took me a week to finish this manga. I would say that is about how long it takes for me to read a manga that I'm not completely interested in reading. It was my aim to finish this manga asap and start the next volume for Asiareadathon 2020 but also to help complete my tbr which I created in April. Initially I really liked this volume as it was the concluding chapter to one of my favourite scenes in the series so far of the Host Club visiting Haruhi's house. But after that chapter was finished I felt like the next chapter was not as interesting with Hunny getting a cavity and not being able to eat sweets. Then there was almost like a roleplay or like a alternative universe where the Host Club was Alice In Wonderland. I did not like that chapter, but I also enjoyed the next chapter where the newspaper club wanted to do an expose on the host club but they ended up banding together and protecting the club and Tamaki. Then there was a chapter unrelated to the manga series called Love Egoist which I did not like. I had mixed feelings with this volume as it had things which I did like but also did not like. The main reason why I ended up finishing this manga was because I wanted to complete it for Asiareadathon, not because I enjoyed it and wanted to read it.
¡A seguir leyendo!
It's still fun to see the minor differences from anime to manga, especially with the rest of the Club's visit to Haruhi's apartment and the Haruhi in Wonderland chapter. I did think the anime did a better job with framing that around the first half of the series and including more symbolism (which I will love). While the Alice switching was funny, it did come at the cost of Haruhi playing her feeling proprietary (although seeing Tamaki in the Alice outfit was a surprise since Hatori didn't put him in drag with the Lobelia visit).
I also didn't add this to my sequels that were better shelf because of the bonus story. I preferred the last one. The twin parallels and Hatori's love for them continue to shine through with the Kuronuma sisters. The framing of the main two here hit a line between platonic and romantic, and it leaning towards the latter made me uncomfortable (likely because it was between student and teacher, and with recent discourse on this, I give it a pass).
I think the language has to be taken as a poor translation or a product of the times before everyone knew better. The story still tends to follow wild routes but I'm beginning to like it more and enjoy seeing the characters act out even the more ridiculous scenes.
much more bearable than the previous volume, there wasn't anything super upsetting that i could find. although the alice in wonderland chapter was kinda useless (author literally says that she ran out of ideas for that chapter). might continue reading since this was an improvement from the last volume. i still love haruhi and i'm pretty sure that will never change :)
I did enjoy this volume more than I did the previous volume. I almost gave this 4 stars but there was a little too much filler content. The bonus story of Love Egotist was interesting and I hope we get a continuation of it in a later volume. I will be continuing on with this series soon.
