Four and a half stars. If it hadn’t been for the good reviews of others here who opinions I value, I would never have picked up this novel, since I hate covers with girls in the bushy hats.
After leaving her husband who is a gambling addict, Kate takes the family back to the property North Star she inherited from her grandfather who she despised and with good reason. Though the place has been let go and also has many negative memories, she still figures the children 8 year old Liam and 14 year ol

As the three of them neared the end of their long journey from the city to the country, and the little town of Widgerry near North Star, the property Kate had just inherited from her grandfather, she was looking fo ...more

North Star is an entertaining contemporary novel from author Karly Lane that combines elements of suspense and romance in the Australian bush. Kate Thurston has left a disastrous marriage and returned to her home town to raise her children on the inherited property on which she grew up. North Star holds few good memories for Kate but with little choice other than to make a go of it, she sets out to restore the house and land and create a stable home for her rebellious teenage daughter and reserv ...more

North Star is the first book by Australian author Karly Lane and it's the first book I've read by her. It was a quick, easy read that I flew through in two days as it was really enjoyable. Set in the Australian outback, the story follows divorcee Kate Thurston as she and her two children head to the family farm to start a new life. Kate was a likeable woman with enough skeletons in her closest that made her journey better then average. Her little boy was adorable but her teenage daughter Georgia ...more

The cool thing about this little Aussie Rural Romance read was the reality of teenage girls! “Only someone who hadn’t gone throughout the hell of living with teenage girl could possible believe that, thought Kate. It was becoming easy to identity other parents of teenage daughters. If they still sounded positive and encouraging, they didn’t have a teenager yet.” The author also in her acknowledgement section offered words of positivity to parents of teenage girls. What a nice lady! (I’m struggli ...more

This is the first book I've read of Karly Lane's and I must say I was thoroughly impressed. I loved the action packed story line, the way in which you can connect and sympathise with the realistic characters and the passion with which Karly has obviously poured into this novel. I found that every time I picked this book up I didn't want to put it down. I was so drawn to the characters and the situations that were unfolding I just wanted to keep reading to find out how the current situation was g ...more

I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading this book, thought it was refreshing and good to read an Australian novel. There was the makings of a good story and on the whole it did not disappoint, though I think it could have gone further. In fact when I came to the end I did not realise that the book had ended, I thought there has to be more. I had a look to see if there was a Book 2, but could not find one. Thought there would have been more on the neighbour who wanted to buy the land. I ...more

So I'm kinda kicking myself for not discovering the awesomeness of Karly Lane sooner. (Although, I guess, now that means I have lots of awesomeness to catch up on, rather than waiting for new books to come out)

North Star is the story of Kate, a single mother who has returned to her childhood home after the death of her Grandfather. They need a fresh start, and this is the perfect opportunity.

The thing I'm loving about these books is that it's the woman's story. Although the men and romance play

North Star is Australian contemporary rural fiction author Karly Lane’s first release and although I am a big fan of Karly’s work I had not yet read it. North Star is centered on the character of Kate Thurston, a woman fleeing her rapidly downward spiralling marriage with her two children. When Kate learns she is to inherit her Grandfather’s country based property North Star, she sees it as a blessing in disguise. Taking the opportunity to start afresh in the country, away from her gam

I read this book right after reading 'Sweet Tooth' by Ian McEwan - so anything is bound to feel a little average in that position; but I don't think that's the only reason I found this book pretty underwhelming. First off, I don't know anything about the author and her background/other work - I'll have a look into that after this short review.

The story is pretty basic in that it follows a path of: single Mum, nightmare ex husband, tearaway teen, skeletons in a closet and ill timed love interest

My grandmother gave me this book and when my tablet was not working I decided to give this book a try. I was not impressed nor entertained in a good way. When I was entertained it was because of the lack of smart dialogues or all the stupidly annoying cliches.
This story got too many cliches, and that is probably why my grandmother liked this book. Everything is way too perfect. The most handsome and eligible man in the town is of course single and interested in Kate. And what would a book about

I loved North Star. What a story! I could not put it down! Full of suspense, mystery, fun and a hint of romance. I had a few giggles at what Kate had to deal with from her teenage daughter, all the while dealing with a major family upheaval, I did feel for both her and Kate. Liam was such a typical 8 year old boy, dealing with the family changes and taking it all in his stride as best as he could. Kate's view for her property was inspirational and uplifting, the discoveries she made about her fa ...more

I love this novel! It has all the right ingredients for me to make a great story. The rural setting, a little suspense and mystery, a heroin strong enough to face all the obstacles put in her way, with her friends standing by her and a man fighting for and with her.North Star was an easy read and I got so wrapped up in the story, that I stayed up last night to finish. Looking forward to another great book from Karly Lane!
