George Washington's False Teeth: An Unconventional Guide to the Eighteenth Century

George Washington was inaugurated as president in 1789 with one tooth in his mouth, a lower left bicuspid. The Father of His Country had sets of false teeth that were made of everything but wood, from elephant ivory and walrus tusk to the teeth of a fellow human.

Darnton shows in this title that the Enlightenment had false teeth also - that it was not the Father of the Modern World, responsible for all its advances and transgressions. In restoring the Enlightenment to a human scale, Darnton locates its real aims, ambitions and significance. So too with the French Revolution, another icon of the 18th century, approached here through the gossip, songs and broadsides that formed the political nervous system of Paris during the ancien regime.

Figures that we think we know - Voltaire, Jefferson, Rousseau, Condorcet, even historians themselves emerge afresh in Darnton's hands, their vitality, if not their teeth intact.

I'm almost done with this book. It's a series of essays about French-American intellectual exchanges in the 18th century. Darnton writes in such a lovely style, it's almost as fast a read as a novel. I'm interested in the whole aspect of Enlightenment ideas that these guys -- Jefferson, Tom Paine, Ben Franklin, and Rousseau, Voltaire, Bayle, and many others whom I had barely heard of, used as the basis of the democratic movement they were working on. Of course, the democracy they were building didn't always include a very wide range of people. Slaves, workers, and women, for example, were not considered worthy. Darnton examines the biographies of these organizers, and how their life stories influenced their views of the world. I'm writing this without the book in front of me, but I am enjoying it. They called it the Republic of Letters, which actually involved writing lots of letters...

This book is a collection of essays on the Enlightenment era of the 18th Century. Of particular interest is Chapter 2, which deals with "news networks" in 18th Century Paris. Newspapers as we know them didn't exist and anything of that character would in fact have been illegal. So how did people learn about what was going on? Darnton's history, pieced together relying on administrative and police records of the era, is fascinating. Every person working in the news business would benefit from this essay.

Kitap 8 bölümden oluşuyor ancak bölümler uyumsuz. Genel okuyucuya hitap eden kısımlar oldukça keyifli, ufuk açıcıyken bazı bölümler sadece o konu üzerine çalışan kimseleri cezbedebilir. Örneğin Voltaire ve Jefferson'ın "Mutluluk Arayışı" üzerine mukayesesi heyecan vericiyken 18. yy Paris'indeki dedikodu ağının haritası benim için gereksiz bilgilerden ibaretti. Bu sebeple bir bölümden diğerine geçerken okuma hızı ve ilgisi de sürekli değişiyordu. Bunun neden böyle olduğunu ise kitabın en sonundaki teşekkür metninde öğreniyorsunuz. Darnton, farklı zamanlarda ve farklı vesilelerle yazdığı bazı araştırma raporlarıyla denemeleri günün sonunda Aydınlanma ve Fransız Devrimi temaları altında buluştukları için birlikte yayımlamak istemiş. Bana sorarsanız ayırmaya ya da tek bir tarzda kaleme almaya üşenmiş.

I was very disappointed in this book- mainly because the title is so misleading. First, the book barely mentions George Washington, and only gives a passing reference to American history in general. It was, in fact, a vignette on certain aspects of the French revolution. Second, it is certainly not "unconventional". I was also disappointed because the book was uninteresting and unengaging.

Ridiculous title, but glad I accidentally checked-out this book. Only up to page 17--this slim tome is thick with references and half-remembered names from college survey courses. Here's a link to one of the chapters, comparing "The Enlightenment" to the advent of the internet.

Robert Darnton's George Washington's False teeth: An Unconventional History of the Eighteenth Century (New York: Norton, 2003) is certainly better written while offering an interesting take on the curiosities of the eighteenth century.

This book is a collection of scholarly essays about the eighteenth century. I was hoping it would be about interesting trivia from that period, since Darnton is a professional historian. There is a little bit of that, mostly in the opening chapters. Mostly, however, it's inside baseball, i.e. esoteric quisquilla that's only of interest to specialists of the eighteenth century.

Essentially, he took some of his research, written by a specialist for other specialists, and sort of repackaged it for the general reader. That formula generally doesn't work, because the interests and demands of professional historians are not those of the general reader. It makes for somewhat tedious and boring reading.

His chapter about the development of newspapers was pretty interesting--one of the only ones I got much out of. My biggest take-away, which he doesn't explore and barely mentions, is that news was originally local news, i.e. news about your community--people you knew directly or indirectly. Nowadays, news is pretty much the opposite, i.e. news about people you don't know in any real sense. This is true even of local news in any city of more than 100,000 people or so.

Darnton seems to me a quintessential example of THE problem in academia--micro specialization. He knows a great deal about the "history" of the eighteenth century, but not much else. For example, he knows a lot about Rousseau, the time in which he lived and his personal life. Yet, he doesn't know much about philosophy or political theory. Consequently, he hasn't carefully studied or attempted to understand Rousseau's important books, e.g. First and Second Discourse, The Social Contract, etc. Consequently, he really doesn't know that much about Rousseau or understand him as well as he thinks he does.

I expected a fun read adding some context to my understanding of the 18th Century....what did different classes eat, who had the money to own a carriage, how frequently did people travel and why. This is not that book - this is a scholarly examination of the Enlightenment focusing on France, with some USA. A more difficult read than I was anticipating, but sections regarding the French Revolution tied in nicely with Mike Duncan's work.

Professor Darnton is a brilliant scholar; now in this collection of writings somewhat less wonky than his academic writings, he demonstrates how the Enlightenment era, rather than being a pure, monolithic exercise in Reason, Truth, and Logic, was populated by figures ever-so unsavory: speculators hiring writers to peddling false propaganda about particular companies, other writers who wrote what we would consider libel about the ruling classes, and others. It's the 1780s-90s version of fake news!

Very cool text.

Warning: not as easy a read as the title might suggest.

(192) אומרים ש"הסקרנות הרגה את החתול" והנה אני הוכחה חייה לכך שהיא לא! כמכורה להיסטוריה, אומנות ופילוסופיה, הספר "השיניים התותבות של ג`ורג` וושינגטון" סיקרן אותי מאז יצאתו לאור. הציור על העטיפה, והנושא המרכזי של הספר, היסטוריה של המאה ה- 18, גרמו לי לקדם אותו במעלה שרשרת הממתינים, ולתת לו עדיפות. ולא התחרטתי! הספר סיפק לי שעות עונג רבות. לא רבים ספרי העיון שכתובים בחסד ובחן כמו הספר שהוציא תחת ידו דארנטון. מדריך המתאר בגובה העניים ובשפה קולחת ואף משעשעת, את האירועים ההיסטורים של המאה ה- 18 מנקודת מבט קצת שונה. אהבתי את הספר גם בשל האיזון שנוקט המחבר בשתי רמות: ברמה הבינלאומית : חלק גדול מהספר עוסק בהשוואת התרבות והרעיונות האירופאים לרעיונות האמריקאים. ברמה הפנימית : למרות היותו של המחבר אמריקאי, הרגשתי שהדיון ביתרונות והחסרונות של כל תרבות מאוזן ומפוקח, לא מתלהם ומשתדל להיות הוגן לצדדים השונים. במקרים מסויימים העדיף המחבר שלא לנקוט עמדה, ולהותיר לקורא להסיק בעצמו את מסקנותיו. קצת קשה לי לסכם את כלל הנושאים שהספר עוסק בהם, ואני בטוחה שעוד תמצאו הדים רבים לרעיונות שהוצגו ברשומות שאכתוב, אבל פטור בלא כלום אי אפשר ולכן מספר פרקים שאהבתי: "הטיעון בזכות הנאורות" - ניסיון להתמודד עם טיעונים שונים שעולים בגנות הנאורות תוך מתן דוגמאות קונקרטיות. אני חושבת שבגדול מדובר באחד משני הפרקים הטובים ביותר בספר, והוא מוגש לקורא כאפרטיף, מרכך חיך לקראת הארוחה שתכלול מטעמים רבים ומגוונים. הדיון, שמסכם את הפרק, יכול להוות שיעור מאיר עיניים על שחיקת ערכי הנאורות והגלישה ללאומיות. "החדשות בפאריז : חברת המידע המוקדמת" - דיון שחלקו משעשע על העברת רכילות וחדשות בפאריז של המאה ה- 18. מסתבר שאין חדש תחת השמש והנושאים המרכזיים שהעסיקו את הפריזאים מעסיקים גם אותנו במאה ה- 21. ההתהוללות המינית של המלך (טוב, טוב אז לנו אין מלך, אבל זה לא מונע מנבחרינו להתהולל מינית). אהבתי את הרעיון של חמשירים ושירים קטנים בעלי פואנטה, שהעבירו את הידיעות והחדשות. נדרשים המון יצירתיות ומעוף בכדי לתאר אירועים פוליטים בשירה וזימרה. קחו תרגיל אינטלקטואלי ונסו לחבר שיר קצר על כנס הרצליה האחרון. הניסיון ילמד אתכם במהרה שאין זה פשוט. "החתירה לאושר: וולטר וג`פרסון" - מדובר, לעניות דעתי, באחד הפרקים החשובים והמבריקים שנכתבו על נושא האושר. חוששתני, שדווקא פרק זה, החשוב לכל קורא, דורש מהקורא להתמצא בכתבים פילוסופיים כמו"קנדיד" לוולטר והמסות השונות שחיבר לוק ("המסכת השניה על ממשל מדיני", "המסה על שכל האדם") ומצמצם את אפשרות הסקת המסקנות מהטיעונים המוצגים בו. דארנטון מקעקע את מרבית הטיעונים של הניאו ליברליזם ומזכיר לאמריקאים, את החזון שעמד בבסיס החוקה. אושר ושיוויון לכל. בניגוד לנהוג לחשוב, אלה לא מילים בזויות, אלא נגזרת של הליברליזם המכונן את מהותנו כאנשים חופשיים. התופעה המכוערת של שטיפת מח ציבורית חוזרת ונשנית , פימפום חסר גבולות ובושות של עקרונות הקפטיליזם החזירי (שהוא נגזרת ברורה של הניאו ליברליזם) שמעמיד, באמתלות שונות שיש כאלה המוכנים להאמין בהן, את כלל האמצעים הציבוריים לטובת העשירים ובעלי הממון, השכיח מהציבור את עקרונות היסוד המצדיקים את קיום המדינה. במה נמדדת מדינה אם לא בחינוך, בבריאות ובבטחון? (ואני כבר לא מדברת על האפשרות לתעסוקה ולחיות בכבוד) מספיק לצפות בשידורים מכנס הרצליה, על מנת להבין את המגמה הגוברת בארץ. שילוב קלטני בין הון לשילטון, התנערות המדינה מהאחריות שלה כלפי כלל האזרחים, הזנחת האינטרס הציבורי הכללי לטובת אינטרסים פרטיים. לא אחת אני שומעת בשיח אמירות כלליות וגורפות בזכות הקפטיליזם נוסח ארה"ב, בגנות המדיניות הסוציאלית. כשהאמירות האלה מגיעות מבני המעמד הבינוני הרמוס, שבקושי מסיימים כאן את החודש, או כשהן מגיעות מאדם המשתכר שכר מינימום, הן גורמות לי לתהות האם אנשים עד כדי כך התעוורו או איבדו את שיכלם? מה שמזכיר לי כל פעם את העובדה ש"עבד" הוא קודם כל "עבד" מנטלית. היום ישנם חלקים גדולים בציבור הישראלי, שמנטלית מוכנים להיות "עבדים" ולא אנשים חופשיים שווי זכויות והזדמנויות. כל פעם אני צוחקת מחדש כשמספרים לי על החלומות, שמדינתנו תלמד "מאחותה הגדולה" ותהיה אף היא ארץ האפשרויות הבלתי מוגבלות. אפשרויות בלתי נגמרות לאנשים לבנים ועדיף עם כסף. מעניין אם האינדיאנית או המהגרים המקסיקניים או אפילו האפרו אמריקאים מרגישים שווי זכויות ואפשרויות בלתי מוגבלות. דארנטון חידד אצלי את ההכרה עד כמה התרחקנו מהליברליזם והנאורות. הוא מזכיר שיש עוד דרכים למימוש הליברליזם. על הקשת, ישנם עוד סוגי קפיטליזם. הפרקים שחותמים את הספר לא קלים ולא זורמים. מדובר בפרק העוסק ברוסו ובתאוריות הרוסיאניות (שהן בעצמן לא פשוטות להבנה שכן הן מלאות פרדוכסים בלתי פתירים), ובשני פרקים העוסקים בבריסו. לזכותו של דארנטון יצויין כי אינו מתיימר לפשט את העיניינים אלא לסגור מעגל אישי, לפחות לא בכל מה שנוגע לבריסו, אחד מנהיגי המהפכה הצרפתית מהזרם הז`ירונדיסטי. מבחינתי ספר חובה בכל בית. As a compilation of essays, that have been written over a long span of time for different purposes, this book had it's ups and downs. I almost stopped reading it when the first chapter (In the defense of the Enlightenment), managed to frustrate and annoy me by it's cocky manner and by twisting common facts to fit Darnton's fancy, without really resting on -why- everything should be interpreted in the way he does. But with every following essay Darnton proved that he had a good handle on the 18th century and managed to bring to life a very complex time through multitude of angles (gossip, anthropology, finances - you name it). The book ends with a rather personal, introspective essay on how historians are dependent on not only their sources but their own ideas of how someone/something was. It's not a new revelation by any means but it was a very fitting end to this book and the reason why I tipped over and gave 4 stars instead of 3. I am quite excited to check out some more pieces of work from him about notes/songs/pamphlets/books and public awareness/opinion before French Revolution. He has a very dynamic way of telling a story and when he has the sources to back it up, it's a pleasure.

From the title and cover art, I was expecting something much lighter, some cutesy stories about the Founding Fathers, but this is actually several more scholarly essays on the Eighteenth Century with a focus on the American and French Revolutions.

Title is horrible and GROSS misrepresentation--content has nothing to do with what it implies. ugh. Typeface was too small, words were too lofty and pretentious.
