Jack Storm, a former academic and now unlicensed PI is hired by adult film star Gloria Whole to find her wayward partner - Jerry Picco, a midget adult film star whose popularity is on the decline. What looks to be a relatively simple find and deliver deal turns south when royalty gets involved leading to the reemergence of the ghosts from 1979 which could have an adverse affect on a royal coupling. Along with hard nosed PI Storm, we're introduced to Tony Eagle, a muscle with promise and starlet ...more

Saw this because I read one of Barlow’s others. Not the same at all. This is a kind of retro-noir about an ex-college professor who turns his hand to solving crimes. It’s also a spoof on a fairy tale (no spoiler intended, so I won’t expand). The writing, despite this unusual premise, is extremely good, real snappy, punchy noir stuff, and the main characters fly off of the page at you. I think you’d call this big-hearted writing, but well within the genre.

Recommends it for: no-one.
Couldn't finish this. Abandoned after reading only 20%.

It's not that it's badly written, just not particularly original. It's like the author looked at a blueprint, based on Noir/Hard-boiled novels he's read & then concocted this. No doubt he is a big fan of the genre. Perhaps he should leave it at that.
