In 1972 or 1973 I met Jane at a Women's club meeting with my mother in law when I was just a young Mom. Jane was enthusiastic and passionate about healthy eating. I was just as passionate about doing my best for my children, and I took Jane's principles very seriously. Having grown up on a farm where most of the family food was produced on the land or bartered with neighboring farmers, and not purchased in a grocery store, what she said made sense to me. Subsequently, with Jane's book as a guide, my kids grew up without food coloring and processed food long before it was popular. I found it was also an inexpensive way to cook for a large family (3 growing boys at the time). I was not fanatical (we indulged in McDonald's on occasion, and boxes of Cheerios), but there weren't any soft drinks, potato chips or Hamburger Helper in the pantry. One son became a doctor, and the other two are lawyers, and the baby girl who came along later is getting her PhD in developmental biology! I give some credit to their diet, tho they all roll their eyes at this. :)

I read this book when I was about 11 years old and it has continually influenced the way I look at food. It sums up everything you need to know about healthy eating in a straightforward and humorous manner. To this day I still follow the authors mantra to "never count calories, just avoid empty calories". I believe this is one reason I have never had weight problems or deny myself of food. This book is not to be mistaken with the one Seinfeld's wife wrote--Jane Kinderlehrer had the idea of sneaking in healthy food long before her!

Read when I was married a few years to a picky "plain" eater, with a toddler, also picky, trying to sneak in healthy options. Good resource for both at the time.
