Masters of the Shadowlands #14

It'll Be An Adventure

Rate this book
From NYT & USA Today Bestselling author Cherise Sinclair comes an outstanding addition to the beloved Masters of the Shadowlands series.

The secret of author Murphy’s success is hands-on research.

Murphy loves writing popular Regency thrillers and jumping into new adventures under the guise of research. For one novel, she’d joined a K9 search-and-rescue group—and liked it so much she stayed. But this book… Why had she thought a Regency birching club was a good setting?

The challenge is, she’ll have to return to the Shadowlands.

Years ago, she’d sneaked into the area’s most exclusive, private club. And what had happened to her there…well, she still has nightmares. But she’s healed now, right?

When she gets up her courage to visit the club, the owner hands her over to Master Saxon.

Master Saxon is handsome, powerful, and dominant. The veterinarian has a gorgeous smile, a trust-me voice, and does Search and Rescue with his canine helper, Sherlock. In the Shadowlands, he’s known as the Viking god. For years, he’s avoided serious relationships. A quiet, little author can’t possibly slip past his defenses. Even if he does adore her books.

Master Saxon guided her into the dungeon. “If I birch you extra hard, will that get you to write faster?”
Her mouth dropped open at his wicked grin, then his words registered. “No!”

A New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, she’s renowned for writing heart-wrenching romances with laugh-out-loud dialogue, alpha males, and absolutely sizzling sex.

I met my dearheart when vacationing in the Caribbean. Now I won’t say it was love at first sight. Actually since he stood over me, enjoying the view down my swimsuit top, I might have been a tad peeved—as well as attracted. But although we were together less than two days and lived on opposite sides of the country, love can’t be corralled by time or space.

We’ve now been married for many, many years. (And he still looks down my swimsuit tops.)

Nowadays, I live in the west with this obnoxious, beloved husband and a seventy-pound lap-puppy. I’m a gardener, and I love nurturing small plants until they’re big and healthy and productive…and ripping defenseless weeds out by the roots when I’m angry. I enjoy thunderstorms, collecting eggs from the chickens, and visiting the local brewery for the darkest, maltiest beer on tap. My favorite way to spend an evening is curled up on a couch next to the master of my heart, watching the fire, reading, and…well…if you’re reading my books, you obviously know what else happens in front of fires.

Disappointing, Repetitive and Underwhelming
Hopefully this is the last in this series because it felt like the author had nothing left in the tank for this book. It was written on fumes.
I get that these are somewhat formulaic but it was beyond ridiculous how unoriginal this one was. It was contrived and boring and meandering with no real plot. We had repeated and redundant confrontations with catty one-dimensional other women, an evil moustache twirling ex boyfriend, and toxic family members one after another but no ACTUAL CONFLICT. This series has confronted human traffickers, had undercover investigations, pedophiles, arsonists, serial killers etc and this book had *drum roll* Saxon not wanting commitment because his previous girlfriends have been shallow *whomp whomp whomp*. I put this book aside three times to read other books, it was so boring and clichéd. Everything in this book was under or undeveloped, including transparent, simplistic, evil ‘pretty’ women. I was over it with the first one, but we see at least five separate instances of tearing other women down to boost up our heroine. I highlighted a few of them and they are pretty vicious and obvious internalized misogyny. I’m over setting other women up as competition, and having the brainless catty bimbos set up as villains in this genre. But it was done an extreme amount in this story because the plot lacked anything else to drive it. I was a little worried about the author, frankly, that she could write such vicious hate against women disguised as comeuppance for villains. At one point Saxon mentions his model stepmother must have the same I.Q. as her age, I’m sorry, what? A most unnecessary comment that just made him look like a douchebag to me more than anything. That woman wasn’t even a character in the book outside the one comment. Where is the kind Dom we are supposed to root for? My god! 15 books is more than enough for me, I won’t be buying any more.
Even the sex scenes were underwhelming , and that is by far Sinclair’s biggest strength. There was so little steam for something in this genre; a little rough sex and then a scene with a sex machine, which has already been done in Andrea’s book in the Shadowlands series and Abby’s book in the Doms of Dark Haven.
I think this might be it for me and this author. Enough is enough. I can’t keep reading the same book over and over while paying for new content, it’s anger inducing. The only differences between her characters now are hair colour and style, and sometimes they might have an Irish accent, even though they are from Chicago 🤷🏼‍♀️. I’m bored. Handing in my fan club card. Unfollow, unsubscribe.

Sidenote: This cover is giving 1985 WWE vibes. This guy has a mullet and it is NOT working for me. The cover designer must get her stock photography from the Sears Portrait Studio. It looks like he has a dungeon, but that dungeon is in his mother’s basement where he reigns over his fellow Masters at a weekly D&D game. *Thanks to Sarah Mac for inspiring that last joke, it’s superb*

Shadowlands has become one of my favorite BDSM clubs, and i’m always happy to have the opportunity to visit again.
To see how everyone is doing,to find out where they are in life, and to see if those that are still single manage to find someone to love.
This time,it’s Saxon and Murphy who are in the spotlight and what they have to go through to find their hea is quite the story….

In spite of everything,Murphy is a published author, and she’s good at it too!
Her regency murder mysteries series has been a hit for 4 years now,and her latest signing introduced her to Josie,an author we all know and love as one of the Shadowlands kittens.
She gives Murphy the idea of a place for the murder in her next book, too….a BDSM club.
And not just any club,no….the very same club where Murphy had her one and only disastrous introduction to the lifestyle,Shadowlands!
But the idea is stuck in her head, and she dóes need to do the research,so….
On her first night, she’s introduced to pet play by Gabi, and even though she can’t use it,it ís fun.
Until Gabi decides to misbehave and gets punished for it by a Dom that isn’t her partner….

Saxon loves his work as a vet,but it’s a lot.
Add to that the SAR work he does with his dog Sherlock, and he’s got enough on his plate.
Go8ng to Shadowlands is a good way to blow of steam, and being monitor for the subs during pet play usually is fun.
But Gabi, who’d been acting strange lately,is asking for the punishment he and Marcus agreed he would be the one to give.
And damn if the newbie he was interested in,didn’t seem to agree with what he ended up doing….

Meeting up at the next SAR seems like fate, and getting paired up is great….for Saxon.
Not so much for Murphy, who’d rather avoid him altogether after that night….
Adding to her discomfort are the nasty remarks from the man she just broke up with,Ross.
But Saxon and Murphy work well together, and both end the exercise feeling good about it.

In the meantime, her brothers seem to think they can use her place for just about anything.
And they seem to think she’ll pay for just about anything, too…
Just because she raised them after their mother died, doesn’t mean she’s still responsible for them,is it??
Their father isn’t any better,he only calls when he needs her to help him out with stuff at his B & B.
When will she manage to stand up for herself, and tell them to deal with their stuff on their own???

Being with Saxon feels good after they talk things through, and he’s really helpful with the research for her book…
In fact, she enjoys the time they spend together, and the way he stands up for her when needed, makes her feel cared for.
He understands her, gives her what she needs, they have the same kind of humor, and they both love animals.
If only he was the kind of man that did relationships, because she was starting to fall for him….

Saxon isn’t into relationships, but Murphy is very tempting….
She’s the first woman that doesn’t ask anything of him,but instead is eager to help.
And Sherlock is crazy about her, too….
Finding out her background is a shock, and he admires her for the woman she’s become in spite of it.
She’s caring, generous, and fun to be with,in short, she’s the kind of woman he could see himself spending the rest of his life with.

But there are those that don’t want to see these two together.
And they’ll do their best to split them up.
Are Saxon and Murphy strong and smart enough to see through the deceit and trust in eachother?

As always,Cherise tells a story that’s about so much more than “simply” love.
She shows you that being family doesn’t mean you can use someone to do your bidding and not give anything in return.
That having friends that care means they also have your back when you need it.
That bullies are losers you shouldn’t give any power, and standing up for yourself can feel só good.
That having been assaulted doesn’t mean you can’t get back up and live life to it’s fullest.
There are life lessons in here, carefully woven into the story, giving it that little bit extra.

And naturally, there’s the family at Shadowlands that welcome you with open arms.
That make you feel at home, and leave you feeling happy in the end.

This is the fifteenth book set in Shadowlands, an upscale kink club with a very, shall we say, eventful history. Here we get romance-writer Murphy and search-and-rescuer Saxon. He's an experienced dom; she's a skittish sub; why, despite her best efforts, do they always seem to run into each other? Note: Characters and lines of action from previous books do appear.

First, in the interest of full disclosure, I want to say that unlike many genre-loving readers, I'm not a huge Cherise Sinclair fan. The first book left a bad taste in my mouth when the supposedly experienced dominant, Z, forced a newbie sub into sex play that only by the magic of fiction didn't traumatize her. Since then, I've read this series intermittently: for every one book I've liked, I've disliked two. This falls into the latter category.

My reservations began when we met the very mustache-twirling, black-hat wearing boyfriend and his mean girls colleagues. They were so clichéd, so obvious in their awfulness that they didn't even elicit a frisson of hatred on my part; rather, I yawned and thought "here we go with the melodramatic all-bad or all-good characters again;" and mentally said to Murphy: "I can't even feel sorry for you here: only an idiot would have seen something, anything in Ross." Then there's all the character baggage: while Murphy's does, at least, make sense, Saxon's is just juvenile: it seems he never left his college days behind. There was no real reason for this couple not to be together and thus, very little conflict or tension. At a certain point, the book just dragged, only to end with, well, more endings than LORT.

That said, I'm a sucker for anything meta so loved that Murphy was a romance writer. I'm a sucker for anything with animals so loved that Saxon was a veterinarian. And I'm a sucker for emphases on content, trigger warnings, and "don't try this at home" disclaimers so loved that the author, as always, included those.

3 stars which I'm raising by a 1/2 for this: "Even romance novels act like popping out babies is the be all and end all of life. And I feel like people view me as ‘less than’ when I say I don’t want any." I think most fans will like this (particularly appearances from other characters). I did enjoy the search-and-rescue sub-plot (I'm not an expert, but it seemed well-researched). But, as other reviewers noted, the series is losing steam. It may be time to either hit the "refresh" button, "pause," or "delete."

This one was fun! There were times that Murphy was over her head, yet it was good for her. Her meeting Josie, talking about their books and being led to Shadowlands was just what Murphy needed, from Saxon, to loads of new friends, to putting things in the past, to finally finding a way to put her family in their place. Murphy grew and changed so much in this one, just by knowing someone had her back. Even if things with Saxon had been a one off, he taught her a great lesson the one time. I also liked how Saxon learned things about himself by being with Murphy. These 2 were really good for each other! I also loved that they didn't have a lot of drama between them, it was more outside forces. I especially liked how this one ended, loved how both were planning for their future and happy in their present.

Quick(ish) Review 3.5 yes I round up stars

When you hear BDSM romance you usually think dark, possibly gritty, dangerous? This series has elements of that but what separates it from the pack is it is also had the absolutely fluffiest cinny roll center of sweetness that you’ll ever read too. So this is for those who want “flithy with your sweet”type of read for me. Lemme splain.

Full disclosure: have read this series for years. I have bought several books and read several as ARCs and it doesn’t matter, I calls it like I see it. I did buy this one and I enjoyed myself. There’s some real kinky play, and then there’s things like adorable pet play which is not your typical in BDSM reads.

What I have liked is that this series promotes safe, sane and consensual. Kinky doesn’t have to take away the FMC’s power, it’s about her handing it over willingly. A lot of her books are about the FMC having suffered through trauma and that is the case here, but it also takes the time to examine the reasons why as well as seeing the FMC find her power….Whilst getting banged like a screen door in a hurricane and I am always here for that.

Do I think there are occasional scenes that tip over from cute to cringe? Yes but I don’t mind because there’s more that I enjoy than not. And I do appreciate a storyline here that delves briefly into a previous couple’s HEA and not taking it away but acknowledging that their HEA isn’t about popping out babies and I really liked the idea, even if it was shoehorned a bit into this story.

So in conclusion, give me all the sweet and kinky tales you’d like Ms Sinclair, I’m happy to read them.

It is getting redundant but here goes… MUST READ,

This time Cherise Sinclair was inspired to portray an author as an heroine with family issues. Same with the hero except he is a veterinarian. Then, Mix this with D/s and a bunch of lifestyle friends and pets at every corner and you have a glimpse of the romance.

Cherise Sinclair takes her time to write her romance and it shows how much efforts and heart she put into her stories. This one has two people falling in love, two jerks in the middle, annoying brothers, and hot sex scenes. You will not be disappointed about BDSM scenes. I do not recall reading some. #mew

What I enjoy the most is the balance between romance, plot, sex scenes, family/kids and friendship. Perfect ingredients, perfect recipe. Memorable addictive meal for the soul.

Long length romance makes them jumping the extra miles. It doesn’t feel rushed. The chapters make sense. I wanted her to move to his big house or a D/s proposal maybe 🤔 but the epilogue ended as it should with all the previous heroines and heroes of this saga. Cherise Sinclair’ books are like potato chips, cannot read only one.

It is always interesting what is in Cherise Sinclair mind. In this story she explored two different relationships with a father. Father-daughter and father-son. The author pinpointed exactly and with sensibility how difficult it can be to stand up against our own family… until the elastic break.

Along the years, I read many great romances. But Cherise Sinclair has become my #1 favorite author.

The only upsetting thing I can say is I’ll have to wait few months before reading her next story. That’s a real bummer! 😝

Story was boring. No real plot. Just one character with relationship phobia and second character with evil ex partner and family issues. The most exciting thing was search and rescue and the dog.

I think author needs to come up with new ideas. This series is just one story with some little changes again and again. Men are all knowing dominants never going over submissive s limits. Women who are immediately on board with everything men do to them. Female Dominant is dominant and sadist only because she is angry with men. Also BDSM is something like magic pill to help to deal with any kind of trauma you might have dealt with. And another thing that irritates me is that Masters and Dommes of the club and their submissives are something like cult or sect (for lack of better words). Everyone outside is bad. Evil ex boyfriends, no friends you can hang out with, horrible family members. Also insta close friendship with everyone.

Anything by this author is a one-click buy for me, and Saxon's story didn't let the side down.
I've been a fan of the Shadowlands for years now, and reading a new book in the series is like going home.
A little bit of drama from the past, some from the present, and all the dominance and submission that makes this series so special.

One of my favorite series. Love that we still getting more stories.

Veterinarian, S&R K9 team and Dominate Saxon Halvorson is a good man but very leery of any serious relationship.

Regency Historical author Murphy Chaykovsky who took over the raising of her bothers when she was just 13, survived a traumatizing incident with human trafficker and being emotional manipulated by her father is strong but yet doesn't have the emotional strength to stand up those taking advantage of her.

When Saxon and Murphy met at Shadowlands, Murphy thinks Saxon is a bully and wants nothing to do with him but when they are paired on a S&R mission a spark starts that changes everything for both of them.

It was great watching as these two grew stronger together and Murphy becoming friends with the Shadowland Kittens filling another void in her life. Also getting some 1-1 time with Gabi and Marcus. Great addition to the series.

Mehh, I didn't particularly like these two together, but clearly dropping by to say hello to friends in the Shadowland club is always nice.

Mehhh, questi due non mi piacevano particolarmente assieme, ma chiaramente passare a salutare gli amici del club Shadowland fa sempre piacere.

I was so disappointed by this book. Cherise Sinclair used to be an autobuy for me. I loved the Shadowlands, Dark Haven and the Mountain Men series with their emphasis on characterizations, building of trust and the growth of the characters over the story arc. I have read so many of those books so many times, and I fell in love with so many of the characters. I was not too pleased when the story lines started to include the trafficking ring in the Shadowlands. I read to escape, and I really do not want be confronted with the world's underbelly when reading romance. It is really a testament to the quality of the story telling that I continued reading the series.

This book now feels like a disjointed sequence of clichéed happenings with none of the rich build-up of the earlier books. It is so very predictable which conflicts will be pulled out of the drawer, and such a clear-cut line is drawn between the good people who can do no wrong, the bad people who have absolutely no redeeming qualities, and finally the redeemable ones who meander from one group to the other making a 180 degree turn. Unfortunately, this makes for very flat characterizations and very boring protagonists.

Not even the smut manages to compensate, and I flipped through quite a bit.

I am in mourning 😭 - I don't think I will buy another book by this author. An era has ended.

Out of all the Shadowland series I think this is my favorite.

The story of Saxon and Murphy is very well thought out after the last Shadowlands books The Effing List I thought the series took a very odd turn from what I have come to expect of Shadowland stories.

Murphy had previously snuck into the Shadowlands using an acquaintance’s membership(missing submissive during the slave trade storyline solved). She had a very extreme incident with the spotter for the slave trade and disappeared with good reason.

Fast forward 3 years and she is writing a book that takes place in a BDSM club during the Regency era. Her first experience with Master Saxon ends with her thinking him a Bully for hurting her new friend Gabi.

Enter Master Z with his usual matchmaking who pairs Saxon and Murphy up for her to experience certain aspects of the club for her novel and they both struggle to not get attached.

Between Murphy’s last experience at the club, her ex and her Father and brothers she has issues telling people no and standing up for herself without feeling guilty.

Saxon has his own issues with relationships thanks to his famous Producer/Director father.

Reading this story shows just how dis functional family can be and how hard it is to set down ground rules for your own sanity.

Truly loved this story my Ms. Sinclair is it too much to hope for Edward’s story next?

It'll be an awesome book!

As much as I adore Cherise's work I was not sure how I would feel about this book. I knew the story line would be compelling (and it is). I knew the characters would be well written and real (and they definitely are). I knew the world I was stepping into as a reader would surround me and fulfill me in ways only an avid reader understands (and yes, it definitely does this). I didn't expect, and by now I should have, to learn new things about myself while connecting with the characters. I love the sub plots that help drive the main points. It was a lovely journey as the characters learned about themselves and grew together and as individuals. As always with Cherise the last page arrived I wanted more. Not due to any lacking in the writing, I want more time with these characters that feel like my friends. I want more of everything (yes, I'm a greedy reader, I know). For now I will go back to the first book and start the journey again. I can't wait for the next adventure.

Beautifully crafted

No plot spoilers
No real potential triggers although there is reference to historical rape.
The fate of the woman Aaron the people trafficker attacked in the capture garden has remained a concern for me through subsequent books, I have to say it's a pleasure to have met Murphy.
I totally adored her.
Saxon is absolutely perfectly drawn, what hot blooded woman wouldn't want to be his?
There is a finely crafted plotline, with not a sentence wasted.
The characterisation is flawless
There is a sweet romance teased out and executed with ease.
There are no errors that I can recall.
There is some swearing.
There are some sex scenes of a BDSM nature
I have no problem recommending the book but would advise reading from the beginning of the series to obtain the best reading experience.

This book was just ok. Some parts were good, some not. I’m a little tired of the h always having such low self esteem.
And I have to agree with a couple of other reviewers, why does this author not like pretty women? Why are they always the bad guys?

This one wrapped up at 55%. The rest of the novel was extended denouement and catching up with other characters in the series. Interestingly, there was no teaser introduction of the next installment’s couple—the ending felt like a series ending.

Which is probably for the best. I enjoyed The Shadowlands, but it’s all blending together. The men are all paternalistic and prone to violence. The women tolerate all this and accept behavior plans for their self-improvements while not requiring the same of their partners. At least Sinclair acknowledged same-sex and femdom relationships more as the series progressed.

This is one of my Favorite books of the shadowland series. It brought back all my favorite characters interacting together again. ties up some story lines that I had some questions about. The theme of authors and fans brings in how readers feel about our favorite authors and how we hope authors feel about us. I am a very happy camper. . .now I have to wait again . . .for your next book. One of your best since Jessica almost hit the armadillo. Shadow kittens unite!😘

What can I say except Cherise has done it again. I loved every last minute of it, the pet play scenes were full of fun and I loved catching up with all the regulars alongside the main story. Just upset that now need to wait for the next one, in the meantime I may very well read this one again, just to make sure ai didn't miss anything of course 😁

Great book, enjoy reading books by Cherise Sinclair. Murphy's growth in learning to stand up for herself and discover a family of friends who encouraged and supported her was an amazing experience. I recommend this book by Cherise Sinclair.

The gang is back, and there was even a reason to have Gabi mouthing off agin, which always adds some great humor. We get a bookish author who moonlights rescuing people (like ya do) and family drama. I love how Gabi’s storyline went, I was worried for a moment. Another great installment.

And we are back in shadowland, which was nice enough, especially, revisit the other couples, but this book was a little disappointing, frankly it was boring. I felt, that the story, was told before, and the main characters was blah. I usually love CS books, but this book, did not live up her standard, not even close. I will say, I will still buy and read upcoming book from CS, and hope, this was a fluke.

I’m embarrassed to say as soon as this was delivered, I voraciously made my way through it with few breaks. It’s not the sex scenes, though she writes a good steamy episode. I like the relationships. I like how she sprinkles old friends throughout. I sure hope this wasn’t the last one in this series although there are more to look forward to in her other series.
