Artist, biker, “adventure eater,” and now author, Ken Hull has spent years riding, exploring and tasting his way across central Pennsylvania to find some of the coolest locally owned places for food, beer, and coffee. In December 2007, his journeys were first chronicled and published by The Indie Press in a book called going LOCAL! An Adventurer’s Guide to Unique Eats, Cool Pubs & Cozy Cafés of Central Pennsylvania.
His latest book, going LOCAL! Volume 2: A Second Helping was recently published in October of 2010 and is a continuation of his journeys and adventures. This is not an updated version, but 64 new restaurants, pubs, and cafes in central PA with the addition of seven area wineries along the Susquehanna Wine Trail and a few State College area goods and services.
I gave this book 5 stars because it's about trying to keep the local store owners in business. It's a little different from the first book. At first I thought I'd be disappointed because it wasn't the same as the 1st book, but actually I think I like it better. I really liked the locations, store hours, and things like that added in. I also loved the map. Great idea!
There are some I might not visit because of the distance but I enjoy the stories about them anyway. Who knows, maybe sometime I will go past one of them and remember about them being in the book.
I loved the story about the red hat ladies. I can't be a red hat yet, but I have friends who are red hatters. Heck, it could have been my friends who came into your house, who knows? I did laugh out loud about it because I could see my friends doing just that. And, oh! the stories they would tell about a guy sitting there with no shirt on. So funny!
I live in Centre county and still haven't stopped in some of the places you've mentioned. I will try and make it there now though. Sometimes we just don't go to the places in our own communities. We tend to frequent the same spots when eating out.
The story on page 260 I had read somewhere else before about the mayonnaise jar and the beer. I just don't remember where. It could have been in another book I've read.
Anyway, a good read and reviews of the local restaurants, even if they are further away.
And I thought the original was awesome! Well, V2 is Awesomer! I really out did myself :^D Like V1, this is a must have/read for the hungry adventurer! Fun, food, beer, coffee, travel, peace, love, God and good times - what more could you want? That's pretty much all I want. :^)
A very entertaining tour through many locally owned eateries. Some of his reviews were from restaurants/pubs/eateries I have been to, but he gave me quite a few new ones that I can't wait to try! I wish I could find a copy of his first book.
I had heard about this book and was excited to see it on the library shelves. It only covers central pa. Restaurants are listed along with his experience, a little history and some of the food choices.
I loved how he referred to his Harley as his steed. Maybe he will write a romance novel?
