Takashi and his fellow students join up with a band of survivors who have barricaded themselves inside a local mall. Though the shopping center seems a well-stocked place to hide from the undead lurking outside, the policewoman in charge is having a hard time maintaining peace within. The group from Fujimi High would rather not get involved in a power struggle and tries to stay under the radar until they are ready to set off again. But with so many attractive, buxom girls among the students, it may be nearly impossible to avoid unwanted attention of the worst kind...
Daisuke Satō is a Japanese board game designer, novelist, and manga writer. He is known for the publication of the alternate history novels Seito (Divided Japan like Korea), Red Sun Black Cross (Japan fights against Germany) and so on, and the manga series Imperial Guards (Army with saber-toothed tigers) and Highschool of the Dead (Zombie apocalypse), which he produces with illustrator Shōji Satō.
I like where this is going. Btw, nothing to do with the manga but I reading the colour version. What a change in Kouta.
They find a new girl, a police woman officer called Nakaoka as they stay inside a Mall. There they first get into hostilities with some residents. One of them try to rape the nurse and the policewoman (Nakaoka) tried to stop him. But she was very timid and couldn't do it. But Saya-san steps in and drops the guy senseless.
From this moment on, it's another love triangle. Just to clarify Rei Miyamoto & Saeko Busujima with Takashi Komuro.
And now the second which was in the end put to rest is Saya Takagi & Kouta Hirano with the policewoman Nakaoka. She didn't died in the 5th - he just turn her down.
In the end of this volume, the rest of the residents realize that they are alone and no help is coming...
Highschool of the Dead volume 5 contains chapters 18-22 and is a direct continuation of previous volumes. It's best to start at the beginning.
Takashi's group has made their way to a shopping center where a junior police officer and several civilians have holed up waiting for reinforcements. But new potential allies and a source of supplies brings just as many complications as advantages, and more tough choices await as reality intrudes on everyone's plans.
There's a fair bit of character development in this set of chapters. Individual motivations and fears come to the surface, personality conflicts grow a bit, and jealousy starts to show it's teeth. Intriguing questions about when good intentions aren't worth pursuing given the new state of the world come up and are handled in a (somewhat) realistic manner without letting the characters off easy. With the world gone to hell the survivors are capable of both great hope and great despair, leading to acts of both heroism and evil. This is a great thing for the story to dig into and this volume benefits from these themes.
As always there is also copious amounts of suspense and action, and everything is illustrated wonderfully.
Overall volume 5 takes the plot in a decent direction and sets up a number of interesting things to be addressed as this arc continues in the next volume.
The fifth book finds Our Intrepid Heroes holed up in a shopping mall after the failed American nuclear strike of the previous volume knocked out all the electronics in the Tokyo area. Go USA! But they aren't the first people to've found this mall. The other survivors there are marginally under the command of Asami, a rookie cop who was left in charge when her CO am-scrayed to get reinforcements. Now, days later, her authority is breaking down as the civies realized how screwed they are. Will the idiot civilians heed the advice of Hirano, Takagi and Takashi, or will they foolishly ruin their refuge and become zombie kibbles?
Yeah, like the ending isn't a foregone conclusion.
After the glorious Color Omnibus, this volume is quite a comedown. Black & white art on a standard paperback page just can't match the glossy goodness of the Omnibus, and at a mere 150 pages for the main plot (followed by a couple omake chapters) the story blows by. Hopefully when Daisuke Sato gets around to Volume 8 we'll get a second omnibus.
I knew story till Vol 4, as I had watched anime. Vol 5 gave unexplored story, even tho story is predictable. I can relate to the story, it was more about other characters than Takashi and Rei this time. Good read.
I liked how it describes the book and shows what they are doing.I was wondering where her sister went. She knew that her friends knew that she was somewhere in the school but they don't want to tell sara.Sara was getting really worried about her because she never came home from school and because she works the night shift. The other people didn't know what she was talking about but they were just saying that so she will never come here again.
Highschool of the Dead is where you get your zombie action. Fast and furious and intense. Nothing in this manga is for the faint of heart. I recommend this manga for those over the age of 16 for more of the sexual aspects registered within this series.
For those of you that are shonen fans, this manga is definitely for you. The amount of ammunition that these teenagers are packing is seriously something that you should all take a look at because its intense as hell! A wonderful and highly addictive series that brings you back to see who will make it out alive in the world succumbed to the wave of zombies.
Highschool of the Dead continues to impress in volume 5, though the influence of this volume is PRETTY OBVIOUS for anyone marginally familiar with other zombie media. Saeko continues to be the best character, though Hirano has a strong presence in this volume.
Now, reading volume 5 in 2019 MIGHT just trigger some folks. There is a scene where a female character is about to be sexually assaulted. While there is certainly no perfect way to reference this kind of event, I do think that despite the character involved, the volume would have benefited from some rapid character growth for her. Some might say that'd be strange, BUT THEY DID IT IN THE ANIME!
While it's really a book about "Fan Service" I love the plot. The characters are great and the art is top notch. If you can get over the triple E boobs in every shot, it really is a great story. This one I only put at 3 stars because I felt it was too wrapped up on one side plot too long.
Woo! Love Busujima. She is absolutely awesome and I can't wait to learn more of her past! The tension builds and I can't help but feel for the characters and care about each one of them!
