Encouraged to read this after a big up from Hisownself, Joe R. Lansdale. I'm glad that I did. First-person gumshoe narrative, written in 1971, as an affectionate homage to Chandler. Wise-cracking, tough guy who drinks constantly. Loved it.

I have not read any hard boiled detective stories before, and based on this offering I doubt I will return to the genre anytime soon. The plot was confusing and lacked sympathetic characters, and the narrator's slang was so dated as to be impenetrable. I'll stick with Agatha Christie next time I have a hankering for a juicy murder mystery.
