A Life of Faith: Millie Keith #3

Millie's Remarkable Journey

Rate this book
'Slavery is a great evil and we must stand against it,' insisted Millie. 'But we've never seen it ourselves. How are we supposed to know for sure if the awful stories we hear are true?' Effie asked. 'Millie will find out,' Celestia Ann said with certainty. 'I...will?' Millie questioned as she looked from one to the other. 'Of course you will,' Celestia Ann said. 'You can't spend four months on a cotton plantation without seeing for yourself! You will write to us, won't you?' 'What are you talking about?' asked Millie, her head spinning. 'I'm not going anywhere!' 'I thought you knew, Millie. Everybody else knows.' 'What do they know, and how do they know it?' Millie asked, gripping her Bible. When fifteen-year-old Millie Keith prepared a Bible study teaching on the evils of slavery, she didn't know that God was about to give her an opportunity to investigate the truth firsthand. To help cure her persistent cough, she leaves her family and frontier home in Indiana to visit the wealthy plantation in the South owned by her Uncle Horace Dinsmore. Will Millie have the courage to live out her faith amidst relatives she doesn't know?

Millie's Remarkable Journey
By: Martha Finley
Rating: 4 stars
Ages: 11 and up (best for girls)

Millie's life is about to be flipped upside down in Millie's Remarkable Journey. The adventures the future holds for her are incredible! The third book in the series, Millie's Remarkable Journey, is setting up the story for a huge change Millie is about to face in her life...

I loved the first chapter in this book! It was absolutely hilarious and charming. I just have to say...poor Nicholas Ransquate! :) He meets his match soon enough, though. Cyril and Don were so funny, standing guard over Millie...on request and payment from a certain gentleman in Pleasant Plains - who happens to be Wallace Ormsby! You just can't help but love him and the twins.

The whole book is a lot of fun. If you've read the Elsie novels, you'll know the Dinsmores, who are some of the main characters throughout this book and the next, which I love. It gives a more in-depth look at the lives of Isabel, Horace Sir., Mrs. Travilla, and even little Elsie Dinsmore!

This novel has some twists and turns you won't expect. I love the Millie series, and Millie's Remarkable Journey is a wonderful part of it! Remarkable, indeed. Some moments will catch you by surprise, and there are loads of laughter and heart-warming scenes throughout the entire series. More delightful characters are introduced in this book, including the dashing Charles Landreth, his friend, Otis Lochneer, and many others! They are some you won't soon forget.

I highly recommend not only this book, but the rest of the Millie Keith series to girls who love historical fiction and a story filled with faith and loveable characters.

"Millie's Remarkable Journey" is a satisfying, whirlwind touch-in with Pleasant Plains and a much more grown up Millie Keith--then it's off to another adventure. I love her meaningful conversations with her parents, funny interactions with siblings and friends and intelligent times with her Uncle Horace. Millie's journey is truly remarkable and I enjoy the historical touches as Millie travels across the young America. At Roselands, her courage is tested as she is thrust into a new culture--silk, diamonds and parties--but underneath it all she discovers the truth about slavery.

wow......I just love these books! they are filled with wonder, excitement, laughter, sorrow, and joy. Martha Finley did a fantastic job in writing the Elsie Dinsmore and Millie Keith books!
when I read this book, I was amazed at how I grew in my faith as Millie grew I hers. this was the first series in which I felt as if I was there, a part of the Keith family.
I highly recommend this book for 10+......and when you're done with them, you can put them in your hope chest for your future daughters to enjoy :)
this is 3 out of 8......so don't miss reading all the books!

I loved every single one of the Millie Books! I read them when I'm sick of reading or if I can't sleep or if I'm having a bad day. She grows up through the books so I'm always her age. :)

I really like this one!
WARNING- mentions of slavery, whippings, beatings, and slave owners talking about other humans like objects.
I remember liking this one when I was younger, but somehow I can feel for her a lot more now. These stories are pretty easy reading, but the plots are interesting and engaging and that keeps me reading.
When Millie has to go stay with southern relatives for health reasons, she gets a front seat view of slavery and the evils of it.
this is funny, interesting, and adventurous, perfect for tween and teen girls! I will be continuing the series.

The first half of the book was a lot of traveling, it was still a cute read from start to finish, but I noticed that I was a lot more interested in the book once she reached her destination. Also had some clever scenes in it!

The Millie Keith series was one of my favorite series to read. It's written by Finley, the same woman who wrote the Elsie Dinsmore. However, I found that I was more discouraged reading the Elsie series than I was with the Millie series. The reason being that Elsie is SO perfect in the books, always in the right, etc, etc. I'm not like that, so I was discouraged reading the books. However, when I read the Millie Keith series, I was encouraged by who Millie was. She was just like me! She had her problems with wanting to pinch her brothers right away when they wouldn't listen to her, or being content with what her parents told her to do. But, throughout the series, you get to see her grow in the Lord, and eventually those problems began to go away. She no longer feels the urge to pinch her little brothers, no longer struggles as much to be content with her new life. So, it was more encouraging, to me. The Dinsmore books are good, too. But perhaps I just felt better when I thought I could 'grow with the characters', per se. :)

This was a really cute third book in the series. I really enjoyed coming back to these characters, and seeing how they progressed. Though the two year jump at the beginning did throw me off a bit. I feel like I skipped some of Millie's most important years in the transition between being a child and an adult, which I was sad about. I understood though, because not much happened, I was just sad to have missed it.
Since this book left off at a cliffhanger, I'm hoping I can get the next book super soon.

Oh, I love Millie's hilarious mishaps that occur when she's at Roselands! But it's also such a hard adventure for her. I can't imagine being in a situation like that at age 15.
