Clara and her sister Bessi live in the South in the year 1901. One afternoon while playing on the front porch, Clara breaks her mother's crock. Thinking to earn the money to replace the broken dish, Clara and Bessie head up the mountain to find "sang", an important herb which is highly sought after. While on the mountain, they meet the "hoodoo man", whom their mother has warned them to stay away from, saying that he will bring back luck. The hoodoo man gives Bessie a stick to ward off snakes. The next morning, Bessie wakes with a fever, which makes her delirious. Clara and her mother must do what is necessary to help Bessie get better.

Red Owl Mountain, Tennessee. Clara knew she shouldn't have been playing with the crock pots that will be used to store food for the winter, but she just couldn't resist trying to jump over three of them when her sister Bessie dared her. One crock pot is broken and now Bessie is sick and both are her fault or is it? Could the old "hoodoo man" living in the woods have cursed them like her mom says? Or is he the one person who can save Bessie like Clara hopes? Clara decides the only way is to find him and ask...
