8/10:
Knowing that this was the middle arc in a short Spider-Man miniseries, I was a bit worried that I’d be confused or that this wouldn’t be a good standalone story. Thank goodness my fears were unfounded and this story genuinely rocked!

My introduction to both The Extremist and Doctor Tramma were exciting and felt fresh. I love how one is essentially a failure of Professor X and the other a peon for Mister Negative, but both come together over their hatred of Spider-Man.

I also have to mention that the moments between Mary Jane Watson and Black Cat are awesome, and I loved seeing just how uncomfortable it made Peter to see them becoming friends with one another.

BEST BOOK EVER!!! -- Well, pretty much. As a Marvel maniac since Reed and Sue's original wedding, I don't know how I ever missed reading this string of Spidey tales in this collection from Web of Spider-Man circa 2010-11. (I'm trying to catch up on a 30-odd-year gap!) But "Extremist" seriously is the BEST thing I have read in a long, LONG time. In five short issues I was entertained, taught, challenged, amused and left wishing for more. A new, different villian (The Extremist; what ever happened to this boy?), the interesting Doc Tramma, and the amazing teamup of Mary Jane Watson + Felicia "Black Cat" Hardy. The result: WOW!!! This was my Marvel! This was a hundred times better than a lot of the drivel and unending pointless violence put out by marvel (sic) nowadays (including Bore of the Realms (sic-er) and a gazillion unreal deaths and rebirths and baby hero/ettes in countless (yawn!) storylines). Thank you writer Fred Van Lente!!!!! This collected edition "The Extremist" was good and fun writing and reading from start to finish. I miss that kind of story-telling... Back to the morgues I go. You, read this book!!!

The Extremist collects the 'Web of Spider-Man' series that has been concurrently running with ASM. The first 6 issues comprised smaller stories and have mostly been re-printed in the ASM trades recently. The Extremist is a separate arch which fits in somewhere between the Lizard:Gauntlet and Grim Hunt trades.

The art is fun and it plays slightly lighter hearted, involving many of the supporting characters. In some ways it fills in the gaps of ASM (I've been recurrently left with this feeling that other events have been happening in the pages of some other book). It's not a bad story, somewhat inconsequential despite the large premise. Then we get a 2 issue story involving an MJ and Black Cat team-up. Yep. Bit weird, again filling in some gaps.

I actually quite liked it as a collection but when ASM has been coming out 3 times a month, I don't really see much room for a separate book.

Marvel seems to push these sort of books out at a rate of knots without actually thinking about it-- adequately (at best) drawn tales of cookie-cutter one-shot villains that cause minor conniptions to our hero of choice without every seriously making us believe that said hero in in any sort of real danger. A few quips, a smattering of self-aware asides, and Peter Parker believing that two exquisitely beautiful woman talking about him somehow equates to bad luck, and hey presto! Print, push, count the money.

Nothing about this is actually bad per se, it's just so mundane and cookie cutter that at best it represents half an hour's diversion whilst waiting for dinner to cook and nothing more.

Basically: so what?

Collects Web of Spider-Man issues #8-12

This wasn't the best "Spider-Man" collection I've ever read, but I'm still glad I read it. The title story, "The Extremist," was 3 of the 5 issues that make up this collection. It introduced a new villain that I found to be interesting, and I'd like to see more of him in the future. This story leads into a story featuring a Black Cat/Mary Jane team-up, as they face down Doc Tramma.

"The Extremist" had some good character moments, particularly when it comes to the relationship between J. Jonah Jameson and Spider-Man.

Ok story and good art. The stories should have been deeper. Feels like the stories just was thrown without much thought (espescially the last two) and that there is a things about the story that is missing. Only the art here is good and some of the writing.
