The author was a Harvard Law School graduate who crossed the Atlantic to enlist in the French Foreign Legion on 13 April 1917. Subsequently, he soon transferred to the French aviation service and after training at Avord, Pau and Le Plessis-Belleville, was posted to a fighter squadron at the Front.

In the 1960s, Ace Books released a series of paperbacks, which were reprints of World War I pilots’, most of them aces, memoirs. Biddle’s memoirs were originally published as The Way of the Eagle in 1919 and this is a 1968 reprint.
