My husband had visited Canyon de Chelly as a child with his family and been very impressed, so we took our own family there in 1998 on a wonderful cross-country trip. That is when I bought this book. At that time we took a Navajo guided truck tour into the canyon. 18 years later, in the spring of 2026, he and I visited again and found it just as spectacular. This time we drove both the rims (north in the morning, south in the afternoon) and the next day hiked down to the White House Ruins. And now I have finally read this book. It’s full of lots of information and beautiful pictures.
Found this at the local transfer station - FREE! A beautiful book about a place I've visited on Googlemaps, but not in person. When I was briefly a part of the SW archaeology crowd at CU they told me to visit Canyon de Chelly(pr. shay) but so far I haven't made it. Some day? The cover picture of my edition is basically the same but at a different time of day and from a slightly different perspective.
Interesting booklet on the history of the park, with many nice pictures of the landscape and wildlife of the canyon. Unfortunately, it was spoiled by talking about "millions of years" in the opening section.
