Bobbi Sheahan, mother of a child with autism, and psychologist Kathy DeOrnellas, Ph.D., did not write this book to lecture you on how to parent your child. Instead, they offer themselves as your scouts in the field, who have valuable information to share from the moment you realize your kid is different (My, what a quiet baby I have!), to the self-righteous moms on the pla ...more

This is a really reassuring and upbeat book about raising a child with autism. It also pulls no punches about the struggles.

I don't have autistic children, but I've known my share.

Bobbi Sheahan and her psychological co-author offer some techniques but mainly a lot of information and moral support.

I always love to read books by other parents of kids on the autism spectrum. (Did you follow that?) It helps me feel like someone out there understands. Of course, I have several real friends I can share stories with, but being a bookish person, there’s just something comforting about reading a book about it.

There’s a favorite quote in the autism community: “If you’ve seen one child with autism, you’ve seen one child with autism.” Books like this remind me how true this is. My son is very diffe

Bobbi Sheahan is one of the first people I met in the online autism spectrum community. I began following her on both Twitter and Facebook and have enjoyed a friendly online connection with her. Having read a couple of her guest posts and enjoying her no-nonsense style of writing, I suspected that her book would probably be quite good. Since I am a people pleaser and, since I have taken a liking to Bobbi, I said a quick prayer following my request for a review copy that I would like it. I was ex ...more

I purchased Bobbi'sand Dr. Deornellas' wonderful book over a year ago, and I read most of it quickly. I put it down & misplaced it for a while. That is the only reason it took so long to finish and write this review.

This book is a gold mine for parents just beginning their spectrum journey. I wish I had it when my daughter was first diagnosed or even earlier. I also suggest you buy a copy for your child's grandparents and your close friends, and everyone who truly loves you and your child.

More of a pep talk than concrete advice...but very down to earth.
