This is a pretty fun Gothic, with loads of menace and a lot of bitchy word play. The castle itself comes across a little muddy with its endless corridors and staircases and battlements and ramparts and empty rooms. I understand that confusion is the point butI wish I had a better sense of where things were. This is one of those stories where everybody is so awful to the main character that it’s hard to understand why she wants to stick around but her tragic backstory and her pluck make her interesting enough to hold up the tale.
