Lewis Cole's friend Jon Ericson is intrigued by local history, and has been obsessed for many years with his theory that the Vikings inhabited the New Hampshire coastline. He finally finds real evidence, but when Lewis goes to see it, he finds the police securing the scene of a murder. Following his moral compass and disobeying a request from his close friend, Detective Diane Woods, he teams up with his shady friend, Felix Tinios to bring justice to the murderer. DuBois does a nice job of shifti ...more

Lewis Cole is again caught up in keeping a promise that gets in to some serious hot water with his friend Felix. He meets an armature archeology buff who is determined to find proof that the Vikings had a settlement in New Hampshire and when he finally uncovers proof, he is murdered and Cole is determined to find the killer. The New Hampshire coast and more is again the setting although some town names have been changed. I have two more books in our library to read after a break to work on my ev ...more

A light summer read (in advance of summer!) that had a decent plot but very little in the way of character development or description. I pulled this out of the library stacks at random, and since it's #5 in the Lewis Cole series, I suppose I should have started with #1. Since the novel was set in Tyler Beach, New Hampshire, I expected the landscape and seascape to play more of a role – they didn't. The main reason for two stars vs. three is an egregious error in the book where a minor character, ...more

A new-to-me author and series....I love finding these and especially so when they turn out to be a gritty quick-turn-the-page-gotta-see-what's-gonna-happen-next type of read. BURIED DREAMS sort of feels like an amateur sleuth mystery in that Lewis Cole is a magazine writer and he wants to solve his friend's murder. But he has a past with the government and the grit factor ratchets up with Cole's friend Felix Tinios, a 'security consultant' (at least on his tax returns).

Together they work to inv

Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Minotaur, 2004 – Hardcover
Reporter Lewis Cole’s friend Jon Erickson has made finding evidence of a Viking settlement in New Hampshire his avocation. It seems he’s finally found proof and has invited Lewis over to see it. But when Lewis arrives at Jon’s house he finds the police there and Jon murdered.
*** DuBois is something of a buried treasure. Even if you’ve not read others in the series

Lewis Cole, a former specialist with the Department of Defense, has retired to a small New Hampshire town to live a quiet life as a writer. When his neighbor Jon Ericson is found shot to death, Cole tries to find the killer. Ericson, an amateur archaeologist, had long been searching for evidence that ancient Vikings had landed on their local beach, a good bit further south than generally thought. On the day he was killed, he announced that he had uncovered evidence supporting his theory. Was thi ...more

This is pretty typical of the other books in the series. This one was more focused on Lewis and less about the secondary characters. Lots twists and turns in the plot. I have to admit that I was surprised by the ending. Lewis certainly does some stupid stunts for someone that's supposed to be very intelligent.

This was surprisingly good. I saw the author on a game show and he mentioned that he was a writer. I looked him up! I will probably try another one by this author.
